There is a big debate right now about Miss California's response on Gay Marriage during Sunday night's Miss USA pagent. A lot of blogging is coming from one of the judges - Perez Hilton who is openly gay. I'm not sure if you saw the Today show this morning but I was really shocked on how Perez handled himself towards Miss California. He basicially said Miss USA should comply to the norm and should be neutral with no opinion on issues in the US. I must say, I am completely shocked. Last I checked we were a country that entitles us to Freedom of Speech and Religion and everyone is allowed an opinion.

Hilton's direct comment was, "I would have appreciated it had she left her politices and her religion out, because Miss USA represents America." Interest quote. Last I checked, America also respresents Freedom of Choice, Speech and Religion. Hilton must have a new definition of America.

An interesting fact to know is during the presidental election, Obama made the same statement about same sex marriage in that he believed a marriage is between a man and woman. Obama was elected president. Miss California says the same thing and is now in a topic of debate.

Below is a link to the today show interview.

I'm curious to learn what everyone is thinking about this recent issue. I know this might be a touchy subject for some but I'm just curious to see how those from different areas of the US react to this issue. I am applauding Miss California. I applauding her for not what she said during the pagent but for standing up and using her Freedom of Speech and staying true to herself even though it cost her the crown.

ah, pageants... you gotta say what the judges wanna hear....
Tis politics at it's best. And no matter what the age of the contestants - those that provide what the judges believe is right and "perfect" will win everytime.

At least this time, the finalists could speak what was considered an answer, Ms California spoke her mind (although she should have left "My Country" out of it) and her belief.
Personally I think Perez was a bit harsh and actually nasty for what he's said in his blogs. I think Mr. Trump should consider that his judges be non-controversial also. Hilton was a wrong choice as a judge IMHO

So sad to say but FREE no longer means Free in this country. It has become all about saying what you think the minority wants to hear or rather who it is that is "judging" you in whatever situation one finds themself in.

Perez is just one of the few, following the leaders who are running our country.

It is very sad when we can't state our beliefs out load with out someone becoming offended and trashing us.

Joan

Boy isn't that a sad thought that when you use "free" it no longer reflects our country. Everything has become so political. A person can't have an opinion anymore unless it is voiced in a politically correct tone.

Ths is my take. California voted TWICE against gay marriage...to upold marriage as a union between a man and a woman. People that are out there in the media saying how unexpected it was for her to say that, is just ignorant. Ca voters voiced their wants and it's being overturned yet again! (since they overturned it the first time). So I say, What is the point in voting when the minority will just scream so loud that they get their way??!!

She answered honestly and for it to be held against her is wrong...she was punished for her view plain and simple.

I totally agree she should have the right to speak her mind...why did they have political questions and not expect political answers,it should not have anything to do with either, its a beauty pagent....some say she losts because he canned her for her veiws...I am not in anyway against same sex marriage, but I do beleive a marriage is defined as a union of man and woman...but they should have the right to marry if thats what they want....

interesting that an openly gay man thinks the ideal representative of female america should conform her public opinions to suit public sentiment.

Perez Hilton, based on this topic & his conduct pertaining to it, is completely hypocritical. He made an ass of himself.

Wouldn't it be flippin fabulous if the Miss USA Pageant idealized a woman who COULD speak her mind, support her opinions & was beautiful to boot?

I think the Miss California debate has opened up a whole new can of worms for Americans. Perhaps the people can finally take ownership in their beliefs and start taking value in our Freedoms. (Choice, Religion, Speech) I can only hope that this debate is going change focus on our Freedoms and not her opinion on gay marriage. A news article came out today that says Miss California has received more hits on the web than the actual winner of the Miss USA.

I applaud Miss CA for not backing down on her beliefs because of a loaded question that a Hollywood gossip monger asked. I'm trying to figure out what qualified him to be judge in the first place. He makes his living being controversial and this display is nothing new. Interesting that Obama and the Clinton's both feel the way she does. I don't hear him calling them a b----.

I wonder if a Judge who was against gay marriage asked a girl her opinion and she said she was for gay marriage and was marked down because of it, how that would play out. Every gay-rights movement would be on the march. Freedom of speech works both ways and just because a person doesn't believe the way you believe doesn't make it right or wrong.

I am glad she was honest. It was a question that answered either way, she would of gotten flack for it. Too bad the other girls weren't asked loaded question.

Sometimes I ask a question when I interview a possible employee that is loaded. I don't judge them by their answer, but how they answer it. Honesty, to me, is more important than weather you believe in gay marriage, the Iraq war, abortion, etc...

In the end, I think that question or other loaded questions should of been distributed across the board to all the girls or none of them.

Interesting that Obama and the Clinton's both feel the way she does. I don't hear him calling them a b----.

Every time I hear this, I think, Brilliant!

The last time I heard this was Sean Penn was endorsing Obama one day and then the next day making fun of those who supported anit-gay marriage.

I don't watch pagents... they annoy the bejesus out of me.

Miss California certainly is entitled to her opinion... that's why service men and women have lost their lives... to guarantee that right.

They also lost their lives for those who don't agree with Miss California (I'm one of those).

I'm glad I live in Canada where my brother and his partner can be married if they choose.

She was free to say what she wanted. good for her for standing up for what she believes.

He was free to say what he wanted.
he's kinda stupid......I'm free to say that.

No one should conform to anything they don't believe in.

I have zero problem with same sex marriage.

live and let live, just don't screw with me.
maybe I should make that my new signature quote.

There wasn't a winning answer to that question. She was going to get bashed any way she answered, to bad. We all have the right to live life as we see it best for one's own self. To many blasted people get their panties in their crack cause something didn't go their way! Just stomp your foot and take your ball and go home. The young lady was just that a lady, IMHO
This judge is is not showing very good self control of emotions. As V said blood has been spilled to give every one the choice.

Okay, this really blows my mind.......this is a google report stating that many people who supported Ms. CA before and during the pageant are having difficulties....with her answer......
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,517277,00.html

I personally now more than ever have given up on watching any or donating to or supporting in any way.......any child age 3 or up to mid 20 who think this is a good way of "making scholarship money"....... give me a break.........

Miss CA is coming out the winner, she's a hot topic, while there is not that much on the real winner. Being an American means having the freedom to speak, even if it's politically incorrect. Isn't it ironic that the judge can't accept an answer for what it is, her personal opinion. He should not be furious that her opinion is different from his.
Way to go Miss CA!

OK, I just have to jump in here. I am a former Mrs. Nebraska, 2005. I know, I know. I had to say it. Just as in our business, there are good pageants and bad pageants. But, having been invovled in the Miss America and Mrs. America systems for years, I can tell you that pageants for young women are a good thing. They teach women confidence...because you have to have it to command a stage...and how to articulate her opinions, just as Miss California did. Kiddie pageants, well let's just say that I choose not to be involved in them.

Now to Miss California's answer...loaded question, and while it might be fun in today's reality tv environment to watch a contestant squirm, I don't believe such an emotionally charged question should have been asked on stage. It is really one of the most stressful situations you can be in with millions of eyes on you as you try to not sound like a dolt. I applaud her for stating her opinion, and judges should be told that there are no right an wrong answers to the questions you ask...we are looking for someone who can articulate herself well in any environment. You are interviewing for a job, and you have to be able to talk about any topic to 2 year olds to little old ladies. In hindsight, she could have been a little more diplomatic, which might have avoided the controversy...I did NOT say PC...I said diplomatic. Just like we would have loved to see our prez tell Chavez to his face that he is a nut job, it wouldn't have been appropriate to do.

So, she could have said, "One of the great things about our country is that each state has its own right to govern themselves so states that want gay marraige can have it, and those that don't, don't have to have that law. I personally believe in the traditional definition of marraige between a man and a woman, but respect those who would like some sort of legal partnership to protect their rights to be the primary person in their lives such as the case when one is hospitalized and wants the other to be able to visit them in the hospital."

Sorry it is such a long answer...
