Moral Values

Goldfish: perhaps you should consider one thought:
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I think that this is what we are all saying..........deep down.......

Several years ago, I sold greeting cards & caught 2 teenagers stealing cards from our store. Their reason for it was "to see if they could get away with it" They did not feel that it was wrong, or stealing...just as you dont'. Did I press charges?? You bet? How could I...the parents asked? Because steeling is wrong, I replied. The legal system does not place a $$ value on the goods that are stolen. It does, however, take that into account as the punishment is set!

Moral to this story....they have not stolen again, and 1 girl went on to get a recommendation from me to get a college scholarship.

There is no "downside" to being honest...............

When did this become a discussion on religion?

Doing the right thing has nothing to do with going to church (I don't, by the way). It has everything to to with being respectful of yourself and others.

Stealing from the big company (which is made up of many many many "little" people), or stealing directly from the "little" people is wrong. So by all means live your life the way you choose... hopefully it doesn't come back to bite you on the as s.

Well, this discussion has made me pay more attention to the speed limit (and a few other things). My mom has a favorite saying, "Don't look for dirt at someone else's door until you have swept your own clean."

when you get caught as many times as I did....."some higher authority" HAD to be watching me!!

If we had the 11th commandment that says "Thou shall not speed" (just an example) but not the 8th, would we then be more harsh on someone driving a car 1 mph over the limit, than someone who stole a million bucks? It sounds ridiculous, but could be.

See my thing is those commandments are not RANKED according to severity of thou shall not. They are all the same. [I have this arguement with other friends also, so nothing new with my thinking]

Now you don't even question that stealing is not just illegal but immoral. Why don't we feel that way, when we see people speeding, which by the way is causing a lot of deaths? What is the rational here?

Some of us do feel that way about speeding and that is why I try to use my cruise control. (not only that but I am cheap when it comes to filling the gas tank - I don't subscribe to the NASCAR theory of driving) :)

As I said before, I do wrong-doings every single day. No question. I have given up a long time ago that it is impossible to be "right" in every situation. Because everything I do, if you think carefully, can be argued morally dubious, I have decided that the best way is to cherry-pick "less badder" behaviors and try to avoid "more badder" ones.

I do wrong doing everyday also. No one is perfect especially ME - there is no way I will ever be perfect walking this earth. But back to those 10. Stealing is stealing, lying is lying, murder is murder - It's like being pregnant you either are or you aren't. Those are just the precepts I try to live by - everyone has a choice.
Some of us religious types are not out there trying to push our "brand" of religion down anyones throat. (I do question those that do? Christian, Muslim whomever)

I want to be that "religious" (Christian) person that people will know by my actions and deeds that perhaps the way I live my life may be a way worth living.

blessing and Merry Christmas.

So if I order glass vases from you and instead of getting 2 to a carton, I get 3and you only charge me for the 2...then how would you feel if I kept them, never told you that your folks were mispacking and placed another order knowing that the same mistake would occur, how would you feel? No spin Gold...it's stealing plain and simple...end of story..

Here's a good question - is it illegal?

We all pretty much agree it is morally wrong.

But is it illegal?

I go with morally wrong being more important however

opinions vary...
