Our wire out sales for the month of May 2006 were down 48% from May 2001 while the wire ins were up about 13% for the same time period. This seems to be the trend for our shop. Would like to know the experience of other shops. We are still charging a $5 service fee. I am thinking this may be part of the problem. Our in house sales have not declined with the exception of the wire outs. Anyway, your shops experience will be appreciated.

I think a lot of ex-wireouts are now using direct shippers or bypassing the wires and ordering direct through the web. The word is out that the wire services are overpriced and that calling direct will probably get you better value for your money.

The internet has changed everything about sending out-of-area orders, and it sounds like your decline will only worsen as more and more young mySpacer's order through web sites using local directories.

Just The Reverse Here!

Since the first of the year, our incoming phone orders are down by 1, but our incoming Mercury orders are down by 90. On the other hand our outgoing phone orders are up by 25, and our outgoing Mercury orders are up by 12. I think we are really seeing the effect of the internet, and the declining value of the Mercury due to poor coverage and IN YOUR FACE, WE DON'T WANT YOUR STINKING MERCURY ORDER ANYWAY PRICING!.

Our out and in numbers have increased this year. Outs have doubled over the past couple years, and incoming this year are 1.5x - 2x last year.

Comparing May '06 to May '02 (I bought shop in April '02)

May '02

Out In

FTD 25 110
TF 58 120
Total 83 230

May '06 16 26

May '06 was a weird month and our MD was not too hot.

For perspective, in May 2002 we were at the top of the list for both FTD and TF. And I was living with and paying for 5" card ads in both services. That was gone by July.

I dropped FTD in June 2005.

Recently our ratio of out to in is about 1.5 - 2 which is fine with me. I love writing checks :))

Cheers

Our orders....

used to be all wired in and wired out orders .... holidays and everyday orders. Then we started to see about 20% direct phone in with credit cards. Now, especially with holiday orders we are 80% credit card direct orders and the rest through Teleflora. We still send out a majority under the wire services with a few using shop credit cards. We still charge a fee for sending the order (minimal cost ... certainly not the OG $15.99 range). So charging a sending fee is not scaring people away.

Comparing May 06 to May 05

Wire out's down 4.4%

Wire in's up 35.8% ALL Real Florist orders!! I don;t fill for the ConMan!

Sorry I have no information to share about ins or outs since we encourge our customers to call you guys direct. We provide them with web address if avaiable and the shop name and phone number.

Now don't get me wrong we still do have some wireouts for those that just don't have the time. Our sales are up even though there is a major contruction project that has been going on since Novemeber and will continue for two years on our instersection. Its very encouraging to see our sales continue to rise without incoming from FTD Teleflora And 800flowers.

It really is (for at least our business) the best way to go.

May 06-05 Comparison

Local Customer Purchases Up 37%!! Wow That's Great!!
Wire Ins Up 11%
Wire Outs Up 2%

Mercury(ftd) Orders: Down 44%!!
Other Incoming Orders: Up 2%

Looks Pretty Good To Me!! :)

We're seeing slightly lower outgoings, substantially lower incomings and much more in the way of direct purchases through the web.

I attribute the lower incomings to pulling all WS directory ads, ASBs, expanded listings and 800 number BS charges plus refusing all orders from OGs aggressively marketing in our community.

Here are the numbers I think 'tell the tale' about the changing marketplace and our company's response to it.

Numbers are shown as a percentage of the total revenue for the comparison months of May '01 and '06.

Wire Outs
'01 - 15.9%
'06 - 9.8%

Wire Ins
'01 - 18.3%
'06 - 5.5%

Website Orders
'01 - 0.8%
'06 - 15.1%

Ken, I think filling more incoming orders is by shop choice and not necessarily by 'trend'. We could be filling far more incomings if we so choose, but find them to add work without profits and consume valuable capacity during prime time holidays.

There are definitely more orders being sold through third-party marketers today than in 2001 but there also more out-of-town consumers choosing to deal direct with local florists. That's the trend on which we focus.

My trend since the early Y2K for both in and out is declining. The trend has been for both to more or less equal each other on gross sales. Currently both are around 6 pct of total sales.

sometimes numbers can be skewed by the reason for the wire. Funerals, Baby bulges etc can change numbers from one year/month to the next. We have had well know members of our community who grew up elsewhere return home for a family funeral and it can account for a multitude of wire out orders for that service.
