Just got my update cd for Nov-Jan......(just a little late don't you think) and noticed that FTD had added a Norton anti-virus cd that says must be installed or you will be charged $15.00 per month in extra support fees for not having protection.
I called FTD as I refuse to use Norton beause it creates all kinds of problems with running certain software and was told to install it and so that it would send a message to FTD that my system is protected, after which they told me to disable it and use my own anti-virus protection.......So when I went to install a message came up on the screen that I would be charged $2.00 a month for virus updates that I will never use!!!!!!

I have Norton already in my MercDirect computer but it apparently won't recognize it when loading the new update cd. My laptop has McAfee and I'm very happy with it's performance and will not switch. Have you ever tried to disable Norton's? You have to go way into the configsys to get rid of every single little hidden file. It is almost impossible to rid in a system it was installed in. Been there, done it.
WITH Norton's Tech Support on an old Gateway we had Norton's in. Even they were apologetic trying to get it all out.
As usual, FTD is sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong. Anyone running FTD's program on their OWN personal computer system has a say as to what protection they will use, not forced down our throat by the overlord.
Typical.

Maybe the solution is to shut down the merc system , I refuse to use norton , it blows , F@#$ed up my computer at home and took a tech to come in and remove it . What would happen to FTD's system if all merc users turned it off instead of installing this norton crap????

Hmm... negative option billing again? That's not legal, here.

Ryan

yeah , forgot that , c'mon every Canadian FTd member , class action ??

Norton was a pain - even on my Mac! (that's why I totally removed it and will NEVER use it again...edited...)

I would NOT settle for any crap like that... Funny, when I was talking to Larry R. about "things" a month or so ago, he said that Norton would be included at no charge (I questioned him about the security of the FTDMerc systems...).

I *knew* they would have to charge for the virus definition updates...

If FTD had ANY common sense, and wanted to make sure all FTD Merc Wintel/Merc Direct systems were protected, it should instate some policy that you (the florists) would have to agree to have some CURRENT level of virus protection on your systems, and that if you could not provide one, one would be provided for you (for a nominal fee, of course...)

- h.

I've informed FTD that we are very happy with our AVG Antivirus (outperforms Norton, updated daily, and is FREE). We won't be using Norton, because that would be downgrading our security level.

I believe Larry was speaking the truth. I have Mercury 6.0 and I was told it came with a lifetime Virus protection. My new Norton cd that came today states the software is free and all updates are free and automatic.
I am running Norton on my server and my other pcs have AVG on them. The cd says I should install it on all my clients also. I think I will uninstall AVG and go with The Norton so FTD can support it.

Well atleast you don't have to install the Bob version of Norton.

Hmmm... I'd take that over the current version of goons running the place...

At least he told ya he was gonna screw ya first and that you would like it.

Regarding the other Norton thing... NO WAY! Norton SUX (anybody check the Norton home site for flowers?)...I use EzTrust here, among other things...

Seems to me that they want this installed for some other reason, not sure, but why now after all these years?? Their Linux users do not need it, so can they single out WindoZ users legally?

Sounds to me like they are trying to use Norton to plug security issues they know they have in their platforms rather than fix the issues...maybe...maybe not...but still sounds DUMB to use Norton...

I spoke with a couple of FTD Mercury Direct people today.

FTD's Norton Antivirus version will not install on any operating system older than Windows 2000. So for Widows me, 98 users, you need to upgrade your operating system to avoid the $15.00 fee.

Also, one of the FTD techs told me that the $2.00 monthly update fee is incorrect. He told me that the updates will be totally free.

Joe

PS. He also told me that out of the 40-50 calls he took today with Norton install issues, only one got it installed successfully.

Class Action?? Can I join???!! :)

Isn't the REAL FLORIST answer obvious??? They nickel and dime their "members" force them to buy, on a regular basis, outdated selection guides, force "members " (there's that word again) to pay to ensure quality and contribute to the degradation of quality themselves by selling lowball orders and expecting their "members" to give in and fill them knowing that many of those orders are not being filled properly...
(now you've done it, you got me going again!!!!)
...........sign up Stupermarkets like Loblows, handle the ordering process for them while promising that if you by from Loblows instead of their other PAID UP MEMBERS, you will save up to 25% off and free delivery (turns up every now and them). If you fill an order you have to pay them for the priviledge of reporting it so you get paid; if you don't send enough orders they try to charge you a low sending fee (no, I didn't pay one in 16 years- just refused) - of course if they can gather all the orders then they can charge all 20000 members 20.00 or whatever - that should add to their bottom line and just imagine all the willing victims...

Hey, we have a federal election coming up soon so maybe they can run; they'd fit right in! Can you imagine the new coalition after the election; FTD and the Bloc Heads, the NDP (that's the lefties to you Americans), Harpers Bazarre (the right wing fanatics) and the sit on the fence Liberals (yes, in Canada the Liberals aren't really "liberal" in the American sense of the word they're just swimming back and forth in the middle - @@@@ I'd wish they'd tire out, must be those fence posts keeping them alive)..............................

Can someone PLEASE untie the mooring lines so we can go back, maybe even just halfway across the Atlantic???

Who said Norton had tech support? There is no such animal, just a bunch of robotic help files that tell you they "think" they answer to your question may be.

I've been at the point of four letter words in reply and I still get the same "we think..."

This represents the worst of internet companies. Ones you can't reach unless you're buying.

Would be a real dumb moove in my opinion.......first off it says free on the cd but when you install it tells you thae $2.00 monthly fee will be added to your statement........as far as uninstalling AVG....DON'T DO IT unless you are prepaired for all kinds of problems that Norton will add to your life!!!

Hello... FORCED UPGRADES??? EXCUSE ME???

Is that $15.00 a month fee per PC?????? (read the fine print folks)

And judging by the 1 in 50 installs that went as planned....whats up with that?? FTD's own version of Norton, is most likely worse than Nortons initial version before FTD got ahold of it....

There's more to this than meets the eye....something smells fishy, and it's coming from the direction of Downers Grove....

LOL, Hey I'm not disagreeing with any of your suspicions. Forced Northon AV and forced OS upgrades are outrageous.

However, $15.00 per Mercury Direct terminal. So one fee.

Back to the OS issues, I have been running Windows 98 with little problems since 1999. If I have to go along with this, that means that I will have to upgrade 5 terminals to Windows XP Pro at a cost of around $1K. I don't want some computers running 98 and some running XP.

I told the techs that my main store terminated FTD memberhip because of these kinds of stunts earlier this year, and that the branch shop might be forced to follow very soon!

Sent a quick email to my FSB told him I was unplugging my machine from their clearinghouse if forced to use this program. I refuse to be told what to use for "protection". Can't wait for the reply especially after telling him what Tech Support informed me on getting rid of my Merc Wings program on the HP I purchased from them (crash the system and put new OS on it)
Can't install MercDirect on it because it has Wings hanging around.

Just write.....

"Return to Sender" on the CD jacket, and pop it back in the mail!!
I'm just thinking that I'll refuse to "update"......
And by the way......I've been running Norton, Kaspersky, and eTrust EZ AntiVirus on several machines, and I don't have the "issues" that some of you claim to have with Norton!!
Could be dumb luck!!

One more reason to leave FTD. Merc Direct will be discontinued today. I don't know why I even agreed to a free 3-month trial.

Mike: If you don't update by 15-Dec-05, your account will be charged $15.00.
That is what FTD tech support told me yesterday.

And like you, I too have no issues with Norton. I use Norton Small Businnes Corporate Edition
