Hydrangea problems for a wedding

Joe, If nothing else - There is the Design Master Just for Flowers spray tint line that can help to adjust the hydrangea color to your needs.

Also, I cannot recall everything she siad, but at a recent SC Teleflora Unit meeting that I attended, The presenter, Susan Overton-Ayala AIFD gave us a tip that would hold a hydrangea for up to three weeks.
I know that part of it had to do with extrmely hot water........Perhaps Carol, CHR, or another of our AIFD members on FC can contact Susan and post this information for all of us.

Thanks Rick,

Earlier this year, prior to you finding FC, I performed an experiment using white Hydrangeas and documented this experiment here on FC. If memory serves me, I kept the white hydrangeas alive and well for several weeks. Shears actually worked better than cutting with a knife.

Hot water and no preservative. I just recut the stems once a week and replaced the water once a week.

I am also familiar with Just for flowers, I just do not want to paint 300 hydrangeas, if at all possible. too much labor.

Inquiring minds want to know...

Who the heck figured out the Vodka thing anyway...I mean in the first place...must have been an accidental spillage while pouring a shot ;)

In our local florist association, we have a running joke concerning one of our local designers.....He has given so many care tips over the years and indeed most of them have had various alcohols as part of this....that we joke that his flowers stay drunker than most florists do.

If I had to guess, I bet the alchohol makes the water wetter. Easier absorption.

Glycerin will make water wetter and we used to have a bottle of glycerin in the shop (greenhouse for a reason).

Organic chemistry was a long time ago, and I can't see the ph changing much. It might.

I keep seeing OH at the end of molecular structure.

Too many lines, too early in the day. Where oh where is my co-hort V????
:eek::faint:

Flower buyer, but also, if you are using these for the girls be careful on the spraying, a trick that we use to keep them from wilting, is when you get them put in fridge, don't cut at all, just lay them on a shelf or even in the box they came in, then a day later cut and put in hot hot water, with some vodka, that will harden them up for you, did the week before when it was well way over 98 here, for out door wedding didn't loose any of them, also you could try June.com

Hope this helps some.

That is a brilliant tip thank you.

Well, my local wholesaler is coming through for me.

He had to get them on order today. I am only buying half what I need to match the colors in the picture.

Depending on size, etc. we may be able to squeek through. If not I should be able to get some mediums hydrangeas from FB.

He ordered Purple and Shocking Blue. sounds interesting.

Hey Joe,
I just ordered the holland hydrangeas on fb, think i got a tad lucky as i paid $3.40 each, and they are SPECTACULAR> it was my first try at the holland auction aspect of fb. might try it last minute to get a better deal.
good luck.

Hi Parie;

I am going to try to buy some cheaper on FB today and Fri, however, even if I do get them at $3.40, I will still have shipping costs. Holland hydrangeas are boxed 20 stems per box. Weight is estimated at 30 lbs and my shipping costs are min 47 cts/lb. not counting the flat rate fees, fuel surcharges and that I will have to drive 120 miles round trip to pick up at STL airport.

In other words, I still have to get the unit cost down below $2 on FB to make it a better buy than my local wholesaler.

With that said, You did great on buying those hydrangeas at $3.40!!!!

thanks, parie
