Hey Joe

Do you have children in the business? If you do would you pass on the company to them or tell them to be civil engineers?

I have four kids, the oldest just got accepted into the Horticulture School at the Universtiy of Illinois. His emphasis is Landscape Design

If he likes it he will probably switch to the Landscape Architecture program which is now in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It used to be in the College of Agriculture.

My two middle kids want the business, however, if they both want it, that means I have to get a whole lot larger. Currently there are 3-4 flower shops that want me to buy them out. I am not sure that is the best way to proceed. Expanding the greenhouse side is another alterntive, but I don't think I want to be doing that right now.

My fourth kid wants to be a veteranian (phonetically accurate as she pronounces the word). she is 8.

Joe, amazing history and amazing pictures.

Be sure to post the article.

It sounds like you are not pushing the business on your kids, but it's there if they want it, that is wonderful, the right thing, that is what I am going to do.

Wonderfully fascinating stuff, Joe! What a honor to have you share with us!:yourock::yourock:

That's something I think about. Everyone says my 4 year old Maddie will someday be on Broadway. She is well known by the DC events crowd, and she knows how to work it! She loves flowers. She loves the party scene. I just worry wether I should be molding and guiding her to the business or shielding her from it.

My 2 year old Tessa, well I could just eat her up! Nothing cuter that a 2 year old toehead girl.

Great pictures!

I have never pushed any of my kids towards any career path.

I think they see what I do and they like what they see.

and they probably ignore my grumpy moods with the business.

I forgot, Michael, kid 1, will also look at the Architecture program as well.

Actually, he would make a great lawyer. He loves to debate. Where he gets that trait I will never know.

You grumpy and a debater? Good for you. Sounds like some bright kids there Joe.

I grew up in a orange farming family. My Dad also was a Electrical Contractor for CalTrans. I went to Cal Poly to study ag, but ended up being influenced by an amazing floral instructor. My Dad tried to steer me away from my path as a florist, and take something safe and secure. I look at my brother how he chose to stay around the farm and became a county sheriff starting at age 22. He retired at age 46 with a good pension. My sisters went into Nursing, good retirements in the near future. One is a Physician's Assistant earning $85 per hour.

Why don't we listen to our father's? I'm just glad that fathers support us no matter where we go. I wouldn't be where I am without him.
