How To Accommodate For Cheap Customers.

I'm the first to admit that I do not know about mega tags, or links etc.

But I do know alot about customer service.
I don't care if someone comes in to spend 100.$ or 5$.
All I care about is that they come in.
In my shop everyone gets the royal treatment, giftwrapping, special instructions etc.
I can't tell you how many of the 5$ orders have resulted in huge projects for us. And those projects have resulted in terrific press. And the press has resulted in more great orders.
If you stop and calculate the numbers, usually it is the "cheap" customer, who spends five or ten dollars a week ,that keep your doors open...you can count on them, you can write a business plan on their spending habits.
They are the people that pay our invoices, our staff wages, our rent.
Thank God for the "Cheap" people. They keep me ,and you, in business.

Eric- is there a way to work the word cheap into a phrase of some sort- "Why settle for cheap flowers? send a thoughtful message with ..."
I'm sure you can think of something :)

Joanne,
I totally agree - and they're usually the ones who apologize for not being able to spend more, but they come in more often than the big spenders and they're always so grateful for the royal treatment.

Yikes this thread is getting kinda weird now.

So looking at twiggy's advice it does appear that maybe I am insulting our customers by having a link that says cheap flowers.

It use to be called affordable flowers at one time. But man not to many people looking for "affordable flowers" in their daly searches.

The word cheap is used so much and I have the data to prove it. I've tried it in the meta tags but the link works much better.

Would the word budget work for you... "Bouquets on a Budget" or "Budget Blooms" or something like that?

Eric, since the SEO of "cheap flowers" works for you, why not add an additional catagory with other wording such as what was suggested from other posters?

That way you could have the best of both worlds.

We do a 'credit crunch bunche' but have put it on hold for over christmas as the flower prices are just rediculous at the moment. People don't seem as insulted by this term and happily order these with 'a thats just what I need'. We don't do any shopping by price point categories on our website, but we have lower prices available in each section anyway.

But you know that one customer will call and say whats the different between budget flowers and cheap flowers?

Just kidding thats a good idea.

Eric,

I have not read this whole thread, but I have to say that maybe this is one reason you are struggling....I have said before that florists lack in supplying the consumer with price ranges between 9.99 and 30 or 40 dollars....That is a whole lot of wasted production time and sales time, because there is a huge group of people that this is where their gift giving price falls...It is not always that they are cheap, it is the fact that that is where they have set their value on the gift giving....Is there no reason that you cannot offer items within that price range without offending them, by assuming they are cheap...

I do understand that we all want the consumer to spend 40-50 or more dollars and some businesses are modeled to only do that and that is great if you are in a very affluent town with very few florists, few if any grocery floral dept or roadside stands....these are far and few between, places line boca raton, fl or nantucket, ma or key west, these are all exclusive areas that control the types of commerce to not be low end purposly and it helps withstand those types of business...i will imagine that your area ahas a good mix of both affluent and regular consumers....so wouldn't it make sense that you would want to cater to all people...rich and not so..especially looking to the internet, where bargain shoppers are abounding...

I know you want to carry and sell the nicest flowers, I do to, but the reality is that the day I decided to not turn anyone away due to price, was the day I opened my eyes to my own business....This year I priced all of my products differently, I priced according to how labor intensive they actually were rather than on the 20% labor charge....I am selling more than ever and gaining the local customer, people are talking about my business and what a great value it is and I am cutting down the fears that the florist is too expensive..all the while making a good profit on 100% orders all mine...I do not sell things ever at a loss, but I do sell certain items less than others because of their ease from bench to delivery truck....

I find that many "cheap" orders are for people who want a small thank you or an appreciation type gift, hostess gift, teachers, get well at the hospital (short stay gift)....I have also seen that if I offer lower priced items, they let down their guard and often time buy and upgraded item, because they like it...I have heard things like, "wow for just a few dollars more than the grocery store, I got so much more and it looks so much better. I am glad I made the extra stop." I would rather have 10 15.00 regular bouquet buyers than the once a year dozen rose valentine customer...The reason is 2 fold, you get more money from them year after year because they are flower buyers, they genuinely llike them and want to buy them. They will also think of you often, and tell other people about you.

You are so right!!!! lol

Maybe the "cheap" catagory could be wrapped flowers....budget could be basic small arranged...and so forth.

Lori I do offer those bouquets for walk ins.

Heck I even have some nice presentation style bouquets for delivery at $19.99. I like to see anyone offer some of those.

You know wlkin customers want the world. It would be cool to offer the same set up as a grocery store.

Maybe its time I do this.
