BIG wedding arrangement/ help please

We have a wedding coming up in august. Recently the bride came in to add a "little something". For the reception she wants an arrangement 5' high and 4' wide. Not on a pedestal but the actual arrangement that large from the base of the container to the top. It will be sitting on a table or stand. She wants some kind of urn type container in black. We are thinking of painting a terra cotta container and designing it on site. We don't get a lot of orders for pieces of this size. I know you guys will come thru for us . THANKS

Right now all the garden centers have the nice big patio containers. I am sure if you go to one of those places you will find something perfect for this size arrangement.

We just did 2 large alter pieces for a wedding this past weekend and we greened them in and put the flowers in them at the church. It saved a TON of hassel transporting and worry about flowers breaking etc..

Have you thought of suggesting to the bride 2 nice size arrangements she can use at the wedding and then setting them side by side to create the larger looking arrangement at the reception ? Just a thought.
 
Nice all around traditional arrangement. calla,star gazers, roses, perhaps some anthirium primarily red and white. She also likes the tropical greens, monstera etc. I guess really what we are worrying about is finding a way to get the height and enough oasis to not have it come apart. Have you ever used chicken wire over the oasis? Just wonderingif that would work?
 
We suggested a couple of smaller arrangements but she really wants the one big one. We have a large tropical silk in our show room that she loved but she wants it bigger and not necessecarily tropicals just big and showy.

We will probably go to one of the garden centers for the container.

Cool designs. We are going to check out Lowes and the other garden centers in the area. We don't really want to paint it but she is set on a black container so if we can't find one in black that is appropriate we won't have much choice.

Parie has some nice big designs too, but she'll have to email them to you.

That would be helpful I will ask her.

The rest of the wedding is fairly small but she has pretty much given us carte blanche on this arrangement. I will have to price everything out but I am thinking $500- $700 or so depending on container, what we have to use to get the height etc.

Possibly a pot in a pot with draping of the flowers to cover the second pot...

Or frame oasis covered in chicken wire to the height and shape you want. It would be nice if it was in two parts and you could transport it to the reception to do double duty...of course there is a charge for that....
Regarding the container...I would look at those "lightweight" ones and I would paint it...they can be re-painted over and over and used for another event if you need. Good luck and take pictures as you go along...that is great for future project and for us to see as well!

Lowe's & Home Depot Both Have Nice Urns That Look Classy But Yet Are Light Weight. I Put A Insert Container In It, The Mache Rounds 10in- Oasis It, Make It Leaving Room For Additional Tall Items, Transport Seperately, And Touch Up There On Site Adding The Few Taller Items, Yes We Do It As Rental. It's Amazing How Much Taller It Becomes With The Addition Of The Container And Classy Too!
 
The one below was constructed in a 5 gallon bucket filled with Standard Oasis; chicken wire added to the top. (Make sure to let the foam extend at least 3" above the lip of the bucket/liner.) We looped cable ties through small holes that were punched near the top of the bucket to make lifting and lowering it easier. The design was made in place so we simply spread out a painter's tarp to catch the debris and make clean-up a breeze.

The urn is resin and was picked up at a local wholesale house but I've also purchased quite a few like it at HD over the years. Just make sure the 'foot' area is strong enough to support all the flowers and foam.

If you're looking for strong reds, gingers and heliconias are a great look and good summertime value.

Great ideas. Thanks Sher. WE will take pictures as we go and share them when we are done. The Wedding isn't until august so we will probably do a practice or two to get the hang of it. We might ask the local bank if we could do one for their lobby and put a small "courtesy of" sign on it. We do that with smaller arrangements and it actually does bring in quite a few customers.

Will checking out Loews and Home Depot this weekend. The mache idea might work well and save transporting the whole beast at one time if we can't make it on sight.

That is exactly the kind of stye she has in mind. Do you use the cable ties to hold the chicken wire in place with the holes punched in the bucket? I was wondering how to make the chicken wire stay put.

think about things first......

will you be able to successfully transport this large an arrangement??
Sher's idea works if you have limitations...
Do a centre arrangement in a high container, then maybe 2 or 3 "peripheral" arrangements, that once butted up against the tall container, "form" one large arrangement.
Otherwise, 99% of the time, you'd have to build this onsite.
CHR's idea of "transport" handles is brilliant....something we learned long time ago
 
I built ours at the venue... far easier than transporting it.
