I wanted to post this as a poll, but couldn't figure out how.

Warning, do not read further if you are faint of heart about cats.

Came home and noticed a white trash bag out near the road by my mailbox...hmmm...I think to myself, thought the garbage men came, but that particular bag doesn't look familiar. Husband tells me to go look in the bag, but I say, no thanks, I don't want to look at garbage.

So he tells me he went to look at the bag and stuck his hand in and felt and saw a dead kitty. There was also a note in the bag, which he gave to me to read..."Sorry I hit your kitty." (with frowny face on bottom of note).

Well, we do not own any cats.

And now the poll part, we think it belongs to our next door neighbors to the north. What on earth would you do?

That's a terrible way to end the day:( I would call the neighbor you think the kitty belonged to and ask if they had one missing. Otherwise they'll be waiting for it to come home:( At least the driver tried to be considerate and didn't just leave it in the road. Hope the rest of your week goes better!!!

Yes, I would also call your neighbor to find out if their cat is missing. If it is, I would tell them what happened. I would not want to be the neighbor looking for my cat. I would want to know what happened to it.

That is truly sad.

although the person apparently had good intentions (I would have knocked on a few doors), I would contact my neighbor. I would hope someone would do the same had it been my cat.

Being the owner of 3 cats, I would want to know. I keep my cats insdide because of this. The few times one of my misbehavin' cats has gotten out, I have stayed up half the night trying to catch the bugger because I just couldn't sleep knowing he was outside. Imagine how I would be if he never came home and my neighbor knew all along that he had been hit by a car....Oh boy, not pretty...Be good and tell the neighbor even if it is one of the hardest things you have ever had to do. Also, they may want the body to have it cremated or buried properly, I know I would...

I also have 3 inside cats, and feel the same way, please try and let them know, not knowing where your pet is, man, the worst feeling in the world!

I am an animal person, and have an indoor cat (actually he has me). Call your neighbour and let them know. It's awful waiting for your beloved pet to come home...

I had a house on the highway for several years - my cat got hit and lived - but the neighbor's cats I think it was 3 times were killed. I buried the cat for them then took them to the grave.

I thought it a kind, compassionate thing to do and apparently they did too. (Woodsy setting right near the house)

I'd call the neighbor. Maybe you could put it in a box sized box for burial instead of just the garbage bag.

Our property is the pet cemetery. We have buried several cats (only one from accidental death) and a beloved dog, all of whom died of old age. Along with several pets belonging to my immediate family.

That's a great idea, even a shoe box would be better than having your beloved pet handed to you in a plastic garbage bag. I would definitely call them ASAP.

I'm with the others and yes, please, put the cat in a box of some sort. My mother periodically says that I dote on my cat worse than if she were my kid and I'm be destroyed to get her back in a bag.

Who has a "Shop Cat"?

We have 'shop catz" at both of our shops... one is named Bailey, because we found him at a place called "Bailey's Hardware". The other is named "Bud", as in flower bud. Do others have shop catz? I think they add character.

All the best

We do when I go overseas - Coonie lives here at the shop. Rest of the time we have my sister's poodle here.

And I'm pretty sure Erlene always has one too.

I wanted to adopt beautiful and chubby little Persian named Andi for my shop but one of my best customers is deathly afraid of cats. When I did a poll of my customers on how they would feel about a shop mascot she about flipped out and said that she couldn't even walk in the front door if she knew there was a cat in here. That vetoed the kitty even though I really wanted her :(

My Scottish Terrier, Cody used to be the shop mascot until he was big enough to jump and bark like a wild child at every person that walked in, or by, the flower shop door. Now he stays at home.

Well...maybe it's the training....

Even though I only visit our shops once a month, at best, these cats come running to meet me and want to play or be petted. Honestly, I might give up a good customer or two for that "fringe benefit".....

All the best

Mittens walked in to our shop 18 years ago from one of the upstairs apartments. She had just weaned a litter of kittens and was trying to escape a two room, cigarette smoke filled apartment with 6 kittens (and two brain dead owners). She came into our back room before closing time and I didn't know she was there. The next morning, there she was in the front window, walking and purring. A few days later, the apartment dwellers came in and said "you have our cat!". Okay, lost cat's home found, cat went home. Next morning, found her in our back room curled up in a low basket.
The dead heads decided to move and wanted to know about the cat, we told them to leave her, she was fine. Been there eversince. Got her shots, health checked, spayed, and 18 years later she is a very happy 19 year old. Funny story, while we were gone on vacation this summer, the insurance office next door had a distraught "tourist" come in stating there was a dead cat next door in the window. Young agent says "oh no, poor Mittens" and runs out to look, taps on the window, Mittens stretches and rolls. She laughs but the "tourist" isn't amused. Now she wants to call the cops cause "That Cat is being Abused!". Insurance guy laughs at her...."when I die, I want to come back as that cat!". Tourist insists on calling cops to which she is told "the cops would laugh harder than me cause she's scared at least 1/2 of the force guarding her back door at night when they're on their street patrol". Tourist finally gave up, cat went back to sleep in her window and at night entertained "her public" in my display windows. BTW, the cat has mail from 1990's from a young gentleman in Nova Scotia who sent her a valentine card addressed: Mittens the Cat, Flower Shop, Millinocket, Maine
hmmmmmm

Thanks for the advice all.

We had a duck disappear last year, and still do not know what happened to him.

We wanted to spare them the awful news, but I guess it would be best if they knew.

We do do cat adpotions out of the shop, we have found homes for 137 cats and kittens. I've only brought home three to live to old age.

I did have Lizzy (after lisanthus) at the shop with me most days. She was raised from the age of 2 weeks in the flower shop and then commuted daily for 2 or 3 years. She loves to ride.

She likes to go outside and hunt too much so we let her stay home now. Too much traffic where my store is to even consider letting her out there. She is clearly happy here at home in a fairly wooded area. Plus she can annoy the other 6 cats we have :)

We too had a shop cat who wouldn't stay in the shop, so he had to go live at the homestead. Should have named him Gollum because he is totally black with big green eyes and when it's dark outside and he is peering thru the windows. You get the picture.

Used to bring the dog, bandit, a blue healer into work, but he would love up the ladies and growl and bark at the guys. That didn't make for good business.

Awww, I have a blue heeler that my mom and dad stole...er, I mean adopted from me when I moved into my husband's house. He likes to run and where I live now there is just no room.

I told my mom I was stealing him back when we got our new house built but I almost bet I'd have to fight her for him. He's the sweetest thing and thinks he is a lap dog. The guy that I got him from named him Tim and every day when my dad gets home from work hey says, "Hello Tim! Tim...what a name for a dog."
