And you don't have to rely on Press Releases for publicity this year, as I'll be pushing out details on MSS week through our social media channels. If you help get people to 'listen', I'll be trying to push names/cities of all of the participating florists.

We're thinking it'd be cool to try and get 'average Joe's' to do their own (unfunded) Make Someone Smile project, too.

But, what I"m trying to say is, please let me know if you ARE participating and I'll make it a point to share that info! :)
in our city we rely on the comminity florist ...we all help its not a big burdon for only one...It is suppost to be a joint efort.get a really big group together to help with the work and haave fun!

My lead designer is chairperson of the PennJersey Unit's participation in this year's campaign. This gives my son the unique opportunity to film the event for a documentary he's making for his HS class and for possible air on the school's local cable TV station. His angle: people doing good with flowers.

He's asking anyone in the FC community participating in Make Someone Smile week who would like to share their motives and insights, photos etc. to email ([email protected]) me for possible inclusion in this film.

Thanks!

Its his primary grade for his Communications Technology 3 class next year, so it will be a while in the making.

He got special permission from his teacher to start filming this summer, obviously because the main event will happen now and then not again until next summer. He'll be researching the history of the event during the school year and getting more interviews from florists who participated. Would you or someone else at Teleflora, be interested in giving him an
e-mail interview to include in his documentary?

Just want to reiterate my offer to name the shops who are participating in Make Someone Smile week via our social media presence. If you want me to give you a "shout-out" please let me know, either here or on FB or Twitter.

Thanks!! :D

We are still participating. Very poor interest in this program as far as the media coverage. Unless it's bad news, they don't seem interested. Today, our local paper tells us he'll see if he can swing by and can we send him a digital photo if he doesn't make it. Whatever.

At least those poor old people who are stuck indoors will get a great surprise. I can't wait until they get made and delivered! I think it will be a really fun day.

Why can't the request for press coverage come directly from Teleflora??? Seems as though that would carry more "weight"??? Maybe in the form of a press release???

We're delivering ours tomorrow. Don't know what to expect in coverage. The PR dept. at the hospital is handling it. Thank you for the offer to let others know. I'll let you know how it goes.

Closing my shop tomorrow to go make 200 mugs and finish the 100 picked up on Saturday and greened. As far as I know it will be just me and my two kids and my designer. We will make as long as our feet hold out.
A wholesaler graciously is letting us use his space as he is more central them me. We will deliver to the VA Hospital in Seattle and Ronald McDonald House at Childrens Hospital on Thursday.
We decided on Kalanchoes' for the VA Hospital so that they would get to enjoy them longer. At Childrens we will leave about 50 for them to put flowers in. It should be fun and it will help my 12 and 18 year old how to do things for the good of it!!

I took my son and his "crew" to film the PennJersey Unit last night. First, I'd like to thank all those who allowed themselves to be interviewed for my son's documentary. The kids were impressed by the dedication of these florists as well as by how much they enjoyed being together. What a welcoming group!

This morning we joined one shop owner as he delivered his pieces to Ronald McDonald House. The families there were truly grateful and deeply touched by this random act of kindness. Most had never heard of "Make Someone Smile Week", but expressed their thanks for the charity of Teleflora and its member shops.

We also visited the offices of the Dooley House, which specializes in care for (resident) children and adults (mostly outpatients) with AIDS. In his interview, one of the directors told my son that the smile container and flowers were symbolic of the hope and love the Dooley House tries to spread within the community and that they were very thankful to the florists who donated their time to make the arrangements.

The kids were deeply touched and humbled by the experience, as was I.

Jumpin crickets what a busy day!!! We delivered over 100 arrangements to a local nursing home. The residents just LOVED THEM!!! Our local wholesaler gave us to many daises so we wrapped bunches of daisies and delivered them randomly around to local businesses too.

A really fun day but boy what a lot of work!!!! Do you know how hard it is to get 120 arrangements into 2 Scions?????

Any others join in this week?

One of our designers participated with the Penn Jersey Unit and delivered hers to a local nursing home. We received a very nice email from the Community Relations Director thanking her for brightening up the residents day. They all were very appreciative. She delivers them in her logo'd shirt, hoping the staff and residents will remember our name.

Not sure doing it on our own would be worth the expense, but if you can arrange to do it a on a large scale as a group in is a really good opportunity.

We do donations to local nursing homes on our own after Xmas, or just before, with Poinsettias if we have a large qty of leftover. They are appreciative of that as well.

My local papers here two years ago wouldn't bother with it from a national corporation, they wanted local stories with local people and small local companies, was true with another member close by they tried and got shot down for any press...

We participated also and delivered 94 arrangements to our local nursing home yesterday. I got two phone calls from residents that had me in tears. Both said they had been feeling really depressed lately. The one woman told me that this was the first time anyone had sent her flowers. She loves the mug and plans to use it for her tea. I got a big hug from one of the care givers that helped me bring in the flowers on a cart. We had taken the first load over around 2:30 and when I delivered the remaining after closing the store at 5 , I was told that the residents were so tickled with their flowers and that someone would send these to them. Oh yeah, I'm planning to do it again next year. It was one of those moments that remind you that flowers do have a powerful effect on people. I have a little book that someone gave me that has quotes pertaining to flowers. One of my favorites is one by Henry Ward Beecher " Flowers are the sweetest things that God ever made and forgot to put a soul into"

Such a sweet post! Good for you!

We all tend to take flowers for granted.... being around them everyday. You forget that they really are a luxury to many people.

I got a phone call, too, for the very first time! (though we've participated 3 other years, I've never had a patient/resident phone). She was in the hospital for surgery and said the flowers really made her day. Her phone call really made my day, too!

Good you actually got partial credit as a participating shop. That's the way it should be and should have always been.

After sourcing the flowers (paying for about half of them myself) and having our staff make them up (the other volunteers kept cancelling out), I was told in no uncertain terms that our shop could not be ID'd in any way on the deliveries.

My calculations were that we contributed far more in the way of actual costs than TF, but got zero credit or goodwill benefit. That was the last year we participated in Make Someone Smile Week.
