we save the plastic lids from the deli containers (4") and glue a chunk of oasis on it. Yes, we wash them first and remove a label if any.

I use the oasis igloo's. I never thought about using lids, liners etc. I guess that really would be cheaper. Love the idea of the champagne glass.

that is exactly what i was going to say!

Except I have used paint can lids.

Pint containers, either used and washed or new from the wholesalers or a 5" plastic plant saucer

Love the idea of the champagne glass - we use 2 or 4 ounce portion cups. One of my friends owns a restuarent. Super cheap, lightweight and just deep enough.

I sometimes use the clear plates that you serve cake on.(cut down if needed) All so can glue osais on a plate, soak, place on top of vase and have a tall piece for table with out the price of a taller vase.I transport cake toppers in those plates too, keeps the flowers from damage till placed on cake, and stores well in cooler till taken or picked up.I must add the plates are 6"(small)
50 plates for 6.00 or 7.00 bucks.

just a question on the champagne glass. ARe you inserting the bottom of the glass INTO the cake?

thanks

Yes. I always ask the Bride and show her what I am planning. No one has had any objections yet and I've been doing it for about 3 years. You can leave the bottom on to assemble and use it afterward if needed. They are very small so it doesn't make that big of a place and no one eats the top anyway.

We don't use anything, we either just design into the cake or we do a nosegay and jab it in the top. My brother LOVES wedding cake so the times he goes he cuts out a 1" diameter with a knife, removes it, eats it, then inserts the nosegay.

No one has ever said anything except a few of the people at the reception location that wonder why he is eating the cake. No one has ever complained a year later when they eat that GROSS frozen cake.

Try it, you'll find it much easier. The other containers are hard to hide.

The State of Maine is currently preparing a statement to be sent to caterers, florists, greenhouses, wedding planners that state it is not advised to place flowers directly into the cake. All flowers used on a cake or edible piece is to be placed by other means than stems.

that is why we use the plastic food lid. They sit flat and are invisible, yet with a small lip to keep any moisture off the cake.

by the way - we took our cake top on our honeymoon and ATE it. :)
too darn good to freeze.....
