Received an interesting email today. Not sure where it came from, if it is a scam or not but thought someone in that area may know if it is genuine?
Not that I'd travel to BC (although if the pay was good....LOL)
From Jane Soden:
Hello,

I'm working on "Making It Big" - a television series for Life Network in
Canada in its second season.
We're looking for up-and-coming floral designers who've been working in the
industry for a few years.
The show will be broadcast across Canada and possibly in the U.S as well.
Each episode will focus on a different dynamic career and three talented
up-and-comers who want to make it big in that profession.
Over the course of each episode one of them earns the career break of a
lifetime and the chance to be mentored by an icon in the field.

I've attached the floral designer casting call for you.
I'm hoping you may be able to pass the casting call along to up-and-comers
in the industry who have had some success already, or perhaps post the
casting call where many people in the industry can view it.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
We are looking for people from all across North America for the show.

Thank you,
Jane Soden

ATTENTION
FLORAL DESIGNERS

CAN YOU CREATE FLORAL ART THAT WILL HAVE TOP EVENT PLANNERS BUZZING?

Making It Big, a primetime television series seen across North America, is
looking for three talented, up-and-coming floral designers. All three young
professionals will be showcased in the Making It Big floristry episode but
only one will earn the career break of a lifetime.

Making It Big provides the thing money can¹t buy: access. For example, the
winner of the Entertainment Reporting episode flew to L.A. for meetings with
Extra host Dayna Devon, executives at Dick Clark Productions and a top
William Morris agent. The Fashion Design winner flew to New York where his
work was displayed in the window of Saks Fifth Avenue¹s flagship store.
Meetings were also booked with the chain¹s fashion director, its buyers and
New York designer Cynthia Steffe.

Will it be you in the floristry episode?

To qualify you must have:

ü Professional experience & a portfolio of your best work

ü The talent & drive to make your mark in floral design

ü The desire to tell your story on television

ü The ability to cross the Canada/United States and your residence in
North America

I say we send Cathy in undercover, and see what happens :)

Thanks for the thought, but the call is for 'up and coming' not 'still at it after all these years'. ;)

We received that message yesterday and I have a couple designers to recommend as candidates. Will let you know if anything develops.
That's why I said "undercover." Would make for some great TV, I'm sure.

Or are you set to be the mentor that the winner gets to tag along with?

Ryan

Cathy, I thought the same thing. Being in the business for 31 years doesn't count for me...although you could say "new beginnings" after my Maine Masters course :)
I do have someone to recommend also, think I'll forward the email to her (as she vacations in Costa Rica)
Maybe we could assume the role of "assistant"?

Making It Big ......

is a legit show. I catch it every once in awhile when the profession they feature catches my interest.

The "Making It Big" episode, referenced above, featuring floral designers will air on Moday, October 9 at 8 p.m. on Life Network in Canada.

I'm hoping someone will volunteer to record it and send it to me (will provide our FedEx number). Depending on how it looks, I'll fill you in on our store's participation in the show.

It's not scheduled to air in the US for at least a few months.

Corey Lonsert from Bellefontaine, OH will be one of the featured "Up and Coming" designers on the show that airs October 9th in Canada. He said the filming was a blast!

Oh come on now CHR...it will be on youTube within 18 hours of airing!

Anyone want to take the over/under on that?

It's on now...

The unreality of reality t.v is that events like this are not planned in two hours.

I have an emotional favourite.

To be honest, I was bored part way through the episode. I would have preferred seeing some of the ground work laid by each contestant before the actual test.

Generally, I suppose because it's my area of interest, I found cramming so much into an hour really annoying. Would I watch it again... probably not.

On a positive note... nice interview Cathy. :)

can you gie us more details about how the test went? who won? what were the criteria, etc...?

Oh sorry.... it didn't occur to me that you folks didn't see it.

They had two hours to do the decor for table, room, individual gifts for 6 female guests and a birthday gift for a man.

They had 3 helpers and they had to choose linens, flatware, tableware etc.

There were 3 judges and in my opinion and obsequious host. ;)

Criteria seemed to be based on time management, management of staff, communication, eye for detail, and of course design.

There was nothing to show the process by which the contestants came to their vision.

As for the contestants... we had a skater girl who was very creative and talented but no real people skills.

We had a recovering drug addict who was an incredibly talented artist but had poor communication skills.

We had a young man who lives and breathes his craft... he won.
