Do you still use it? And if so, for what purpose?

Just REALLY curious.

AND....

What kind of ribbon do you use the most?

Acetate Satin Ribbon is a Workhorse in our industry. I use it to make super large bows for cars for instance. I use it to make bow backings for balloon door hangers for new baby designs. I wrap wreath rings and then overlay tulle and other material to make a really feminine design.

You might think of it as 'Old-Fashioned' - but it really is a workhorse and you can use it in ways that more expensive elaborate ribbons cannot be used.

I don't use it at all. My workhorse that I use when I wrap flowers is relatively inexpensive sheer ribbon. I have a bunch of French Blue sheer that is my signature wrapped-flowers ribbon, along w/green mesh and cellophane.

I don't use a whole lot of ribbon in my design; occasionally a wrap around a vase with a simple bow with some wired ribbon, nothing fancy. Sometimes I like to use 2 colors that go w/the flowers, looks cool.

Even though I don't use a ton of ribbon I really like it and would buy a crapload of really expensive stuff if I could justify it. One of our wholesalers here has a wide selection of premium ribbon, I just go in there and droooool.

Very rarely use it. Odd you ask. Was staring at my ribbon rack the other day wondering what I'll do with alot of it. Have lots of #9 and #40 satin just sitting there.

I'm finding I don't use ribbon much anymore, other than wrapping flowers. For that I use #9 chiffon. Oodles of colors.

What I use the most is double faced satin (nice satin) for wedding work.

small town, older population..........we have to carry good old satin acetate. "Red Carnations with a Red Bow, Please"............

Now I will say that anything that goes to anyone under the age of 60 or so....I use sheers and some funky print sheers.....if I use any ribbon at all.

use it all the time, but I don't know if we'll continue once we wind down on the copious inventories we've bought from defunct shops. We mix it with sheer & raffia & print for a fun textural bow. Customers like the bows.

I also use it to wrap my BHO handles, twisted up all around it, so it looks ruched (sp?) looking.

I also sell a fair amount of large mailbox bows, so we've got the plain jane plastic ribbons too.

Guess I'm a bow kind of girl.

Use it everyday for plants, homecoming mums (a southern thing), wedding bouq stems, churches ask us for large full bows, use it to decorate windows a lot, bears necks at VDay,lots of other things.

I too have bought out many shops and have enjoyed using that inventory, now dwindling. I really hate to see a beautiful plant or fresh arrangement with a sad little shoelace sheer bow on it.

No matter what you use make it pop, don't make it look like the end of a roll or an after thought.

There is an acetate lime/chartruse green color that I would kill to find, it was part of a buy out and I keep a little piece of it taped to cell phone case, just in case I might run across a source.

It's RIBBON not Shoes with me....

Thanks for all the responses...
I would appreciate even more.

As you know, I have a crew of flower shop snobs. BUT I love 'em anyway.

I personally hate ribbon. I just don't like it. But THAT'S just my own taste...So don't boo me!

Anyway,
We have a lot left from the old OLD OLD crew... Trying to find a way to use it. I do use #9 and #16 (we don't have any 16 right now and never will again) and #40 for funeral work, but only for funeral work.

We do put some bows on some plants, usually bloomers. But not acetate, usually a wired printed sheer ribbon...BUT once it's gone I doubt if we will buy anymore of that either.
Once in a while I'll put a bow on a green plant, if I think it needs it. I'd rather put willow or kiwi or dried pods or mushrooms or something else, if anything at all.

My intentions for this thread was to find some way to use this stuff up that I could get the girls excited about.

But I think it will just get used up on funeral stuff.
phooey!

Funerals and recitals....mostly....

The previous owner had a ribbon fetish and I have not had to buy too much in 3 1/2 years...maybe a few rolls of #40 and #9...

Wedding ribbon never....prom ribbon never...have way more than enough...

I'm with you Shannon, I am not a ribbon and bow fan...I do like the look of lots of ribbon, but I find it is too costly and takes too much out of most arrangements to bother with it..

Ribbon all the way for me, not so much on the acetate though. I only use that for funeral work and as added volume on a gift/fruit basket, worked in with a couple of other nicer ribbons. We also use a #3 ribbon to write names for the kids on their prom garters, I don't care for the look but the kids seem to like it. I do a garden look arrangement that doesn't look finished without a nice ribbon draping from the top. I also do a small silk piece that sells really well in a lidded box and has to have ribbon looped through it. People here want bows and I still like them, not on every piece though, doesn't go well with Ikebana style, heh. I had a nice run on silk wreaths at Christmas since I could do a nice full one for $100 using lots of inexpensive ribbon. I was surprised that they turned out as well as they did, since we normally do mostly floral on those wreaths. Lots of big look for not much money, that and I used inexpensive large glittered leaves as accents to continue the look.

Would love to see a picture of those wreaths...I am always looking for something different and now would be a good time to make some up...if you don't mind me stealing your idea.

there is a pic in the john henry tributes 2 book of this type of wreath

Yeah I am not a fan either , but hey folks want it, after seing your post, one of the girls took some navy blue, and hot glued inthe center some silk star gazer blooms, and a few odd's and ends, and put it on the front door of the store, Well lets put this way, my darn hands are killing me, I have been making bows like crazy now for two days, They are selling like crazy...all different colors, and such, and now have brides who want them on there pews and chairs,. way cool, now I can get rid of all of it...

Get yourself worked up and march down your shop's driveway in a huff because you have been blocked in or out of your own lot multiple times each Thursday for the past three weeks during the farmer's market. At the end of the driveway whip out the number #40 hideously bright orange plastic ribbon that you know you had the good taste not to buy, and proceed to wrap it around the parking meter, stretch it 30 feet across to the telephone pole and double back to the meter. After you realize that you forgot scissors, chibble it off the roll with your teeth and the keys in your hand. Double knot it, for extra flair. On your way back up to the shop, notice that the vendors are helping themself to your electrical outlet (just inside the garage) and that one lady was kind enough to hook a strip to to it so she could plug in her personal fan.

On your way back down the driveway to put your hand written NO PARKING note on the window of the car who parked there anyway, take the scissors with you. After realizing doubling the ribbon was overkill ( and inconvenient to you and your shop) you will need to just tie it once around. This way it won't look like a rabid dog chewed it.
Restrain your urge to attach the no parking note to the the big rock you just stubbed your toe on and go back to your shop. Remind yourself yet again that you must find a way to capitalize on the farmer's market , 'cause its going to be there for the next 12-14 w....e....e...k.....s.

In the meantime, I'm stocking up on orange #40, need to get rid of some? ;)

Back when I was repping for Designer Dispatch ribbon, many of my customers became very interested in the Tuxedo satin I carried, which was exclusive to DD back then. It was very inexpensive, pennies more than acetate, but a noticeable upgrade and much classier looking than plain acetate and it held up nice in the cooler. I believe Lion and some wholesalers started carrying it and probably still do now.

Ivy, I hope you read them the riot act on using YOUR electricity! That would put me in a knot big time!

There's an easier way to get rid of the parking lot sitters. POST a few signs.....TOWED AT OWNERS EXPENSE. ( They'll get the message )
