I was so sorry to hear about the little 23 month old toddler who was the 1st swine flu victim in the US .It happened in Texas which has a lot of ill people as confirmed cases.
Our Dept of Health is investigating 7 cases here .
Is this going to get serious for everyone and can we take any pecautions ourselves ?
How worried should we be for our families or is all OK ?
I dont know what to think with all the drama on TV .

there is so much concern, that the "authorities", whom ever THEY are, are considering "re-naming" the swine flu into something more "generic", because people ARE truly starting to panic, and Mexico, much like Toronto's SARS outbreak, a few years back, is going to suffer immense repercussions.
I'm NOT an overly vengeful person, but, to be honest, with the way that MOST Mexican service providers treated their paying guests, after Conquest Tours collapsed, it looks "good" on them.
What hurts the most, is seeing little kids losing their lives for this potential pandemic, so yes, take the extra precautions necessary, wash your hands, sneeze into hankies, or your sleeve, and for heaven's sake, stay AWAY from MEXICO, for the foreseeable future!!

It does not "look good" on anyone. That's a terrible and mean thing to say. People have died.

Teresa... all governing bodies are trying to quell the panic with solid and easy ideas on preventative measures. Absolutely washing hands and keeping your environment clean is important. Masks are not a bad idea if you're heading into an area full of people. It may look weird, but it is a precaution.

This is where "It's a small world" becomes a negative... because we are all so transient, no place is a safe haven.

It is really infuriating how they shown a bride who was "devestated as she could not end her wonderful wedding with a wonderful honeymoon", i wanted to jump into the tv and vomit on her for being so vulgar. People are dying and the tv over here are showing how sickened people are by having to cancel their holiday. Some people are so shallow.

I chatted with my kids today about the need to constantly wash their hands, did they take any notice??? Probably not!!!

I just hope and pray that not many more lives are taken, its so sad.

Over here too

One of the flowers wholesalers in Scotland, Pete Marshall of Henry Doys, has just come back from honeymoon in Cancun with it and he and his wife are now incarcerated in their house.

Wash you hands and use hand sanitizer

Before and after touching money, credit cards, or checks from customers, wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer. You will be protecting yourself and your customer. It is recommended that you wash your hands for 20 seconds, and clean your cuticles and under your nails. Most viral illnesses are contagious before they are symptomatic, therefore anyone may have the disease and not know it for a while.

The travel companies have shut the doors on Mexico travel at this point. Cruise companies are re-routing their ships as well.

Just in from World Health Org on CNN:
Based on assessment, alert level raised to phase 5. (1 to 6) "Strong signal global pandemic is imminent" All countries are advised to activate pandemic alert. "All humanity under threat during pandemic" Developing countries will rely on donated antivirals. Current strain is sensitive to antivirals, but it is evolving. Government is is allocating current supplies to states. "Tamiflu" Infections will be expected to be from mild to severe from regular flu like symptoms to pneumonia and death.

All countries are advise to activate surveillance and control.

I saw on the news tonight about the raising of the alert level to 5.It makes you wonder how much or little it's going to take to get up to Level 6 and what that means to us .
I suppose we can only hope that the thing does'nt evolve or it'll be like the movies and God knows they were all scary stuff .
There were comparisions in the newspapers here about the effectiveness of the different masks against the virus and the 3 M respirarator one is the best ,available from medical suppliers .

I think they know more about the ordinary flu and how & why & who it kills but the problem with this Swine flu is that it crossed the animal human threshold and could evole in humans to be virulent and deadly.
The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 killed 20 to 100 million (estimated ) accross the world young healthy people not just young children ,the eldery or sick and was devastating.I imagine thats the worry now and with air travel the virus can move all over the world in a very short time .

Heres hoping they get it wrong and that does'nt happen .Thanks for the pm Paula ,will keep in touch on the website thing if thats OK with you .You're great .

Plus, there's no vaccine and there won't be one until September at the earliest, they say. It's all kinda scary...and it's not the media's doing this time.

Dorothy,
I believe there ARE anti viral drugs available that have an effect on this strain. However there are currently not enough in stock, question is being raised, do we break patent with the drug company currently producing? i say share the rights or we allow the patent to be broken, NOW.

I intend to keep myself informed on it anyway and take the precautions ,washing hands with antivirals ,watching out for flu like symptoms etc.Funny thing is my hubby was due to go to Mexico last week but the trip was changed so that was lucky .

I totally agree with you Thom on that .Whatever needs to be done to contain this must be done .No messing around.

Ok I'm worried now since Hubby took a flight from Midway to San Diego.....ugh. :(
