OK, so I had some time on my hands this morning, having arrived to monitor FC a couple hours early, due to a LATE arriving home wayward step-son this morning....

I decided to clean up my office storage area, and came across the January FTD directory, so I took the plastic off and had a gander...probably have not opened one in two years...

It amazes me how many STUPID FLORISTS there are paying for LARGE ads in the printed directory...while there seems to be fewer than there used to be, there's still a lot... lowest cost for a paid 1.5" ad is $35/mo

:hammer:

When I see those big ads I always think...there is a florist that FTD offered a free full page ad to in order to keep them...lol

I cannot tell you the last time I actually looked in the paper directory

Teleflora has done that

He's awarding the million to people who refer the most new folks to Flowerchat (Gatekeepers heads will spin). ;)

Choose positivity over negativity!

Mark, Why the negative remarks directed at your fellow florists? Some good people here on FlowerChat have those ads in the current directory. If you look at Winston-Salem, North Carolina, you will see a half page ad for George K. Walker Florist. Joe is one smart cookie! Most of us could learn a lot from Joe and his operation. I know you are a good guy and just want you realize what you are saying. We retailers are all fighting to survive. Let's stick together and stay positive!

Why do you think Joe has such a big ad?

You're right Frank... lost my head there for a minute... silly florists would have been more appropriate...

As for Joe, he is a smart guy, and a good friend...but IMO paper directories are obsolete. I mean, 800flowers allows you to opt out...why not FTD and TF?

I think some florists have basically forgotten they even have these ads and have just become complacent with these things that worked well in the past. But, it's a different game out there today, and if it was me, I would opt to cancel the directory ads and put advertising dollars into my website or do more local advertising.

Also, one thing the w/s do when a member sends a cancellation letter in, is to give them a free directory ad for 3 months or so if they agree to stay onboard. Then, inevitably, the florist forgets to evaluate whether that free ad generated more business for them, and just continues with the ad after the free period expires. So, the w/s gets the saved membership and creates more revenue when they start charging for the ad. What a win-win for the w/s!. nothing for the florist. Ugh!

You know what those big. . . .

books will be good for?

Grandma had the Monkey Ward and Sears Catalogs in the outhouse out of necessity. . . . . .

Are there florist shops out there where internet isn't available? Just curious. If so the books remain a valuable tool for them.

When I was in the wire services,I always used my unopened directory for a doorstop in the summer. My rep came by one day & saw it there. He had a fit. I told him it was a waste of $ as I could get everything over the dove. All he could say is, what if your computer was down. Duh, use an old directory, it doesn't change enough to print one every quarter, incase my computer was down

Good point V....the shop I worked at in Ca did not have internet access.

still "doo"......place up north still has an outside place to "doo".......for "overflow"....

We have internet and so we have Dove Plus, because it is so slow and sometimes doesn't work well when looking up most anything, I resort to the directory quite often. It's sad because that is quicker and less of a hassle than using the search function on the dove. I also use Yahoo maps, or used to, to locate florists nearby my destination, they've since changed their maps and it stinks.

There are a few towns in Maine that do not have a broadband or dsl service available (but if they have satellite, they can have internet access).
If you have cable TV, you can have internet.
If you have a phone you can have internet.
Now the phone way, sometimes is still s l o w
depending on how far from a switching station you are. It could boil down to dialup speed. But there are many ways to have internet and some small shops just don't feel the needed $$ are worth it to have in shop.
(I "fibbed" to my internet provider...I have a residential line at the shop. Why should I pay more for there when I'm on the internet just as much at home as I am at the shop)
