I want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of you who responded. I feel encouraged, full of ideas, and ready. I could not have done it without you, TRULY! Not that I have done anything yet, but I feel so much more confident about the whole thing. We have shyed away from events pretty much in entirety. With my mom's age, my MS, and my husband's numerous leg problems (so far has not interfered with riding though :bouncy: ) we're a pretty sorry team. This project has given me a shot in the arm and I just feel really good about it. So THANKS so very much!

And V, thanks for saying what you said about me, that was really cool :thumbsup

I was thinking about suggesting putting something to wrap around those huge cylindrical support pillars. Any suggestions?

I love all your bright :idear: ideas, my mind is really going now. I do love the lights idea. Do you think using any netting or tulle with them is too weddingy or bridal showery?

Oh, and Dazeal, I had to giggle when you said something about those faux arrangements on the coffee tables. Those were dead funeral arrangements. Sometimes the church ends up with some of the ones they and church members sent for a funeral of a family member in the church. Two of them were from our shop. I should have taken the initiative to throw them out, but did not really think of it until you said that.

Yes I agree the staircases are quite industrial looking in the pic. I think I can attach things quite nicely with all the poles and openings. I probably never thought of them that way since they're so quiet when in use. To tell you the truth I see them every week and until I took pictures I did not remember what they looked like. My husband and I use the elevator every Sunday morning when we go to the Coffee Cafe' on the second floor.

One more question. Any resources for the battery operated lights?

I will add a tad...

Patty, everyone has been EXTREMELY helpful and wonderful, I will only add that what you should stay away from is anything that hints at a "wedding" look. no offense Dazeal but twinkle lights very wedding-y, how about some uplights under the trees and in strategic corners. creates a more modern look which once you posted the pics is pretty obvious. and on that note, why not use purples in your color scheme? that is quite an impressive church and looks to be more contemporary in architecture and furnishings. keep to clean lines and no FROU FROU> if you know what i mean. ie no tulle, stay away from DRAPING> looks like a wedding. I LOVE the wall of flower idea, and like one poster said, use purple dendros strung and what an amazing effect and once again if you will back light this "wall" WOW! have fun!

I don't quite understand the flower strands on the glass wall. I'd appreciate a little further explanation. The purple dendrobians sound absolutely gorgeous and very "wow!

Isabetho - can you explain it a little more please? Thanks much!

I agree... just say no to tulle. I love the idea of up lights... very dramatic. While I like twinkle lights, in this space the uplights would be most effective.

After seeing your pics, the glass wall isn't quite how I envisioned it. That is a HUGE wall! But the strands of blooms could be very effective with the right placement within the space. There might be an area where this could be more effective. Is that a balcony I see in the pic?

Dazeal has some great ideas! We put the strands together just as Dazeal described with the rose petals, only with single blooms. Buttons work great for this too. You just thread the blooms through the fishing line, leaving as much space in between as you want. I usually do them 2 or 3 inches apart, using as many strands as the concept calls for. With the petals, dendrobs, and buttons there is no need for a needle. The line will push right the the bloom with a thicker gauge line.
The fusia and white dendrobs would be a wow!

Sometimes we use the strands coming down from big arrangements, hanging off of curly willow or bamboo shooting way up and out. I'll try to find a pic for you. We are also doing a wedding on the 14th where we will be utilizing the strands. I'll take a pic of that for you too if you'd like. For the wedding we will be installing them on a fairly large wall, but not as big as your glass wall.

I agree with prarie and don't think you need the tulle or anything foofy. Keep it clean, simple, and make bold statements. Remember simple doesn't always mean easy or cheap. I'd reather see one really bold statement than several so-so ones. Don't get overwhelmed with the size of the space and just focus on the areas where you can create an effective wow.

Think first about your entrances and food tables. The entrance is the first thing the guests will see and the food is where everyone will gather. I'd put most of your energy into that.

Lighting is more important that most people think. You might even consider hiring a lighting person to come in and pin spot the large focal arrangements. It would be ashame if your masterpieces were washed out and lost in that big space, especially if the lights will be dim. There are some event lighting experts out there that can do some really amazing things that could add a whole other demension to the decor.
Votives, votives everywhere will also add a nice ambiance.

I'd be happy to hash out more ideas with you but I don't want to muddy the waters and overload too many ideas. It sounds like you have plenty of great ideas and the foundations for a fabulous event! When there's a will there's a way. You have it and you'll do GREAT!

Thanks Iza for your warm words. :)

Hey I'm glad we all agree... no foo foo tulle lol

I like Iza's ideas about the lighting positions on focal points of the room.

Now that I think about it, with those ceilings and the clean lines, I have to agree with Parie about the lights.. save the twinkles for the Christmas ball and set them to slow motion. :)

Am I blind, but did you say what time of day this will be?

Another idea I came up with it.. find out what they are serving, food wise, and if there are any fruits or veggies, use these in any of the tight compact arrangements you might have. Like little posies in the bathrooms, or as centerpieces.

One more thing, when hanging the strands at the top, place them like 12 inches away from the window so they slighty move, give the wall an illusionary affect of movement. And if I were you and there is going to be kids there, make sure the strand is 8 feet above the ground.

Ewww Ewwww Make CorRings out of the dendros for the Preacher's Wives!!! I just love those things Mark. :) I can't quit thinking about them :) I want to wear one. lol

Another Thought...

on the wall concept... we have just done a "lounge" area in a huge airplane hangar where the "walls" were hanging strands of green spiders. they looked fab! alot more coverage than say the dendro blooms which we all agree would be beautiful, but for coverage and cost efficiency the spiders in lavendar might work great. we strung them on #1 satin using a heavy gauge wire as a "needle" worked great and went rather smoothly, also could do them up ahead as well, as spiders are also rather hardy. I'm going to reiterate and repeat what I and Isabetho have said. LIGHTING, LIGHTING, LIGHTINTG! i can't express what that will do for an event.
patty email me and i will send you some pics of the above mentioned event and anything else that might help!

I'm with the 'no tulle, no twinkle lights' idea. I've seen far too many events that wanted 'elegant' get bombed with tulle, twinkle lights and balloons. There's a lot that can be done without resorting to them.

Sheeeeesh Brandon... I had no idea:dunno::wide:

I'll get Debi on a "masculine" version Monday :)

So are we talking about strands of flower horizonally placed across the windows? I can't assume anything since I have never seen them. From one end until the other or just the middle area of the windows?

As for time - I do not know. I will be talking to him in just a little while and I have lots of questions for him.

Thanks again!

lol Mark :) Please do.

Mark's lead designer came up with these. I'm in love with this idea. It reminds me of the Victorian days when people wore flowers to speak to others.

Paire, it's just my opinion, but spider mums are FTDish, and would stay away from that look. The nice thing about dendros or rose petals, they are light and add a subtle touch on a large scale. And call me weird, but I'd love to see these dainty strand move ever so gentle in the small currents of that room. If it is at night, then lightning will be key on these walls.

Lady biker, read my original post, it'll explain the strands. They hang down, not side to side... and as for how much, that is your call. You don't want to over saturate it, but yet you want it to be noticed. This strand idea would be a great thing for some of your helpers to do as they sit around and sip coffee. I said petals at first, but like Iza's idea ( I think it ws Iza) about dendros. With dendros, you could do this 2 days before the event. :) Make sure to recruit your husband to find out about a ladder. WE MUST have a ladder! lol

Yeah find out what time of day will this happen? Because of your windows, this could change a lot.

Not horizontally Patty... vertically, draping down... it's a great look. I too prefer focussing on areas in such a large place... high impact areas around the room is more powerful than having all your hard work scattered about and therefore lost to the eye... and yes like Parie I believe lighting is the key to successful displays. :)
