I have a big wedding coming up July 11, bride wanted rannuccus in hot or raspberry pink. I discussed it with the wholesalers months ago and then again last month. Monday I go to place my order and he tells me that he is having a hard time getting them.

can someone suggest where I could get them or an alternative flower that would be similar in shape, color, beauty, size that would run around the same price?

I need about 100 stems.

Thanks, Joan

I've never tried it but...
At a design show years ago, the guest designer showed us how to take a full bodied sweetheart rose, and cut the petals abut 1/2 inch from the sepal...it did look like a runnunculus at the time, but I don't know how long it lasted, or if a scar showed up the next day...might be worth a try? If it works, let me know. Seems everybody wants runnunculus these days.

Check these out:

www.flowersgrowers.com and www.fiftyflowers.com

Don't know anything about them, but just looked them up.

150 stems 165.00 I think it said.

Also give FlowerBuyer a call, it said they are avail in diff colors, don't know about your hot pink.

our wholesaler has them listed as arriving 6/28 in pink & yellow from Esmerelsa Farms - Delaware Valley Wholesale Florist. Maybe they could speical order, or tell your wholesaler to try Esmerelda.

We have beautiuful California tulips - white doubles - for a bridal bouquet tomorrow. I subbed roses in the quote, which she really didn't want, so I was happy to see the tulips on inventory this week. I think rannys this time of year is a similar story - possible, but chance-y.

Hope they have them for you!

I had heard the same thing.. I have cut the petal of full size roses straight across about.. little less half way down before they open and let them set out to open.. (Experiementing) and It does not scar or brown them (I cut with a very sharp knife) and low and behold it did look a lot like a runnunculus.. and it lasted normal time for a rose.. ?? Maybe order them now and see how it works for you Joan.

Joan I have a Jul 10 bride with the same thing, she wants ranunculus (or peony, ha)

A few months ago it was "no problem" from the wholesaler but then a couple weeks ago when I tried to order it was like "well of course we can't get them now" or actually she told me they can get them from Holland but that some entity (Dept. of Agriculture?) may hold them to make sure they're ok (I don't remember exactly why, this was a few weeks ago) and they don't store them properly and they'll probably get damaged. To me that is as good as saying you can't get them at all. REALLY effin annoying. This is information I could have used 3 months ago!!!

I've had NO luck and finally talked her into garden roses as a sub but said I'd keep trying to find her flowers. May try the rose-cutting trick with a rose tomorrow just to see how it looks....

Peonies are on the inventory list for NewJune.com from Holland, quite a few varieties.

My main wholesaler told me last week that ranunculus and sweet pea were not looking good at all. Must be weather related. The challenges of working with Mother Nature!!!

We bought these week before last. Tiny.

I've seen the rose cutting trick, looks the same to me. It's worth a try, and you're more likely get the exact color you need.

I received this via email from Mayesh on 6/12:

The Mayesh Ranuncula Program The Mayesh Ranuncula Program

As you are aware, the Marketing and Purchasing departments of Mayesh resolved to produce some ranunculas this year. We had projected to have 40 boxes per week.
In so far as our research was correct; that there would be a reasonable demand for these flowers we are very pleased; however actual production has fallen well short of our projections, and we are running at about half what we expected.
Lately we are getting requests from various locations for these flowers and we are doing our best to fulfill all orders.
However, we also have several prior orders in the pipeline. To be fair we are filling orders as they come in: first received, first confirmed; first fulfilled.
So, if you need ranunculas, please order with as much notice as possible.

The technical reasons for the low production are elusive but may be briefly summarized thus:

  • Extremely cold weather that is persistent, leading to diminished luminosity and lower productivity for all flowers.
  • Possible mis-application of fertilizers and nutrients leading to low EC and imbalance of N-P-K.
  • Bulbs may not be as productive as in years past, due to lower yields in the bulbs growing cycle.
  • Murphy’s Law

As part of the new product development team, I offer my apologies, and please understand that we are trying to resolve the issues as fast as we can.

I have had luck with newjune.com before. Had a special request a few years back for hot pink peonies. Ordered from June and local. Local came in clearly purple, june's were hot pink. (after I was told there really isn't a true hot pink peony) Also got nice dyed rainbow color roses for a local event. Beautiful!
They are also very nice to deal with.

What about David Austin roses? They're more expensive, but you need less to fill the space and they have that ranunculus "look" to them.

I see them online at dvflora.com. DVWF has them coming in Sun 6/28 to Sewell, NJ. Item # 34003. They just say PINK, but the picture looks hot pink. Not sure how many are available. The grower is Esmeralda.

Oops, just realized you need for 7/11. Well... that's only one week later.
