I do not have the luxury right now of training a designer. My designer who left was our wedding and party consultant with 40 years experience. He was excellent at consulting and closing the deal, and a very good designer.

We pay our designers upwards of $12.00 per hour. They get 2 weeks vacation, 5 paid holidays, one bonus day, paid birthday, 4 paid sick days, ability to purchase at cost. They work every other Saturday and never on Sunday (even though we are open). I do not think that that is too shabby. If I could afford to pay people more I would. Our cost of living her is nothing compare to places like NYC and Chicago, Philadelphia, etc... So just what do they pay in places like Durango, Co.? I would also be interested in hearing what average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment there is also so that the answer makes sense, that is if you are willing to share this info.

I would definitely be willing to pay more if ... I knew that they were able to sell up, sell weddings profitably, be willing to work the extra time when parties and weddings were booked, to name a few of the important additions to just being a good designer. One of my highest paid designers not only had no willingness to work beyond her 8:00-4:00 job she booked a week off twice this summer when it happened to be our heaviest wedding weekends, 3 weddings on each of those.

I have another designer that is a good designer but her customer service sucks, and she is afraid of computers, so tell me why should she make more. Her value is limited.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

I feel for you dear, but number one was right in some way, I like for folks to do it my way as well, But on the above post, I just pay my chicklets way to much, but they have been with me for a long long time, and you paying 12.00 darn, That is good, because I hear the rate is like 9.50 and up so hey and you take care of them, So that is all that matter, when you least expect it, someone great will walk into, your door,

Hugs to you dear..

Joan, I think you offer an pretty dang good package!! 2 weeks paid vacation! paid birthday! paid extra day! stuff at cost! plus the paid holidays! That's awesome.

The cost of living in Durango is pretty high. 7.9% sales tax, I don't know what a 2 bed apt costs but I know teeny tiny little studios run 600-750. Gas still isn't under $3.

I know the house next door to me was 325k and it was 2 bed, one bath, no garage, 900 sq foot tiny house.

I know the cost of living in places like Albuquerque and Oklahoma city are way cheaper than Durango.

Durango is just expensive. And I seriously don't know why.

People need to be paid according to their skills, willingness to work, willingness to get done what needs to get done, etc.

For me this isn't just a job while I'm in college, seems everybody worked in a flower shop in college.

This is how I make my living. I take it very very seriously. But I'm rare as an employee, not an owner.

So I think you may just be having a bad run of it. Keep your chin up!
Ms. or Mr. Perfect fit will show up eventually!

Joan: Good staff are always hard to fine. After a while you develop a feel for hiring, i.e. "a gut feeling"! I've hired prospects when I had no need for them just because I knew they were too good to pass up. If they have no experience show them how to do something and evaluate how well they pick it up. My design manager came to me without experience but brought a couple artificial wedding bouquets he had made (he was trained as a cook). I hired him. MADE him work in the office a couple years and he's been designing for us for many, many years.

Joan your compensation package sounds like an excellent place for a designer. I surely would apply if NY was anywhere near UT...

Where are you advertising for the job? Lot's of people swear by Craigslist.

Shoot, I'd try for Joan's postion......but I don;t know how those people would handle my pronounced southern accent.
