I have a bride that wants personal flowers only featuring the rust/orange mini calla and rusty orange roses. The bride brought in a
picture from Elegant Bride (features at least 18 mini callas and 15-20
roses in the above color scheme. My first question is can all or any of you do this for the listed price in the magazine of $250 ( it also includes
accents of winter wheat, geranium leaves and chamomile).
My local source tells me at this time the mini callas in this color could
be $5.50 per stem. Is this a normal price around the country or is it high? My second question is variety of mini calla--the picture shows
mini callas of deep rust burgundy to golden orange. Is this flame?
When I look up flame mini callas it looks like there is a wide fluctuation
of color and maybe not as deep a color as I would like. Need help from
you who are more knowing. Thanks

The price is about right per stem for the calla's. I would actually charge more for that bouquet if she has to have that exact number of flowers. You could do it for $250.00 if she didn't want as many callas and wanted to cut back a bit on the roses.
Flame callas do come in variations I have found. Sometimes just a touch of the right spray gets them the color you need them to be with very little effort.

Remember that your mini callas come in bunches of 10 -- so you would be ordering 2 bunches for this bouquet. make sure that you use up the extras in other work for this wedding. Same advice goes for the extra roses.

Price is ok.....we would actually be in the $275 to $300 range for the bouquet with the extras you described, with your count of roses & mini callas.

Pricng could certainly be that high, or even higher depending on the stem length of the callas. Most colored callas do have many variations in shade and depth of color, even when they are still on the plant.
You may want to check out the calla Treasure, very close to Flame but I have found the rust color is more intense.

ssp-
$5.50 sounds high to me. We are in the KC area--what wholesalers do you use in Poplar Bluff? Some of ours have "out runs" to more distant areas.

wow...price sounds very very expensive to me. Mini Calas here are 1,50- 2,-€
Price for the whole bouquet is okay. But ???????? chamomille ...oh no...absolutely no go . In my oppinion it doesn´t match to the other flower colours and style. I would take virburnum with red berrys or Asclepia.

Wow, I'm so surprised at the price differences across the country! I pay $18.50 (10 stems) for callas. Sometimes as high as $28.50 for extra long stems or unusual varieties. I use Z Calla out of Oregon, but don't have any shipping charges to consider.

In my area it would be more like $350.00
Don't be afraid to explain that prices vary by region...often quite dramatically.
I would check the Mango variety of calla...this week mine were crazy dark, very rusty, and 70cm were only 1.95. from Metz. And I order by 10 stem bunches.
Re: the chammomile...I often order the matricaria "cammile" that looks like chammomile, but I'd rather see some hypericum, but that's a personal choice.
Remember, you are the expert, not the bride, give her what you think will look the best, and charge what you need to charge to make a buck, or let someone else lose the money.

Mini calla price is higher than I ever pay for them. We could do the bouquet for $250.

I say use Mango calla.

I agree that winter wheat , geranium and chamomile sounds gross. But what do I know.. maybe it's pretty.

Our big joke around the shop is Mango Callas are to Autumn as buttercreme stock is to Spring.

Thanks Sandy,

That bouquet isn't bad at all.
The description cracks me up though....'calming chamomile'

I SO wish it would have said right after the 'calming chamomile' part 'and nutritious wheat'!! ha!

By my estimation, you've got 20 mini callas in there and 12 -15 roses. With some bupleurum and hypericum, at my shop's prices, you'd have about $300 of materials with no labor. I only mark up 2.25%, so it's the seasonal fall price of the @@@@ orange callas that knocks this one out of the park price-wise in the fall.

Looks like Mango to me, possibly Treasure, they are pretty similar. Also looks like some solid orange ones too, maybe Hot Shot?
Not unheard of for Mango and Treasure to top $5 a stem in the Fall. They start creeping up in price around mid-September and top out around mid-November, sometimes as high as $7 a stem, depending on demand.

Yes, it sounds ridiculous, but here's why it happens: Calla plants produce year-round, so growers don't just plant extra Mango or Treasure for a fall crop, like some flowers like Bronze Poms or Rover Mums. So they grow what they can reasonably expect to sell year round. When fall comes, demand far outstrips supply. That means high prices in a supply and demand market.

I am definitely going to educate my customers about this - thanks for the straight up info!
