I know this may sound silly for many here, but I am asking for prayers for my daughter's cat and her strength.

My daughter woke up in the night to her cat attacking a bat. She killed the bat, bagged it and took it to the health dept.

They are testing the bat for rabies.

She is 19 and lives on her own. This cat is her first very own pet, a huge part of her world and aids dearly in her emotional stability.

She let her cats rabies shot lapse by 5 months.

If the bat is found to have rabies, the cat will be taken and quarantined for 6 months and treatments started. This is done at the owners expense. They have not told us how expensive it is, only that they recommend it be euthanize.

Please pray that this bat is not rabid and if it is rabid that she will have the strength to get through it, as it will surely be devastating.

Thank you, Joan

Joan, I'm sure the bat wasn't rabid and if the wonderful kitties shots are up to date all will be well.

My boys loved bat sport back in the day.

You all have my positive thoughts for no worries for Ariel or kitty. :)

And by the way, it's not remotely silly.

Thank you!

The cats rabies shot is not up to date,(read above) that is why they told her they will have to take it. She has been crying for 2 days waiting to hear. I keep telling her to stop reading about it dwelling on it, and sweating it. She is beside herself this is what worries me.

Joan, I'll pray for kitty and your daughter to get through this ordeal. Keep in mind that the bat probably wasn't rabid and kitty's rabies shot may still be effective. They're required to isolate the cat as a precaution, just in case. I just feel so bad for Ariel.

Oh, how awful, it's not silly at all!

I saw a rabid bat once in the middle of the day, so hopefully your daughter's cat just caught a healthy bat that came out at night as they normally do.

How long until you know? Please keep us posted. I hope everything turns out OK.

Hey Joan,

I have read articles over the past few years suggesting that vets tend to over-prescribe vaccinations. The argument was that many annual shots could be given every two years because they were effective for much more than one.

I don't know if this applies to rabies but I hope that one way or another your daughters cat is okay. I remember your story about how sweet she was to you during the last big holiday and she deserves some good luck.

Not silly - we love our animal babies too! I cried, screamed and flopped in the street the day my doggie Libbie was run over... My husband could not get me up and out of the middle of the street -

Love is not just for people... Praying for your daughter, kitty and Mr. Bat..

Good Kitty - BTW attacking the bat and all!

Joan....as long as your daughter is clear of ANY possible cross-contamination, then worry about her!!
Remember, it WAS the cat that "started" all this...somehow, that probably WON'T comfort you, BUT, I'm on the side of YOUR BABY being ok!!

Bat likely not to have rabies. Get cat back asap. I hope everything works out, I think it will. Personally, I don't completely trust all vets. They need to get the tests done and give back your cat. The last time I took my cat Simon in to the vet (he had a lump under his front leg) They gave him some antibiotics and told me he might have cancer.Well 1 day later the lump sort of erupted. It was just an infected wound. Why the Vet had to blow everything out of proportion and freak me out is beyond me.

I was thinking about your dilemma, and now I wonder about the lapsed time for the rabies shot, and how true that may be. Here's why. I brought my 3 pets to a rabies clinic recently. Had to show them their last rabies certificates. I brought the wrong cert. for one cat, so they said the shot was only good for 1 year fpr that cat instead of 3 years for the other 2 pets.

Then, I went to another room, and the vet gave all three animals the shot, without even looking at the new certificates I got at the registration area.

So, why is the shot good for 3 years for the other two pets, and only good for 1 year for the other one? Fishy...!!!!!!!!

I don't trust vets and other so called "animal professionals" either. If you get bad news back, and I pray you don't, please get other opinions before acting.

Prayers for all. God hears all sincere prayers, and answers as He decides. I've never read where the Bible said not to pray for cats, or any creature.

I love our vet and believe that they are good caring people but, like most of us, they are in business to make a living.

The argument with regards to vaccinations is that - at the direction of our vets - we vaccinate our pets far more frequently than we vaccinate our own children!

The difference is that for the most part vets are not under the scrutiny of insurance companies who decide what they are prepared to pay for. Instead they are dealing with caring pet owners who are vulnerable to any claim that a shot is in the best interests of the animal.

It's just like a florist - a guy probably only has to buy flowers on Valentines and his anniversary but you encourage him to do it more often!

But anyway - I really just wanted to give Joan and her daughter something else to cling to. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

sending prayers.............. Dave

thoughts from NJ for strenght & a positive outcome.

Sorry Joan , I have been away, and just read this, I am sorry to hear this, but on the bright side of this, That darn Cat of mine likes to catch them as well, Since I live by the water the darn things are every where, So the first time I did the same took the bat and the cat to the vet, well I had only had that cat for like a week, no I had not taken him to a vet yet, his appoinment was for the following week, So the vet told us it was normal for cats to do this, and it was a brown bat, they eat bugs, So the cat or none of us had to do the rabies things, also as others stated sometimes vets get a little aniox to do this, because the don't know the answer, The Vet that we take that cat to, when I saw your post "If the cat had rabies you would know within 24 hours, also get a second opion if needed" But most likely the cat will be fine, because of the imune defense of the vacine already in place" Even if the cat was behind on the shots,
