How are other Canadian shops handling the exchange on the loonie?

In store we keep the rate as posted by the Chamber. We wrote FTD and Teleflora about our concerns because we have had customers opt not to send flowers because of the outdated exchange rate.

That's my concern as well. The set rate of %35 is out of line with the reality of the strength of the dollar.

Big time, we've had enough customers cancel orders over exchange rates to be concerned. I sent a message to FTD (Frank & Caroline) and Teleflora (Lisa & Richard) both groups said they'd look into getting the rate changed. Frank wrote me back and said he'd be going to Chicago on Monday to talk about getting the rate changed before the next publication. I will give that man his due, he listens to what you say and acts on it.

Well, you are loonie but that's why we like you ;) Actually we have cartoon money.... the dollar coin is a loonie and the two dollar coin is a toonie... hence loonie toons. :)

We are now sitting at a bit over .80/dollar.

*sings* We're tiny, we're toony, we're all a little loonie? *straightens up* Okay, so I'm addicted to Loonie Toons cartoons, I can admit that addiction freely.

As for the dollar - I'm praying for all I'm worth that it can hold for a while - so I can save up cash for next years holiday. It doesn't sound so bad when you say X cents on the dollar but when you say X dollars per thousand, it makes you cry... a lot. At least that's how I felt when I bought my cash for Pennsic. If this rate holds, I'll be able to get good value.

The sooth sayers are sure it will not just hold, but rise even more :) I know there are pros and cons to a stronger Canadian dollar, but the selfish side of me agrees with you Audra... it's soooo much nicer at this rate than losing .45 and more per dollar to have a holiday. There just may be a holiday in my future for a change.

If the conversion rate the WS's make you use is so lousy, then why aren't all the Canadian-based OG's suffering the same fate as the 'regular' members since these orders are re-transmitted back to the US via FTD or TF? Those of you that use FTD to clear CC's, do they use the same conversion rate on them?

An order is placed in USD, converted to CDN value by the OG's Bank(?) (perhaps FTD?) at the prevailing rate - .80 on the Dollar - so now it's 1.20 CDN? Resent to US florist via the WS as how much? From the previous posts, it sounds like the US shop receives a price automatically converted to .78 ?

Special conversion rate for some members perhaps?

<<added: Found a currency converter and today's rate is 1.24 CAD for 1.00 USD. So if your shop sends an order for 124.00 CAD, it sound like the US florist would get $ 80.60 (65%) per FTD's current conversion rate as opposed to the actual conversion value of $100.00. Correct?>>

Real world:
Cdn $1 = USD $0.80

WS World:
Customer orders $100 USD arr. in Canada and pays $135 Cdn which equals $108 USD

How they get around this:
Some Canadian OGs have TWO clearing accounts. FTD has been known to give Canadian shops a separate clearing account for USD transactions. The shop asks the customer which currency they prefer to be billed in.

This is for shops that have a US website, and sell in US funds. Removes the need for double conversion. I'm sure they will provide to anyone who asks.

The one dollar coin we use here has an image of a Common Loon on one side and an image of a bat (oh no that is the Queen) (can't be sure as I don't have money on me at the moment) on the reverse side.

ROFLMAO - at least she still looks like the Queen on the Loonie and Toonie. Have you seen the new $20? She definitely doesn't look English anymore.

THAT'S what's on the other side! :)

Doug... I LOVE that and thank you for the belly laugh. Bat is accurate in my little world. :)

Audra, you're right. I'm not quite sure what she looks like on the new 20... I am soooo not a royalist!

Did I see on CBC the Quarter?

A Quarter with a "Red Poppy" to honor the WWII Vets in Canada and the color or as you folks say Colour? anyhoo the red color scrapes off using your fingernail.

Didn't that Looneys centerpiece metal pop out of that coin when it was stamped? Didn't I see folks throwing that coin againsts a wall showing the center to pop out?

I thought it was funny!

That would be the toonie Blue. My daughter was able to get a centre out of one but it took a whole lot of pounding. ;)

Got some red poppy quarters in change at Tim's this morning before I'd even heard of them. When you scrape off the red a silver poppy remains-symbolic maybe? Thought it was a great idea; I'm gonna put a few away (before the red's gone). Glad to see QEII still on the reverse.
A few of the early Toonies were defective and came apart but otherwise will take lots of abuse before coming apart.
You gotta love that Loonie; keeps turning up under the ice and in the nets of international hockey games.

Globe and Mail Update

The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled the world's first coloured circulation coin Thursday, a quarter that features a red poppy in homage to the 117,000 Canadians who have died serving the nation.

At a ceremony at the Minto Armory in Winnipeg, the mint and the Royal Canadian Legion officially launched the coin. It features a red coloured poppy embedded in the centre of a Maple Leaf over a banner that reads: "Remember / Souvenir." The flip side features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

"We owe our veterans a debt we can never repay and the Mint is to be congratulated for having the technical ingenuity to produce a coloured coin," Minister of National Revenue John McCallum said. "This will serve to remind all Canadians every day of the importance of supporting the Legion's Poppy and Remembrance Campaign."

Beginning Thursday, the new poppy coin will be available at Tim Hortons locations across Canada. The coins will also be available at financial institutions in the coming months.

"The Mint felt very strongly about dedicating the world's first coloured circulation coin to Canada's war veterans," said David Dingwall, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "The self sacrifice and courage symbolized by the poppy is universally understood by all Canadians and it also epitomizes Canada's pride of place in world history."

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

"The poppy is a hallowed symbol to our members and to all Canadians," said Mary Ann Burdett, dominion president of the Royal Canadian Legion. "As the guardian of the memory of lost comrades and friends, the Legion has a solemn responsibility to ensure that the poppy is always used in a dignified manner."
