The flowers & is a good resource for someone like yourself. Chances are you are going to be starting out as an everyday designer in a shop. Basic order filling and common wire service items are likely to be part of your experience. I say this because IIRC you are still young in your career and needing experience. There is something to be learned from doing routine order filling well. In many shops it's the bread and butter. W/S containers will be on shelves in many stores you may apply for. Use every resource available to you to hone your craft.

Design books are wonderful for inspiration, and others highlight the business aspect. Honestly, there is something to be gained from any of them even if it's the vendor listings in the back pages.

Even Martha Stewart's magazine will keep you on top of trendy colors, current styles, and basic floral design. Same with Better Homes and Gardens. Remember what seems common or ordinary to you is not the customers perception, and thes mags are available to the consumer with big money spent on research and layout.

Look for a package this week or beginning of next. ;)

I also use those magazines. I find the Wedding Flowers from the UK are great with their pics. Grace Ormande, does amazing with NEW looks and very cutting edge. I find the other brides mag, like manhattan bride, martha stewart are really for dresses and LOTS of ADvertising. You should get books by David Tutera, Preston Bailey, Wedding Valentine Style.

One more book to get - They are written in German ( I don't think an English version is available ), but for sheer floral design inspiration.......anything by Daniel Ost.

These designers have published books that you may have to work a bit to try and find, but if you can.....they are gorgeous volumes of design inspiration.

Elly Lin, Gregor Lersh, Monique Vande Berghe (sp), Tor Gundersen, Hitomi Gilliam, John Haines, Cathy's husband Phil and his mentor Silverio - I am almost sure that the designers who form the group Life3 have written books.

I am going to detour this thread for this posting......I mentioned the Floral Artist Daniel Ost. Here is his website. On it you can see just a sampling of his floral artistry.

I am also going to cross-post this in great floral industry websites thread.

hey BTW, I'm looking at my renewal form for Flowers&.

When I first signed up it was $42, now it's $54, so I guess I was wrong....I admit it!!!

Thanks for sharing. I was starting to be a little unhappy that my rep wasn't being truthful with me!

I loved PFD magazine when it was available, lived for that magazine, although I was just starting out and taking baby steps. I agree, Flowers & is a good magazine for beginners, and I learned basics by doing 75 FTD houses for Mothers Day back about 1985 or so, I've lost track.

I see a lot of groupings of one color with high style magazines and designers. Do they really get paid a hunk of money for just throwing 50 iris in a clear vase and leaning them to one side? I don't get it. If my customers wanted that I would have so much more time to get my other work done!

Trish

I must suck or at least not be as good of a designer as I think I am.

I think Flowers& is better than just a beginners magazine.
But I could be wrong, it does happen.

I think a lot of the stuff they've been showing for the past, oh I'd say 3 years is pretty darn cutting edge, at least for the average flower shop.

Funny this topic was brought up.
Today I was looking through some old Flowers& magazines. even as recent as like 2002 or 2005 issues were pretty ho hum. So I could see how if you haven't seen it lately it could be perceived as pretty basic and possibly boring and/or amaturish...

I should go to work for them, I love that magazine!

J/K Amy!

Shannon, it isn't that i find Flowers& as basic and or amateurish.....It does have quite a bit in both basic and high end design.....but it is still heavily geared to Teleflora and Teleflora products.....primarily because it is a Teleflora sponsored magazine.

FTD's Florist magazine was that same way.

Before Flowers&, there was Teleflorist......same basic magazine concept. Geared to what was popular at the time.

Aileen......You might want to see if you can find any old Bill Hixon books - He had/has the Hixon's School of Floral Design. I think you'll like those....particularly for their sixties/seventies/early eighties design stylings.

I wasn't suggesting it too be basic either, just a good resource overall, and great for an everyday shop and beyond. I put my money where my mouth is ' cause I buy it, and have for years.

magazines

Flower Inspirations, Profil and Fleur Creatif are pricey but great to see what the Europeans are doing. I wish that the Americans would put out something comparable. Our Florists Review and Flowers& are great for beginning and intermediate florists but we don't hav anything that is really "advanced."

I have ONE precious issue of PFD and yes, I agree with everyone that that one should be resurrected. I used that to study for AES (AIFD exam).

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Ebay win...a group of PFD mags. Also the gift from Melissa (Ivygreen). With good reads, I can still feel like my hands are still in flowers. I will just have to get jumping on the practice of what I read.

I plan on turning our finished basement into my own private inspiration/classroom area instead of a living space like we used it as before. In no way am I going to become a "BB" but I feel I need my own private getaway right now and the basement will just have to do!!

Oh Ricky, I don't know about that. Theres a little novelty stuff, but really not a lot. I wouldn't buy it if It were. I cannot stand novelty stuff.
The designs in Flowers and are much more contemporary than they used to be. It's a very impressive magazine if ya ask me.

Leenie, FYI, Profil is a very expensive magazine, and extremly high art, contemporary magazine, pretty over the top, and the only ones I've ever seen were in dutch., I think it was dutch any way.
I think it's like $100 for 4 issues, but I could be wrong.

I also like Flora magazine. They are out of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Subburb of Albuquerque. I think I was actually in Flora magazine last year, but I'm not sure,,, Someone came to take pictures when I was helping with the NMSFA convention and also for when I won the zia cup, but like I said, I don't know, kinda forgot about it till just now.

My personal subscriptions are Bride and bloom and flowers&. I cannot live with out them. I would love to subscribe to Profil if I could find it in English. and I keep wanting to subscribe to Flora, but I keep forgetting. Also I get flowers& for $42, and I don't advertise in it.

Also, another good point of reference as far as trends is home decor magazines. Home decor really will tell ya what the new hottest trends coming up will be.
Pretty much how trends go are: First fashion, then home decor, then floral will follow.

HTH.

You can subscribe to the English edition of Profil by going to the "Book" supplement in Florists Review or by going to Amazon.com

I loved the PFD mags as well and my last employer had 10 copies that I so wanted to take with me when I left! Currently we get Florist's Review, Canadian Florist, Floral Expressions, Profil, and Flora which has some great stuff and practical ,easy to reproduce design ideas. I have put in a subscription to Flowers& after I got a hold of a copy at a Gift show... last time I had seen one was 10 years ago and they truly have come a long way Shannon. I am anxious for the arrival of my first one.

Most of my older floral magazines......I am packing away due to my house renovation.....but I am not getting rid of them.

The floral magazines though coming back inside my house when done......All my issues of PFD.

Yes we have lots of old copies of BFD as well....
