I just posted this on another forum, and thought you might like seeing what I do when I am not yacking here or working.

the pics show the original barn, the rough wood on my trailer, (the wood overwinted in my garage as my minivan set outside). Rogh wood before dimesioning, rough would planed, jointed and dimesiioned. (I spent every bit of 70 plus hours pulling out old rusty nails from this wood) You will see the nail holes in the finished product.

a picture of the leg and rails loosely joined together.

more pics in the next post.

Love it when you can create something so beautiful with your own hands. thanks for sharing with us.

Nice Joe, very nice.

Did you ever get your anti-weenie cutting table saw?

Beautiful... just beautiful.

The pictures give the provenance. You have created something that will someday pass muster on Antiques Roadshow.

Joe,
I love the table, but how can you leave it outside? Did you coat it with Poly?

It is too cool.

All the best,

No Poly,

I used a Marine Grade Spar Varnish, $110 per gallon! The top has 6 coats and the legs and frame has 4 coats. (We have a several sail boat harbors in Carlyle and a marine store at the lake that sells Marine grade products)

I also had no plans for this, just two magazine pictures. My friend's wife wanted a long table. After cutting out a lot of bad spots I wound up with a table just shy of 10 ft long. The goal was to attain the "look and feel" of the pictures.

Yes, but I did not use it for this table.

However, I saved alot of the cutoff's and started making birdhouses. The bird houses will be used - decorated and sold in the flower shops.

The saw actually works. My very first cut I caused the blade to fire. The sawblade just barely caught the tip of my miter gauge. (I forgot to reset the miter gauge back a bit. I had it set for my old saw) well that only cost me $180. Ouch!

I'll order 6 please... :) Beautiful work and attention to detail

Um Joe....the chairs don't match!

Great work...I know the feeling you got when you caressed the top, prior to applying the first coat of finish...one of the best feelings there is!

Joe, you are one amazing and talented guy! Beautiful work!

Is that corn that I see in your garden in the picture of your son?

Very nice Joe!

Very nice! -I really like the legs (I know that sounds weird, but I like how they are joined underneath - very mission-y).

My hubby did a similar project with 150+ year old barn wood. It's amazing how something so ratty on the exterior can be planed down to beautiful luscious and warm wood again.

tracy

ps - tell your little cutie she's much too young for table dancing :tongue

Very lovely. Do you, like my Dad, salivate at every falling down barn you see while driving in the country? My Dad also makes birdhouses, benches, cabinets, etc. that we sell in the flower shop. People love knowing they are made out of local "old" wood.
