Amazing Headdresses

The last headdress design I did was for a design competition. The competiton theme was "Midnight Reflections of the Twenties"

It took me eight weeks of planning and assembling the raw frame. It took me another three weeks glueing and covering the frame with silk floewr petals, It took me about eight hours steady work in glueing and attaching the fresh flowers complement. And all this was done before and after the regular day's work, on my lunch times, etc.

I'll have to really hunt through some photo albums and see if I still have a photo, but the model's helmet had one of those large straw hats you see on doors as the base.....sprayed black. The brim was rolled and twisted and buckram frames with black silk rose petals added to hide styrofoam. The mechanics covering the foam and adding accents was teal painted tulle with black and silver glitter. The fresh flowers complement was purple dendro orchids and peacock feathers strung on long ting ting peices. My model wore a black and teal all fringe flapper style dress.
---------------------------------------------------

there is more to this story.....I'll finish telling it a bit later.

To finish the story. My model was also a designer and a great friend. However, unbeknownst to me.....after I had contacted her and she said yes to modeling for me. She decides to enter the competion and got the shop owner's daughter to model for her. (She and I worked in different shops), Imagine my surprise when I discovered that my model was competing against me !!!!!

Between us confusing the contest organizer, me getting my model fitted while she is getting her model fitted.......The dj getting confused about whose music is whose.......needless to say, ALL of us got a few stiff drinks when it was all said and done.

AND to top it all off, MY MODEL placed first and I placed second. In the end, we all; had a great time, more than a few laughs, and some increduble floristry walked down that runway.

You know, Scott & Rich have a whole page of their headdresses.

Love this one Scott's wearing. :)

I have it on videotape - but do you remember Cathy, the year that Darrel Poper AIFD did a headdress program at an AIFD National - Palm desert I think it was - AMong the mannequins was the Cinderella design done by Scott and Rich.

Talk about an awe-inspiring program. I still watch it from time to time just for sheer inspiration.

Cathy,
Do you know how to participate in this event?

I know that Modesto and Michael Garcia from Fiesta have contributed in the past. This is sooooo Arthur Williams from Babylon, here in Denver. He needs to volunteer for this. He would love it and thrive in the environment.

Goodness, I could learn a lot from you! The HAUTE COUTURE of floristry!
Fascinating ...- and very impressed by the art - who actually buys these items?
Are they only for certain shows?

Although headdresses in the style we are seeing in this thread would not be sellable, You can adapt the techniques to accent your everyday work. For example: Prom-time, girl wants flowers in her hair, take a long wire with scotch tape on one side and cover with carnation petals......bend into interesting shape.

As far as being for certain shows.......no doubt these are show-stoppers......next time you are doing a show.....even if it for a local florist group or even a group of interested ladies.....like a garden club meeting.....make even a smaller version and show it off.
