Do you go in other shops on vacation?

You betcha! Do it all the time. Not necessarily just on vacation but anytime I have an opportunity.

A couple of weeks ago, I took my mother to Myrtle Beach. I went to 2 florists while I was there. I told both of them about flowerchat. We exchanged business cards and ideas. I love doing that!

I always let them know I am a florist. You never know when they might need to wire flowers to my area.

You bet we do.

I stopped in and visited flowerchatter03's darling store when we were in West Virginia in August. :) Keep meaning to blog about the florists we saw on the trip, including the shop that does the flowers at The Greenbrier. There are some very nice things going on with florists in WV.

Next time you are this side of the world, come to Washington, Pa. Just 40 minutes from Morgantown and I'll buy you lunch! Go WV!

Always have to visit flower & gift shops

I always pop in and do let them know that I own a shop in Durango. It's been very positive, usually learn a thing or two. And it's great because usually the shop owners (if they have time) want to talk and have been super friendly. I was in Lexington, KY recently visiting family and visited 4 different shops there, met the owners and got a better idea of which shops are appropriate for sending gifts & arrangements to my family there.
If any of you are out in Durango - please do stop in to say HI!

Back when I was president of Missouri State Florists Assoc., I tried to visit as many members shops as possible. It was a great education, but, the bi-product was......they all started sending me their orders.

ALWAYS!!!! I love the chance to meet with other florists, exchange ideas and see what and how we each do things in different areas of the country.

This January, I was lucky enough to visit both Big Ted and Cathy shops in California. Not a favorite passtime of my family, but since the vacation is usually on my "Dime" I go anyway.

In a few short weeks, I will get the chance to see both Geebf and Flame's shops when I go down under. I can't wait!!!

I really enjoy visiting flower shops when on vacation. Most of the time now, I will not tell them that I am a florist, in the past, once they knew, I was not treated very kindly, all of a sudden there was no time to visit....strange!

hey twigs we are in Laughlin tonite- gonna be in vegas tomorrow.... where is your town???

Robin you have to come north! Twiggy is midway in the state on the west side and I'm at the top middle. We're both alot more fun than the glitz of the southern lights.

Back to the question, YES I go to all the gift shop and flower shops. Have to tell you one response I got once though. We walked in and the front was very small. No gifts just a cooler & some vases. Gal came out and said Can I help you and I responded I was just looking around. She picked up a hotel bell sat it back down and said Ring this if you want anything and disappeared to the back. Hmmmm I've never sent that shop an order, because of that visit. I guess first impressions count in my book.

Robin hope you're having a good time!

sometimes I get this too--geeze.. what is up with that?? and then some are the total opposite and they give me the tour all through the shop and in the back too!
In fact one shop I visited a couple years ago before I had my own- I had some time to kill before an appointment and I ended up helping her with her wedding!

Robin come up NORTH!! IT's not far.. what's a couple more hours or so???

well, I will say this, Once in a blue moon I will get to go in shops, depending on who I am with.

In March When we went to Denver we got to go to BJ's shop (very nice shop), Cherrie's shop (very nice shop), and also to Happy Canyon Floral, by recommendation of a ribbon vendor.

Happy Canyon is such a neat shop, Lots of stuff other than flowers. Really well displayed. I like that. Awesome work room from what I could see. It made me happy just being in there.

well the way things are going I am not gonna get to visit anyone. we're having a good time but logistics are a challenge with 6 other family members. just figuring out where to go for lunch is an ordeal, lol

I am going to visit Sher in Ft Lauderdale in a couple weeks, I have been meaning to the last couple years we have been on vacation but never made it over there. I will make sure I make it happen this year :)

Florida here we come! :bouncy:

you need to pull into her "drive thru", and honk incessantly, and "demand" to speak to the owner, THEN, offer to buy her a beer...works every time!!:chef

I Love to shop hop whenever I am out of town! My favorite thing to do!
Here is an article I wrote for a local paper regarding a shop I visited.
The Power of Flowers

“I don’t sell flowers. I sell the value they hold, the feelings
and emotions they represent; the smiles they bring.”
Flowers influence the emotions. Flowers can speak volumes.
That is why we purchase cut flowers - for the moment; to get or give that unique feeling that buzzes up inside your soul; this feeling that I can't really describe.
When I am visiting other cities, I seek out flower shops, my favorite pastime. I love to see how other florists spend their days. Recently, I was with a friend and we found ourselves in front of a small storefront that was a flower shop. Very different than Stems, really. One small room, not very inviting, but, something drew me inside. The artist at work was busy with her pieces and let me know without words that she didn't really have time for me.
I understood. She pretty much only wanted to know what I needed, and she wanted to know pretty quickly. There was no lingering to be had in this shop. There wasn’t a lot to look at or even room to move around.
So, I asked her to make me a bouquet and gave her an amount to work with. She didn't ask me what I liked in flowers or colors. This was her deal. Ok, I let her do her thing. Create. I was the customer and I would wait to see what this artist could do.
While she did not impress me with a warm welcome, or conversation, she created an absolutely wonderful bouquet! It was
as if she just knew what I should have. I loved it! I was watching her perform with the flowers and felt a strange excitement build. She put them in lots and lots of colorful tissue. I realized that this beautiful bundle of flower stems arranged in a bouquet was for me.
My soul was filling with a buzz. The feeling was indescribable.
This feeling is something you get when you give flowers and also the same feeling you get when you receive flowers. If you have
never experienced this, try delivering a bundle of flowers to someone unsuspecting. The recipient is so excited. Their emotions are unrehearsed and real, and the feeling actually transcends onto you.
In Eckhart Tolle’s new book A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s
Purpose, he describes a flower as fleeting, ethereal, “a messenger from another realm, like a bridge between the world of physical forms and the formless.”
Sometimes, a message from another realm is just what is needed
to make someone’s day.
