1938 Gangster-themed wedding

I don't have a picture of it, but when my Mom married her first husband.....She did not carry a brides bouquet. She wore her bouquet. It was an elaborate shoulder mounted corsage that draped down the arm, back, and front of the dress. The only flower she remembers being in it was a football mum at the center where the cascading portions met. This was late 40's early to mid-50's though.

A few years ago I was privileged to get to see my husband's grandmother's wedding flower receipt AND pictures of her and her wedding party. I know it was the early 30s. She and her bridesmaids carried giant fan shaped bouquets of glads. I mean giant with huge ribbons and streamers hanging down. She had about 6 attendants plus her and the groomsman.

Her bouquet was $3.50 and the total cost of the wedding flowers was $50.00. :)

From the looks of the pictures and the attire, it was a fairly large affair for the times.

I wish I had that receipt. It was amazing to me.

:)

I also have two file drawers (database) of old customer's purchases from the 1950's. I love looking through them and checking out the prices.

Sometimes the old ways of doing things are better. I hope I am not the only one here at FC who has lost good data because of pc issues or the vendor or network administrators erasing/deleting some good customer history.

one of these pictures keep me smiling/smirking/giggling.
I know which one, but I was too SHY to say it. Maybe V will say it for me.

re: those long cascade bouquets....

You know one thought comes to mind. How did those florists glue and insert all those flowers into oasis? ;)

What goes around comes around. Wouldn't it be nice to see a renaissance of this style bouquet? How would you like to make and sell those long cascade bouquets?

If you would, you better start practicing on wiring and taping! ;)

Joe

I HAVE made those big long style of bouquets before. When I worked in Charleston, SC we had a bride who wanted big lush floor length cascade bouquets. We did wire and tape those bouquets.......and even with the lightest gauge wires and glue.....those bouquets were heavy. I had wired thumb loops so help the girls hold the bouquets.

BTW - I would LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE for the cascade to come back fully into vogue.....I have had my fill of those round martha style wads.

I made centerpieces using white ostrich feathers. It was a tall pilsner with hugh feathers out on top, in all directions. I had to use a bridal holder to fit in the vase and hold all the feathers. I also used lights in the vase. It really worked with that theme!

Wow im drooling!!!,a chance to shine and have some fun...corrr,i can almost feel your excitement from this side of the pond...
If its to be kept authentic though, does that mean no alcohol ?, was it still prohibition?l

If it was prohibition, there were rumrunners, speakeasys, bathtub gin, and in this part of the country, there was white lightnin'--moonshine stills down in the hollar and a sentinel up on the ridge with a shotgun picking off government agents! Should be a great party. All kidding aside, what a fabulous opportunity. Was that also contemporary with The Great Gatsby, or was he earlier? It will be gorgeous and fun too.

Reading HollyB's post put another idea in mind......There IS a legal moonshine distillery in Virginia that offers their product for sale.......The product is called Virginia Lightning.

You could have all kinds of fun....or they could too.....with that.

Their website is www.virginiamoonshine.com

Prohibition was repealed in 1933; however, most counties in our area chose to stay "dry" for several/many years after that. The bride and groom are choosing to keep the prohibition feel to the reception. There will be alcohol but in limited supply and it will be "hidden" (think bribes and runners). I think this party is going to be an absolute blast!

I have been printing some of the pictures posted here and am meeting with the bride and groom next week to narrow down their selections. I hope, I hope, I hope I get to do one of the huge wired and taped bouquets. Bride mentioned that her favorite flower is calla so it will be interesting to see what style we end up with.

Again, thank all of you for your posts. This is going to be fun!

Calla's would fit in that era as the Art Nouveau was just coming into favor as well as Art Deco.

BTW,

I had the book out on my desk today and when my dad came over today I asked him how old the book was. He said probably early 30's. He said that book was around when he was in grade school and high school.
