I returned today from my fabulous trip to New Zealand and Australia. When I was in Auckland, I was able to attend the Ellerslie Flower Show. It is billed as the largest flower show in the Southern Hemisphere. I did see some great work and some just ordinary.....but, could tell that someone has certainly studied design in that part of the world.

While there, I visited with many florists and encouraged each of them to join Flower chat.....so, we will see if any of them carry through.

The vegetation in both countries is incredible. I had to cut lots of roadsidia and make bouquets along the way because it was so beautiful and my hands just wouldn't leave it alone.

My overall opinion of the shops I saw was pretty much like the U. S. shops....some are really good and some are horrible.

The one thing that really amazed me was the price of products in both countries. We should not complain about our prices after seeing what they live with each day. Example: An item we retail for $10.00 was usually about $30.00. This seemed to be true in every area of finance. It does include tax though. They also have government health care which I am sure I helped pay for with my purchases. It was really interesting to hear the different guides tell how they felt about their health care....I heard both sides of the issue.

I was able to visit almost very major town in New Zealand. Then, went to Melbourne and Sydney. Sailing into Sydney Harbour is such a gorgeous sight. While there, I did get to attend a Symphony at the Opera House. Then spent a few days at the Great Barier Reef....what an amazing sight to behold.....then on to the rain forrest where I saw all the flowers and greens we pay high prices for. It truly was the trip of a lifetime....but, really glad to be back home.

WOW! Sounds like an amazing trip, I envy you. I love the product we get from Australia.

Definately....what we can take for granted you guys pay heaps for. Then again...it works both ways .... I wish our Peonie Roses season lasted a little bit more than a month ( up here in Queensland ).

Real happy that you had a good time Carol....its always such an eye-opener to see different things, places, food & people. Hope us Aussies treated you very nicely.

Welcome back Carol. You've been missed. Glad you had a glorious time. I too have itchy hands when I'm travelling and I love roadsidia bouquets. :)

Did you notice any value in the "US$, or are the prices just that high over there?
See any signs of improvement over there?
Glad to hear the trip was successful, jetlag?????
Have a great season to you and Buddy.

Welcome Back Carol......Glad you had a wonderful trip. Now, Like Connie.....Pictures.....We wanna see pictures.

Australia

Thanks for all the welcome homes. It's nice to know I was missed.

Flame, the Aussie people are awsome. I would have no trouble moving to that area if I ever left the U. S. The people in both countries were so friendly and helpful. You do live in a great country.

A good night's sleep and I don't seem to have any jet lag, Eddie. As far as the U. S. dollar.....it seemed to me that there was almost an even exchange in Australia. I got almost dollar for dollar at the bank. You asked about signs of improvement.....I'm not quite sure what you are referring to......the new government or what?

I traveled with a group of four people and we took over a thousand pictures, so, when they get sorted out, I will try to post a few. Keep in mind that I am computer illerate and will have to work on doing this. Several of them were at the Ellerslie Flower Show.....some of their work might be interesting to you.

did you do south AND north New Zealand??

I flew into Auckland for 3 days and then went on a cruise completely around the North and the South Islands. The weather would change daily as we went further South and then started warming up again as we came up on the other side of the Islands. We stopped everyday at a port and took some kind of a tour into the area. Sometimes, we went by train into the interior, but always had a tour lined up. From there, we went to Tasmania for a day. Then went to Melbourne where we went to a wildlife park and watched kangaroos and koalas in their natural habitat. The 16 day cruise ended in Sydney. I spent a few days there and then flew up to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.

I really can't say what my favorite thing was because every day was so beautiful and interesting. Have you been to N.Z? It has some of the most gorgeous country in the whole world. I guess my favorite scene was in the fjiords in South NZ. But, my eyes always went back to the extraordinary plants. I brought back flowers everyday to the ship and made centerpieces.

The ship had a contest to see who could build the best boat. I collected roadsidea and make a pool float. Everyone on the ship was amazed and naturally, it won for the most beautiful floating boat. It was fun to see how amazed the passengers were at what I could create out of things they didn't even see growing. The floral industry did get a lot of publicity on the cruise.
