I had a cascading bridal bouquet to make today. I use floral lock, but it is so messy and I am always worried that I missed a stem. Just curious, do all of you lock after the bouquet is made, or can you lock as you are designing???
Any tricks to get the stick thing into and around the flowers without getting lock on the blooms?

We definately ALWAYS use flora lock on each and every bridal party boka. Yes it is messy, so always use it over the garbage can. I certainly don't want the flowers in the bride or brides-maids boka falling out. You need to lock the flowers after the boka is done, otherwise the oasis is sealed and the stems are too difficult to go in. You just need to get used to using it.

I will confess. I put oasis tube glue on each stem as I insert. I make sure not to get it on the cut end. I apply it about 1/2" from the end and it works! If I'm still concerned I will use the tube glue to lock in all greens and stems around the outside edge when I'm finished designing the bouquet.
I just couldn't handle the 5 full minutes of shaking the spraycan & unclogging the skinny little applicator straw so when I ran out of 'assistants' to do it for me I changed the procedure. It works for us! Anybody else?????

The only time I use Floral Lock is when I think about it.

which isn't often. It's a good idea, but normally I just forget to use.

one little tip, that I can pass on is, if you make an insertion and then pull out and re-insert in a different location, plug the original hole with a flower stem or a wooden pick

Also make sure you do not cross your stem insertions. One point of radiation!

Also also..... When I service a wedding, Prior to the wedding service, I hand the bouquets out to the bride and BM's for pictures. After pictures are taken I take the bouquest back and do not let the womean handle them until 10 minutes before they walk down the aisle.

After that, I am not responsible!

I also use floralock - For more than just wedding bouquets - yesterday morning, we had a large heart entirely out of white carnations, bordered with white roses, and a pink rose cluster in the center.....900 bucks.....24 inch solid heart form - 200 white carnations used in the heart plus other flowers.....I floralocked the outer edge and in the interior of that large heart.....I did one side while another employee did the other side.....and I am glad we did.

Floralock is messy - I use a bouquet stand and spray the floralock while the bouquet is in the stand.......I dont hold the bouquet to spray. However.....let it dry for a bit and that bride can fling that bouquet like a cowboys lasso and those flowers ain't budgin' !!!

Rick

you inserted 200 carnations in a 24 inch heart!?

a solid Oasis Heart????

with white roses and a cluster of pink roses in the center?

two questions

why did you use so many carnations? I have done 24 inch solid oasis wreaths several times and I can't imagine using that many carnations.

how many roses did you use?

how much did this thing weigh?

joe

ok that was three questions. ;)

oh yea, how did you cost it out?

and did you personally deliver this to the funeral home? at $900 clams, I know I would not have trusted it in the care of anyone except me.

OK.... SO I AM ASKING ALOT MORE QUESTIONS!.... LO.L

rick, your post intrigued me... humor me with some answers.

I was not in the shop when the sale was made......but yesterday morning......that is what the manager told me was that the family was insistent on carnations to fill out the form.....they did not want white cushions,

They also wanted white roses placed around the edge of the heart like you would place a wavy ribbon edge.

The center of the heart had pink sprays and 6 clusters of three red roses each for 6 family members.

So, I help to hang the heart on a wooden easel, start floralocking the carnations and other flowers....and in the meantime, the manger is freaking everytime my foot gets near the easel. The order form had 900 bucks on it for this one piece. I am assuming she costed it out the day before as the heart was mostly complete except for the rose border and the center clusters.

Our driver is exceptional and she delivered this. As to why she used so many flowers......I have no clue as I have long since given up on trying to figure out her line of thinking. I could have used less flowers and still gave them a great visual value worthy of the bucks.

Floral Lock

I use floral lock on all wedding bouquets. I also use it for Alstromeria boutineers. I wire as usual then give a tiny shot of Floral lock around the hip where the petals all connect. When its dry, then I tape.
I decided to do this because I was at a wedding where the petals broke away from the hip at the reception. This method can make it thru even the roughest Best man. Works for me. Does anyone have a trick for preparing your hands ahead of time.....besides gloves? I sometimes use Pokon on my hands before I use floral Lock. This seems to help. Debbie

does anyone have a tip on how to keep a can of that stuff going after the first use. If I don't use the up the can for the whole job, it never works for the next job. and yes, I do the upside down cleaning. thanks

Last weekend I put the handle of the bouquet holder right through the center of a piece of paper towel and then held onto the handle of the bouquet while I Floral-locked it well. Since it was all roses, I wanted to make sure that they weren't going anywhere. After I was finished, I set the bouquet, with the paper towel still under it, into a vase and let it sit for maybe ten minutes. Then I removed the paper towel and finished off the bouquet handle and all.

This paper towel worked better than holding it over the trash can and rubber gloves. I always ended up with Floral-lock on my hands and looking nasty for two days, no matter how hard I tried. Not last weekend!! Wahoo!!!

Nail Polish Remover

On the post how to use over take the straw out, dip in nail polis remover the type with sponge in it, then take the can and dip that as well the sprayer it will take all residue off of it so it can be used again and again for you,

Also I have never had a mess with this, so just for giggle made a simple on today to see, How I do it, so when all flowers where in place shot in the center of the thing, and just held it and sprayed, saw the water coming out of the thing, and no mess on it what so ever, Maybe that is the trick in the center of the holder, whose knows, but that works for me.

I think that most people use way too much of the stuff and it spills out of the holder. Also if there are a lot of extra holes the stuff will fly out everywhere or a bouquet that is way overstuffed that has no foam left will be messy. Some people take that straw and stick it into 15 different spots and spray away using half a can...That can be quite messy also.

I know I probably do use too much but no matter how hard I try I cannot keep it from dripping. :)

As far as cleaning the straw, if you let it dry with the "stuff" on it, when you go to use it next, you can just peel it off and it leaves you with a clean opening.

That is why I tend and trend not to use the stuff. Everytime I try to use it for the second or third wedding, the can is clogged.

I have turned it upside down to blow out the wet glue, but it still gets clogged.

anyway...... i keep it around for the other designers.

I also do this. I use it on other flowers like that as well such as Freesia, etc...
