One change I did make was to eliminate all 800 number listings except my home city/zip ad. This cut the price of each other listing in half.
Not picking on Jerry, but here's the question.

Why should it cost more, and why would a florist pay more to have an 800 number listed in the directories?

It does not take any more ink to put in an 800 number than a regular number...and most florists never open the directory anyway to even see the number. Unless you get the majority of your orders by phone, and really want the incomings an 800 number for use by other florists is silly...to me anyway.

Not to mention that you are paying for those incoming 1800 calls. They may not be much per call but every penny counts. When we first opened our shop we had our 1800 number in our listing, this was before I saw the light, and when I would review my bill every month I found that the TF reps that were calling me all the time to get me to spend more money would use my 1800 number. That really ticked me off. Needless to say, it was only in for one listing cycle and the we pulled it.
