I was telling my wife and daughter this evening (over dinner. . . .sushi. . .Erin's favorite place. . . . in celebration) that if something happened where all of a sudden we were not a match, I think I would have to go ahead and donate to someone else.
Being involved first hand, it has really impacted my heart that there are so many families suffering through this. Many have been on dialysis for years.
Fortunately awareness is growing and there have been many Donor chains started around the country. One person feels led to donate, then perhaps a family member or friend of the recipient donates to someone else and it goes on and on. I have read of one chain that is 10 donors long.
With the advances in donation surgery, you can be home in two days and back to work in two weeks max.
I would encourage anyone feeling the need to do this to check into it.
