I'll tell you my reasons:
1. Well I do love flowers. I also love COLOR. That is my main favorite thing ever. If there was such a job title as Colorologist, I'd want to be that.
2. I love doing store things; displays, so much fun for me. Well not a fan of moving heavy things around but I get someone to help my weak a**. Signage, web design, all stuff I like, yes some of us have weird ideas of fun.
3. Marketing/Advertising/Sales: Enjoy that too, the psychology of it is fascinating.
4. There is something new every day. The ADD part of me loves that (I don't really have ADD, I just think I'm a creative type who can't focus at times)
5. You really are a part of people's lives.

Why do you guys love it?

I love walking in and sticking my nose into anything scented. I love working with flowers. I love the rush of peak times. I especially love the artsy/playing/experimenting with all botanical materials. I love the seasonal changes and flowers that go with it, especially when tulip season starts! I love the fact that I am happy at work!

I don't consider myself a florist??What is that to you?? Later when I get over the weddings I am working on, I will post more on this..

I think the above quote is the chief reason I love this job. It's not the same old thing every day. And now that I'm freelancing, boy am I finding surprises!! :)
I love the way the flowers talk to me and tell me how they should be used in an arrangement. It's almost like looking into the cooler and they're saying "pick me pick me"! ;)

Because in each of us there is something that can not be denied - the very fact that God created this beauty in the most intricate detail that everything on the flower is perfect. This is a beauty where it is untouched & without guile. Flowers are just like children, each with their own personality, weaknesses and strength yet the must alluring thing about the both of them is their innocence and trust in the use of adult procedure.
That to me is why I love being a florist.

If not a florist, what would you call yourself? :)

I know I'm always editing posts, sorry.

Well a florist is someone who works w/flowers I would say. Nothing too complex. Maybe others have different ideas. But the question remains: assuming you do love it, why do you love being a _______________________(call it whatever you want, professional flower wrangler, chief bucket washer, head peon....flower diva, my hubby calls me flower maven)

I have said this before so forgive me if some have already heard this. as long as I can remember, flowers have been an integral part of my life. I have used them as therapy (as a signal mom back in the day), they have put food on the table and paid my morgage! I owe my life to the flowers and designs I have created over the years.I can not imagine life with out FLOWERS!! and when I die they have to carve some kinda message on my tomb stone, not sure what that will be yet but I will come up with something pertaining to flowers.:>

My mother was always very passionate about gardening...learned a lot growing up about flowers. I just cannot imagine not getting to touch a flower everyday and bring joy to other people.

I also love the fact that I am up and moving around constantly. Sedentary desk jobs are not for me...I need to be energized about my work and pass that energy along to my customers...it's a great feeling!!

Well as I sit here late at night, I will tell you my defination of what I am,

When I answer that phone there is a smile in my voice weather , I feel like it or not, Because that is they way it is supposed to be thanking each person for calling, before the details of the caller states what they would like, Then as they are sounding sad in there voice, because one has just lost a loved one, I am there to lend an ear for them to lean on in the time of need for them, and then a few tears drop on the paper that I am wrighting on, So the ink is a little messy, because it is OK, then after being on the phone for a few with them, then the next call comes in it is a Wonderful happy grandmother who has now the proud of her second grandchild, Oh she is so happy, but I think about the first call The Saying is that when one passes another child is born to replace them" So then I take her order and congrats are all around, Then the calls through the morning start taking the toll, of emotions that come with what I do, SO then, I start making the wonderful blossoms, that I am so blessed to be able to translate in to the meaning and emotion that each person has told there precious story to I whom they trust, with all there emotions to be translated to help the grieving upon receiving the sympathy arrangment, TO the new mother who have that wonderful all pink and white arrangment for her new child, from the grandmother who can't wait to see her new bundle of joy. Then to the corsage for the first dance of the child , who is now a man, remember when he was just 17 years old, and now he has driven an hour to get this from me, he is asking his childhood sweetheart to marry him, He is so happy about this, and asking do you think that my mother will approve? I am sure she will dear" YOu have been togeather for so long, and her family loves you, as well as I do my dear, So you know, I want you to be there on my wedding day, because you have been such a part of my life with Ashley, So please say you will ? Of Course you can rest assured that we will be there on your big day, " Well dear off you go, Please call and give us the details'''''' So then a few hours go bye So, The next morning I get a call that there will be no wedding, Because they both died on impact from a drunk driver, So now I am planning a repasse for the family, and funeral all at once, Then the wedding that is booked for this weekend is in the back of my mind, So doing that at the same time, on of my employee's looks so radient today, I think I know the answer why? She is with child, so happy for her, So if you are following this, and you feel that you are a florist, then that is Ok , But for us this is a journey of sharing all our values, and translating everything that we do into emotions, by being there for our customers who , I think as dear freinds, and who share there good and bad with us, and trust us to all parts of there lives, as it was put to myself a long time ago, The flowers are just a gift , and That is what I am a person who creates the gift of flowers, and making sure that it is all so bright, and that of being that of just a shoulder to cry on, laugh with, and to make sure its all good, So when I look even to this time with a sense of AWE at it all, no I am not a florist, I am a human being, who is truly blessed , When I became Queen of Weddings, it was a kind of sad day for me, because sometimes I miss the emotions of what it is meant to be, but then, I know that I have done my part, So when you stand back or look up or around you, If you think for one second that a you are a florist , Then this is not the business is not for you, Because each and everyone of you are more than that. It is that of you are the carrier of the blessings, emotions, and to be a person. That comes first, you are really a creator of your cleint who trusted you enough to call you. to give the gift of what they wish to give in there time of good and bad. Some say you are only as good as your last arrangment. But that is not true, Is really the one thing that you did that made the biggest difference. I also saw that ones were doing the Thought ful arrangment. which is nice, but sometimes, just hand a flower to a random person on the street, Now that is a gift. one of that smile that you have put on ones face, that you will carry that little smile or that glint from there eye to yours, For the rest of the day, now that is a great gift, Really I consider myself the Dream Maker. So you have to take it for what it is worth, in everything that I have put on here tonight, We all have bad days, and good days, but when the beauty of all comes with a touch of frangrance, that of such AWE, of a flower, Then you know you have had a great one.

Robin, we would get along so well! I LOVE color too--to the point that it drives my husband insane so I try not to talk about it too much (& he is color blind! I guess we relate on other levels :redface2:).

Queen of Weddings, thank you so much for your message. It brought a few tears to my eyes and reminded me of how we are so much more. I do love my job, and the role I play in so many lives. Thank you for that.

I enjoy it mostly for making other people happy.I like make someting out of nothing and giving someone a great feeling.I really don't think that I like the flowers so much it's just the creating I love. It just so happens that right now my medium is flowers.
I like working with the customers and seeing what I can create for them.

I like it because I am good at it. That's why I originally liked it, and still to this day. Boring, I know.

Oh I love the flowers, I love the people (for the most part), I love the crazy heciticness of it all. I like stories like Queen's, and enjoy that aspect of being part of people's lives a little too.

But mostly I like the satisfaction of doing something that I can do well.

books on color

side note to this thread - for those who love color, check out any book by Leatrice Eiseman. She has THE COLOR ANSWER BOOK, COLORS FOR YOUR EVERY MOOD, & MORE ALIVE WITH COLOR. She is a color expert for Pantone color systems and has been named one of the most influential women in the world.

Colors For Your Every Mood has a super wonderful section on what is your most favorite and least favorite color and what does that say. There is a history of each color, and a "personality type" associated with each color.

About once a year we have an employee/staff meeting where we choose a ribbon of our favorite color and then do the personality quiz. It tells you a lot about the personalities of who you are working with, very accurate in many ways.

And yes, you too can be a color expert according to Lee's website!
