Every year, the first week of January has historically been membership blitz week for the wire services. You may receive calls from them this week with all kinds of freebies. If you are enticed by any of these offers, make sure you know what you are getting into when it comes to "free." Optimally, get it in writing!

Just an example of what MIGHT happen: you might get an offer of everything free for 'x' months, which might include delayed billing on, say, the floral selection guide. If it comes to pass that you decide to quit the w/s after the free period, just be aware that you might be charged the $300, $400 (or whatever they cost now) -- it will not be returnable.

Or, they might give you free listings and ads ... you may forget to review their effectiveness after the free period and then will get charged for all of these ads for months until you can get them out of the directory. Get the cancellation deadline dates IN WRITING.

Just be careful and mindful of future charges ...

Also folks, when they say free, they really just mean the membership fee, not all the other stuff you pay every month.

Resist temptation,

I stayed with ftd last year when they had the "special small town" rate of $99.00. Obviously it was a one yr. contract. My question is how can they make me stay till May if there wasn't any type of contract following that one year agreement? I kept my fax copy with signature and there is nothing about after the year is up. Anyone?

Jenifer, usually they will say the special term is 3 months or 6 months, but sometimes a year.

Are you saying they won't let you out now? It sounds like the old ATT trick for yellow page advertisements. Yeah, it's for a year, but you have to tell them in writing not to automatically continue it on for perpetuity. This is absurd yes, but the old directory cycle thing will still apply because you re-joined them. In fact your rate will probably go up after the special term ends too. This is why you should never trust these people and just say no!

This would be because of how the directory listing fell...You must quit before the next directory cycle in order to not be responsible for membership...one tricky little timing issue that makes getting out diffiult...

I notified them by mercury and certified mail December 14th. I havn't heard a word from them, but when I called to ask about any other "proper proceedures" I was told I would be in till May and someone would be contacting me further. And yes the fees went crazy high. I have been rejecting the dog orders pretty vocally so be it.

Jenifer, when a florist signs a contract with a wire service, it isn't a 3 month, 6 month or 1 year contract that expires your membership when it's done -- it is a contract to be a member until you resign from them. The 3 month, 6 month, etc., thing is just a special "sign-up special" deal they give you for that number of months, and then after that, you start paying all of the regular fees, dues, etc.

As for the small town rate, that fee should not increase, it's not like your town has changed that much in population to not qualify for small town rate now. But they will start charging anything else you may have been getting for free with that deal. As I said in my post above, it is very important to get deadline dates by which you must notify them of your resignation, or to cancel ads, listings, etc., because they will insist you remain a member until you are out of their directory. Good luck, it can be a real hassle getting free of them.
