Book Club

Good point - sadly, no small, independent bookstores exist within a 50 mile radius of our town. Which is a shame!!

The closest one for me is an hour drive each way. Its a viscious circle. You want to buy local, but nothing is nearby, so you buy online, therefore making the online big guys bigger and contributing to the habit of the entire to world buying online instead of local.

This reminds me of the movie "You've Got Mail" and how "big, bad Fox Books" is all about low prices and high sales volume and "The Shop Around the Corner" is all about customer service and small, personal details, all the way down to bagging the books. The small shop knows the customers by name and all about their lives. I wish there were more, cozy "Shops Around the Corner".

Unfortunately, our small town has too few "Mom and Pop" shops left so we are let with the big Wally World. Although we always try to stop ourselves before running there and think where else in town we could shop and give our dollar to someone we actually know!

I know the feeling. I am so anti wally world its insane. They really messed us up a few years back. I can't give the details, but since then I will do everything in my power to not set foot in there. But Target gets me frequently. And I know they are no better. All big boxes taking over the little folk...

Do you know of anyway to get the audio book downloads from a localish place? I hate always buying from the big guys too, but don't know how else to get the audio downloads...

In our area, there are no longer any small local book stores anyway. All there is is Borders and Barnes and Noble. And since Amazon owns Borders... Its really sad. I love the old style cozy bookstores I find when I go to other towns.
It may be impossible to buy local, especially if you need audio books. For those of us lucky enough to still have independent booksellers, I have found that they are more than willing to order audio books for you. Also, try the library before you buy something from amazon. Our libraries have networks so they can get books from other libraries if they do not have what you want. Just my two cents as a board member of our local independent business alliance.

Well, my endeavor into the world of audio books has not gone so well. Apparently the audible.com format does not work exactly right with the Droid (my phone/mp3 player.) After a whole bunch of downloading this that and the other... I think I may have it functioning. But my has this been a frustrating few days.

Love the Droid, hate the lack of compatability with so many things. The iphone just owns everything. UGHH.

Needless to say, I have yet to start reading OR listening. Soon. Soon. Soon. I hope.

I love this idea! I have an hour and a half commute each way (on a good day) and audible books would be great to fill the time (I can only take so much inane talk radio) I just saw the posts this morning and see that this thread has been going for days. I've noticed this happening a few times before. I usually just click unread posts, and assume all the new stuff would be there, apparently not. Should I be clicking each catagory to see all the new posts, or what would be best for me not to miss anything?

That's odd, since the iPhone is the one that operates on a proprietary format, while Android is an open platform supporting all the standard audio formats used by the majority of the world. I have the Milestone (Canadian edition of the Droid), and haven't had any problems with audio compatibility.

Did you select the correct format from Audible.com? I am not a customer, but I do know they offer different formats and software for Windows / Mac / Mobile users.

If you click on the What's New button you won't miss any forum posts. Sometimes there can be multiple pages, though, so make sure you read them all :)

I tried to download the Mobile format, however the mobile connector software thing doesn't recognize the Droid. Lots of other phones and MP3 players, but not the Droid. I tried to sync it using Windows Media Player (which is how I have downloaded other audio books from other places.) That didn't work. Finally I turned to the Droid forums- and discovered I was not the only one with this problem. Well, on Friday Audible released the beta version of an app for the Droid, however... they don't offer it in the Android marketplace yet - so I had to download some other software to be able to download the app, to be able to download the book! But I finally was able to get it AND the book into the phone. Excitedly took it into my car this morning to play it thru the new FM transmitter I picked up at Best Buy... and the FM transmitter needs AAA batteries. Which I didn't have at home. :) I swear it has been Monday for three days.

Me and my bright ideas!! :)

Oh, and regarding the iPhone. I have had this problem with so many things with the droid. So many companies just make files compatible for the iPhone, accessories for the iPhone, etc. I have had this problem downloading books and music from other websites too. And then the lack of accessories...I'm going out of my mind just trying to find an armband so I can wear my Droid while I workout. The iPhone ones don't fit right. What, do they think, that if you are geeky enough to buy a droid you aren't going to work out??

Sorry. Monday moaning over now. :)

Peggy, what an awful commute! Depending on the phone/mp3 player you have, you may also enjoy listening to different podcasts on business related subjects (or other subjects that interest you!) I have a short commute, but spend 2-3 evenings in bed due to treatments on a neck injury. Podcasts have saved me from completely losing my mind while endlessly staring at the ceiling.

Thanks Sarah, I do use an ipod classic for podcasts and some music, but I've never used audible books! I don't know why, but this is a wonderful reason to try it out. Quite a few of my podcasts have been on app reviews for iphones, there may be some out there with reviews for Droid apps for you.
Sorry to hear of your neck injury, I can't imagine! I've been battling a minor pinched nerve in my neck and it's driving me crazy, you don't realize how much you move your neck in the course of the day. Take care.

True confessions - I never got thru June's. I have been swamped beyond belief plus sick. I had the best of intentions... How about something small and quick for July, like "Who Moved My Cheese?"
