Asking this question for a friend - someone who used to work for her has started a very similar business, and linked to her site. She has contacted this person and requested that the link be removed, but he refuses.

Does she have any recourse, or can anyone abritrarily link to any site?

Your help is appreciated, as always. This is a huge dilemma for her, and she's at her wits end.

thanks!

JB, I nearly splattered Diet Coke all over my monitor. Too funny.

I understand why your friend may not want this person linking to her, but does the link say something that damages her reputation? The link itself could actually help her do better in search results.

She could always add a 'welcome visitors from s-o-b.com. You've come to shop at the right place' in a graphic on her home page.

And no, she cannot take JB's advice when the unwanted link points to her home page.... unless she wants ALL her visitors seeing Ned Beatty as a beagle.

Great option for a frustrating situation. I think she's afraid that he will benefit from her web traffic, and he distinctly gives the impression that hers is his - in other words, he says "click HERE to visit my blah blah blah site", which is her website.

I'm telling her your idea - I think it will help. This person is a real dirtbag, and she does not want to be affilitated in any with him, even if he isn't saying anything derogatory toward her.

that would suit this situation perfectly - he's linking to her Home page. Will it work?

No it will only work on an interior page or like Cathy says - you don't want the whole world seeing that.

There are ways to serve a specific page based on where the referral comes but they are over my technogeek head.

The big boyz do it all the time.

By the way - another good trick is if you find one of you images elsewhere (directly linked to your site) you change the name of the image and in it's place you put something like this

http://www.inbloom.com/stuff/kitten.jpg

OR - you can use a redirect and redirect the link to something like this:

http://inbloom.com/stuff/monkeyjoke.wmv

Um Jon....

Jon, Jon, Jon.....

You have too much time on your hands my friend.

You know growing up, I heard stories that my Mom really didnt' give birth to my brother, instead, Dad brought him home from the war. Posts like these only go to prove that we really can't be related :dunno::pblush:

Shouldn't have unwrapped him!!:censor:

Anyone can link to any site. If your friend really doesn't like it, she can call her lawyer and get a cease & desist letter sent. If the linker is misrepresenting his relationship with your friend's business, she has a case.

Twila, this could be a somewhat duller place if it weren't for Bloomzie so I guess you'll have to bite the bullet and keep him around.... at least for our benefit :>
Rock on...............

Twila - LOL!

JB - I sure hope you have robots.txt blocking those pages from being spidered. Otherwise Google's image search might just show 'em for "Corvallis Florist". :tongue
Does that mean it's a bad thing that I just pointed 5 PR6 links at his testing page with the anchor text of "Corvallis Florist?"

Na ... wouldn't do that ... ;)
