1st Swine Flu victim in US .

They said pigs would fly before a black man became president and sure enough - 100 days into his presidency - swine flu.

I think they know more about the ordinary flu and how & why & who it kills but the problem with this Swine flu is that it crossed the animal human threshold and could evolve in humans to be virulent and deadly.
The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 killed 20 to 100 million (estimated ) across the world young healthy people not just young children ,the elderly or sick and was devastating.I imagine that's the worry now and with air travel the virus can move all over the world in a very short time .

we'll never truly know how many people died directly AND indirectly in that time period, where global travel and information was in it's infancy.
In this day and age, we're likely to suffer higher casualty rates, if high volume travel between countries isn't stifled.
By the way, our family "missed" this Mexican outbreak, by 3 weeks, and the drug "war" evidence was fairly widespread already, so, who's to "know" if this wasn't a deliberate attack on the wonderful people of Mexico, by some barbaric "brew lab"......
