Customer just requested this bouquet they called it "Jesus Called - Cowboy Answered"

I've googled it and dunno wth they are talking about - think I've seen or heard something somewhere before but fuzzy about it.

Anybody got any idearz?

Thanks in Advance

Isn't that the one with the phone in it?
and or a clock with the time of death?
It's been at least 25 years since we've had one of those.

O-M-G.

I wish I had a picture of the first (and only) one I've ever seen.

It was made of hot pink carnations, on a rectangle styrofoam board. Lots and lots of baby's breath sprayed hot pink with a hot pink banner that read "Jesus Called." With a hot pink jeweled encrusted toy cell phone.

This was for a 65 year old woman. The sender was so furious she carried the arrangement into the back room of the funeral home.

I can't make this stuff up :fdevil:

I've not seen one but yes, it is the one with the phone in it. Jerome Raska was the first person I heard make mention of this when I came into the industry.

I absolutely DETEST this piece, Basically, all the ones I have seen are in the general shape of a pillow with a toy telephone mounted on the design with a banner that reads "Jesus called" To me, they are in a word.....HIDEOUS !!!!!

If there is one peice that I just simply refuse to do for a customer......dollars or not.....this one is it.

We do these JB, but we make a standing spray and put the toy phone in the middle with the receiver hanging over to the side and a banner that says Jesus called and ....answered. or we do a 12x16 peice of styrofoam and pack like a bible peice and do the same thing except instead of bible you insert the phone and the banner, I also do a spray of flowers on the side the phone's not on!! Hope this helps.
Kind of a bummer day for me today, I have work on a 7 yr old that has been sick for a long time. Still very sad, please say a prayer for her family her name is Samantha. Thank you!!

hey twila,

it was good speaking with you today.

i hope you post a pic of it. I especially would love to see jb arranging it.

joe

The reason I detest this particular peice so much is the Jesus would not need a telephone of all things. In the past though....I have done this design as a modified gates ajar design. Basically I used the gates ajar styrofoam set into a standing easel spray. The archway and gates I sprayed gold, Covered the base in ribbon.....and used a small resin statuary of Jesus or the Teleflora Jesus figurine from a number of years ago positioned in the middle of the archway.
To be honest, back a number of years ago when my older brother passed away, his wife wanted me to do that particular piece with the telephone and I told her no. I told her I would do my version of it and everybody loved it and got the message.

I would just like to point out, and I mean no offense or disrespect to you or anyone else:

It is not our place to determine what is tasteful or not tasteful for our clients. Our task is to take their idea, and provide a beautiful interpretation that respects their wishes, and conveys the true meaning of what they are trying to say.

The words "Jesus Called" is from an old-time hymn -- Methodist or Baptist as I recall. I first saw a beautiful sympathy piece with a old black telephone with the phone off the hook in the mid to late 1960's. (the phone was the focal point, in the middle of the piece. Telephones in those days were costly, so this was not inexpensive to do).

There is a different hymn that reflects the "Gates of Heaven Open Wide....".
I remember several pieces from the 1960's & 1970's with actual wooden or rod iron gates fabricated into them. (Not easy to do back them).

I know about this kind of stuff because my Grandma, an old wise woman from the hills of W. Pa., used to sing these hymns to me. In our area, I still hear some of these same songs, and others such as "The old Rugged cross" or "Amazing Grace" used in services today.

Just a few years ago, we used the music from "Amazing Grace", played on electronic keyboard, as the processional music for a Bridal entrance. The music started softly, building in volume and tone as she came down the isle. It was a truly grand entrance, fitting for this couple, and brought many to tears, including me!

So, Please don't think unkindly of someone just because their spiritual or religious interpretation or idea may not be the same as yours.
If we all wanted or liked the same things, it would be a boring world! that why we re creative!!

I think JB's post was a true question: What the heck is this, and how do we do it?? I don't know that they have ever seen one in Oregon. We are much more familiar with it coming from the hills of Pensylvania, W. Va, Tennessee, Kentucky and parts further south.

Again, this was not meant to offend you in any way. Just to be a gentle reminder that when we "chat" on here, it's as if we are speaking to many, many friends, all with very different backgrounds and different religions.

Best Regards,
Cheryl

No offense taken and I was speaking for me alone in my dislike of that particular piece. I have done some of those older set pieces as well. And of the old hymns - We used some of the contemporary and the traditional hymns during my Dad's funeral four years ago.

Granted, When you have no idea of what a customer is speaking of - it can make things a wee bit difficult. Before I left the last shop I was with, I did a more contemporary version of an old style sympathy design - The Vacant Chair.
I used a wooden ladder back chair with a cane seat, attached a couple cages to the chair, mounted a giant sized storybook ( it was for a young lady in her twenties who worked at a day care and was known for reading to the children ) and place flowers on the chair. The daycare called me raving how beautiful and appropiate the design was.

Having been in this industry for well over 24 years....I have seen my fair share of customers who are insistent and dead set on a certain style or a certain design.....no matter how hard you try, you just can't talk them out of a bad taste choice......You end up taking the money and making the design.

With JB's and Twila's design - one thing that stick out is what he said " Jesus called - Cowboy answered ". That could lead to a whole bunch of western theme adaptations to that design.

It's been an interresting day indeed...

:ghug:When my gal got off the phone and said questioning..."Jesus called and Cowboy answered." I asked her, "so where's the punch line?" She had to explain to me that according to the customer on the phone, that was a REAL arrangement. My first thoughts were to call Joe (cuz he knows everything). JB came up with asking all of you for help. Thanks for the quick responses. After speaking with Joe, I called Tina (Flowergirl) and got even more detailed help.

The funeral is taking place an hour out of town and during the weekend when we are closed. I had already done a consultation with one of my good customers and her family for this funeral. She plans to come and meet someone early at the store Sat. and take the pieces to the funeral herself. I find it really heartwarming to know how close we come to our customers. I didn't know how she felt about me, until she came in and threw her arms around me and hugged me. I also knew her sister from my past life as a Tupperware Manager--did tons of parties with her group out in that area (coast area). So it will be appropriate that Helen (my customer) will also take "Jesus called" with her to the funeral.

When I called the sender back (once I knew what I would be making), and quoted her a price, I had a chance to visit with her somewhat. Not wanting to change her mind in any way, but to give her an out...I tried to tactfully tell her that in Oregon we don't see arrangements like this. I asked if her family would understand the point that she was trying to express? She immediately said "of course they will...Weren't you touched by "Jesus called...Cowboy answered? That is what I always called Delbert!" I realized that if I said any more, I would offend her, and that was definately NOT what I wanted to do!!

I am actually looking forward to doing something different. You have heard me say before, that I WILL NOT make choices for my customers. Just like the carns and babies breath dilema that has been around for a long time. If my customers want 'em, I'm gonna sell 'em. I am glad that I have an outlet like FlowerChat to glean the information needed to find out how to do this arrangement. Of course, I'll have to put the "Twila" touches to it. Mostly cuz I have never seen what this really looks like...so that means, it can be anything I want it to be-right?

Big problem tho...once I decided to make what my customer wanted, I couldn't find the *%#@!#$ phone!!!! Spent couple hours looking for it. I finally found an old phone in Goodwill in the town that I live in (on my way home). Nothing in any of the stores in Corvallis. Ugh!!! :boggles: I need to charge for my time!!!

Anyway, hopefully this will look great. If so, I'll post a picture of what I came
up with. Please be kind tho. Unlike my brother, I have tender feelings :dearbob:...
Just kidding.

Hope you all have great orders and sales for the next few days.

Happy Turkey Day..If you are taking the weekend off....enjoy your weekend

Don't spend all your $$ green in one store on Black Friday

Hugs to all

Twila :ghug:

I have told my family I want the full monty, God's phone, Bleeding heart, Gates of Heaven and a Vacant Chair because I think the skill requirement to make these reflects the skill of the industry I will have worked in so maybe I should leave working notes on how to make them given I don't propose to pop my clogs for a long time.

Seriously though in the UK 'novelty' funeral tributes are becoming increasingly popular and as Cheryl says our job is to interpret the deceased's life on behalf of the mourners.

Maybe this is why Smithers Oasis UK have a huge range of shapes pre-cut for us to use ... everything from Bears and Bunny's, rugby balls to motorbikes, Hindu shapes as well as Stat of Davids, crosses etc and of course letters for name tributes (like Nana, Dad, Pop etc) which have absolutely gone through the roof in terms of sales.

There's samples of these styles/products on their website or I could upload some pics if anyone is interested.
Let me know

Unfortunately, As I have tried, - oly direct ordering through a UK wholesaler and paying huge freight charges can we in the states get these wonderful forms. I even spoke with Smithers at Symposium to try and get some of these forms and they people there said they did not have and most likely would not be setting a way for us to get the UK product here in the states.

Glad I could help Twila:hug:, I love being able to help and I love my Flowerchat Family:yourock:!! I have learned alot in the the past months being on here:thumbsup. I am truely greatful we all have somewhere we can go and ask questions and get great honest replies:blowkiss:!! Call me anytime!!

I would love to see these pictures! Please share

Thought you would like to see my interpretation of "Jesus Called". Since nobody has ever seen one of these around here, I figured that I could do whatever I wanted to. Actually I enjoyed doing it.

Jonathon wanted me to let everyone know that he lays no claim to being any good at editing capabilities. I think that he did a pretty good job. What do you think? Because of this, he won't put any of our work on our website or do a local one. I need some input on this or some added influence. Haven't been getting anywhere so far....

Thanks again for all your help and advice with figuring out what the heck this was supposed to be.

Happy Turkey Day to everyone!!!

:blowkiss:

I like the square wreath. it puts a more up-to-date flair on this arrangement.

You have to admit, it does make you smile.

I like the interpretation you put on this.

Very modern, very distinctive. If they wanted something unique, they got it! I love it.
