Even though there have been one or two items that I have dis-agreed with......i love his postings and draw a lot of great and timely business knowledge from them.

I wonder if you would have been so amused if he was attributing the message to you instead of the admins?

Ryan

Same here. :(

Probably.....but I have a pretty good sense of humor.:ssmoke

It's going to be a blow to himself. He needs people who challenge his ideas and opinions so that he can polish his own. That's the whole point of joining a forum like this one.

Dreaming Goldie? RC needs people up in here? Gotta drop the ::BS flag on that one. However, I would agree that this board needs him.

Has anyone PMed him or anything? He should know he's missed and we're concerned.

I think he's achieved the desired result in the playground.

I do like those swings....but nothing beats slippin down the slippery slide:bangles:

Sorry I couldn't help myself....I wonder why we all just can't get along? Maybe thats a question we have been asking ourselves since the beginning of time perhaps???

Randy is one of the most competent florists I know. I have no idea what's up, but I would hope that he'll be back....

Yes, we do need him here, and I doubt that he needs any of us. Some of his ideas may seem strange at first but the more you read what he says, the more you realize that he's a whiz at things floral related.

Not that quick. :)

Any business owner is running a risk of becoming a naked king. We (I mean, not us you and me, but also Randy) all have this risk. That's why having an argumentive wife is ultimately a good thing.

However, I would agree that this board needs him.

This board needs everyone, not just him.

C'mon goldie, I think you're getting way to analytical on JB's comment. I think you know the gist of what bloomzie was trying to say.

The importance of a community's collective parts are extremely important, it couldn't function without them, but not all parts carry equal weight. Some are live weight, some are dead weight. RC was one that commanded attention, remember the EF Hutton commercial? "When EF Hutton Speaks, people listen"?

Whether he left or not is speculative, but if he did, there's no doubt that it will be a big blow to all of those, including myself, that were leeching off his ideas and information that he shared. However, I do believe you really have to read between the lines with the info he chose to share. I don't think he was willing to share all his secrets, just some ingredients. I did try to take from it would I could.

However, as with any strong community, FC will move on.

btw, what a bizarre so-called farewell. Very unorthodox, kinda says something don't it?

Well if it's true he got nothing out of this and only gave, why stay?
Anyone who chooses to leave, I wish them well. It's the nature of the beast (messageboards), I've seen it other places and that's just how it goes.

I agree with Springcity. If he has chosen to leave (and it looks that way) I wish him all the luck in the world.

He will be missed greatly that is for sure.

People evolve, change, move on that is the way of life.

It is apparent that a lot of people here respect RC very much (myself included) and if he has chosen to leave us or take a break whichever the case may be he deserves our respect in his decision.

And on that note:

RC you :headbang: and I wish you all the luck in your career and in your life.

I think I'll drop 2 ::BSon that last sentence.

Darrel said it very well...

And on the arugmentative wife please help me see that cuz buddy I got one.

I agree w/goldfish. The minute you think you know everything, you're screwed. Not saying RC thinks that, just a general statement. Bloomz, you know about "bleeding deacons" right?

edited to bold part of it, just so everyone's clear on what I said.

And the bad thing about putting people on pedestals is eventually they fall off.

Randy knows that he does not know everything. I know that he knows more than most people around here, especially me.

I agree that not all parts carry equal weights. But the question is do we really know which ideas and opinions carry weights? How do we know it? Look at the name of the poster?

I think that people like JB put too much "weight" on who the speaker is, rather than what s/he is saying.

I'm not saying credentials do not count. In fact they do count, but only to the extent that credentials are imperfect indications of the speaker's qualities.

Yet a danger of relying too much on a speaker's credentials is that people stop thinking themselves. They may feel like they are thinking, but actually not. They may hesitate to go against the authoritative voice and not critically evaluates what s/he said, while simply dismiss an idea just because it came from someone who doesn't count.

And when people stop thinking, they become vulnerable to all sorts of trap that independent thinking would have prevented.

You are blessed. It's analogous to the benefits of single-party dictatorship vs multi-party democracy. Democracy is inefficient and noisy, but usually promises more progress than the dictatorship does.

Likewise, you would be better off if you had people who challenge your ideas.

Unfortunately, when you become a big boss, most people in your company stop saying what they really think about your ideas. Joining a forum like FC mitigates that problem. RC needs this forum.

Absolutely. Definitely.

As had been said many, many times here, 'florists' are not monolithic. Our commonality is the sale of flowers, but how, how much, how efficiently, where, when and to whom we sell encompasses a huge range of answers.

Sales range from under $100K annually to more than $10m - with each member bringing his/her range of experience to each discussion.

Where this board shines for me is in keeping up on news that effects us all, in sharing and discussing information that helps improve marketing, selling (in store and online) and ultimately helps increase profits.

When we help address issues (where the majority agrees) and when we help promote our business channel and each other, our concerted efforts can and have made a difference.

The personal stuff is draining and discouraging and takes our eyes off the ball.

Not a single admin performed the alleged act that began this thread. To accuse us collectively (or even inidividually) was personal.

goldfish, I think it was quite obvious the value of Randy's posts. Credentials or no credentials, there's no way to sugar coat it, he will be missed by most of us.

However, after some thought, I think I understand how your thought process for this particular situation was founded. I believe you are basing his departure only on his comments on the "new member" thread. I do agree with you, in that even someone like Bill Gates, needs people (credentials or no credentials) to bounce ideas off of or he risks becoming complacent. It would be foolish to always go with the ideas of the "old boys club". Fresh minds are very important to stay ahead of the game.

With that said, I think Randy's comments in that thread only play a part in his departure. I'm not saying that his departure was justified or even smart, but sometimes it's just time to step away.

The problem is, at least in the last few months, aside from a contest ethics debate, did anyone really challenge RC on a floral issue? It seems your theory may have carried over from his company into FC as well.

edit: it did appear he experimented with monoflorals
