I don't have a picture of one in fresh flowers. Hopefully, I can make one in permanents before too long to show you.

Cut of all the heads of xanth doubles and then grade them small and medium/large, use the small ones to edge around the outside and then the bigger ones towards the centre. As you put in the bigger ones, raise them slightly so that you are creating a dome effect, it looks more like a pillow then.

I assume a xanth is a cushion pom (chrysanthemum)?

Yes, Xanth is chrysanthemums. - There have been some changes in the nomenclature of Chrysanthemums.

Chrysanthemum used to be the Genus name of the plant, then it changed to Dendranthama, now, some species are known as Xanthema.

Sometimes a bloom, a petal, or even a chromosome of the plant DNA can be enough to change it's classifiation.

To add to this......Xanth ( pronounced -Zanth ) - can also be part of the Chrysanthemum pronounciation - CRY-ZANTH-THE-MUM

Just for information......and because I thought it interesting,

Here is the full botanical classification for the common pompon.

It reads in this order - Kingdom, Order, Family, Tribe, Genus, Species.

So the common mum reads botanically.....
Plantacea Asterales Asteracea Anthenidae Dendranthema indicum

I used my trusty 3D drawing program to sketch out a quick illustration of the 'Streets of Gold' adaptation of the 'Gates Ajar' sympathy set peice.

The 'traditional' base/form we get is completly made of styrofoam....unlike the UK versions, the gates are not metal and there is no cross on top.

(see first picture )

The forms we get come in a package of five peices. A rectangular base, the gothic arch, two gates, a set of stairs with four steps.

The 'traditional way of setting up the base is the arch is mounted on the rectangular base, the gates are attached to the inside of the arch facing rearward, and the steps set in-between the gates.

----------------------------------------------------

Now, the illustration shows how I alter the forms to create the 'Streets of Gold' adaptation. I mount the arch as before, I mount the base on a larger sheet of foam. I cut the steps apart so I have two sets of stair with two steps each ( when this is done, the height of the steps is the same as a normal peice of styrofoam ), I then mount 1 set steping up to the base from the lower sheet and the other set at the end of the lower sheet.

I cover the arch, the steps and the path inbetween in gold mylar ribbon. I cover the gates in gold paint and glitter. ( If you want the 'pearly gates' look, spray the gates cream and cover with diamond dust iridescent glitter )

The raised darker green areas show where I put various sizes of oasis iglu holders and small blocks of oasis and the whole edge is wrapped in a waterproof ribbon to keep everything neat. The unpainted styrofoam is covered in sheet moss dyed green to give a manicured lawn feel to the design.

------------------------------------------

Hope this helps to cement the idea......As soon as I can with this new job, I'll try to create one in permanents and photograph it for you all.

Not sure about the pom bit, over here we call them doubles but yeah i just use the xanth just to shorten for chrysanthemum but like rick says the latin is dendranthema, i think most people use the common name though. The pom ones are a bit rounder i think but i could be wrong, it happens occasionally :)

Back to the orginal question........ .................. This design is very "in" in chicago.......some want a pave version and some want a satin pillow with a large corsage attached .......here they are placed 'in' the casket and almost always have a small banner that says 'dearest grand or great grand mom/pa'
