I wonder since I have only been in business for 5 years. What where the miniums say back in the 80's?
I remember the days of $15.00 min for a wire out...not that long ago...back in the 1970's...

But alas, the dollar don't go as far as it used to ;)

Order Pirates

At the SAF Convention last week, I heard a term that was new to me.

I LOVED it.

There was a panel discussion about making business adjustments in the current challenging economy. Bill Gouldin, of Strange's Florist in Richmond VA was on an industry panel for a program. He's a floral SAGE in my opinion.:grovel:

Instead of calling them Order Gatherers, Bill refers to them as Order Pirates. How could you be more accurate!?!

That's my new term now, too. Order Pirates.

Order Gatherers is TOO KIND!

Is this the part where we tell Bloomzie to walk the plank?

What about a dozen roses or funeral arrangements. Seems to be that prices where higher back then but I am not sure.

I recall having a minimum of $20.00 back in the early 80's. I think there were some shops that were codified for as low as $10.00.

We priced 1 dozen "extra fancy" roses at $35.00. The arrival of the South American rose changed everything.

Wow I didn't know.

Well what the heck is wrong with the Wire Service? I know things have become more nickle and dime or should I say dollar and dollar.

Did this service ever have a large profatable side to it? Or was it all smoke and mirrors since most of you had so much more walkin business or should I say more local business that it was never really considered a problem?

I know the brand was worth something at one time and could of contributed to increase sales but was the business side of sending and recieving worth it? I am sure one of you has access to those old statements.

Just a brief history on wire orders.....back in the days before the sending only florist...Everyone was kind of equal....Of course some shops always sent more than recieved but it was more of a service than anything else...The membership fees were reasonable...Our delivery fees were either free or a few dollars and it was taken right out of the flowers because the impact was not so bad and wire fees were usually under 5 bucks...Flower minimums were also lower like 20 -25 bucks...Your incoming was occassional and out going usually out numbered the incoming...but florists being the non-money and number oriented people that they are always thought that paying the service was not making money and started dropping from the services because they had 5 of them to get more incomings...Of course the smarter business people of the world figured out that the money was on the sending side and the WS were looking for a way to make their florists happy and so the sending only florist was born...Then the ws saw how much money the sfo's were making and said hey we can do the same thing...Voila, Florists were happy, WS were happy SFO were happy....Then the internet came about and florists now had a new game to play and were about 5 years too late...The SFO started playing that game immediately and created the imbalance of orders thet we see today...All of a sudden we would be getting 10-15 orders a day from the same shops and losing our own local stuff...but florists wouldn't realize it until about 5 years out....

The SFO had almost a 10 year gain on florists before we even figured out what seo even was and managed to corner the market on internet flower orders...Now that we are kind of caught up(kind of being the operative word) the game changes so quickly that we all can't keep up and it is a vicious cycle...

This is my take on the history, anyone else care to add what I may have left out or add in anything that I may have wrong have at it...This is my story and I am sticking to it...
