I was called in part of yesterday and this morning to assist a small shop that I occasinally freelance with in order to help with some specialty sympathy design work.

The decedent was such a huge fan of the deceased Nascar racer Dale Earnhardt that two of the designs featured Dale Earnhardt accessories and I also was requested to make the casket spray and two other sympathy designs - one was a contemporary easel spray and the other was a tribute design in a pair of cowboy boots.
------------------------------------------------

The first Dale Earnhardt design ( labled dale1 ) was a specialty peice that featured the racer's photo mounted inside a section from one of his actual racing car tires. I had to create a double easel mount as the tire peice itself was extremely heavy. I then wired two floracages onto the easel supports and created the designs from there.

The second Dale Earnhardt design ( labeled dale2) was a large number 3 with the racer's name cut out in sheet steel and then painted and polished. This design took some unusual mechanics as the steel piece alone weighed about 4 pounds. To secure the steel - I took and lined the container bottom with styrofoam and then placed oasis on top of that.....then used aluminum rod to create large U-shaped struts which I bent the ends into smaller u-shapes for security and inserted all the way into the hard foam base then lifted the struts back out, dipped them into pan glue and re-inserted all the way through. I then wired the large steel peice onto the support struts.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The other two pieces in this posting are the design using the cowboy boots and the contemporary easel spray.

To continue with the sympathy design set.

In this posting, I took several pictures during the construction of the casket spray. We are fortunate that we are not limited in the height of the casket spray. We can take the design as high as we need to......Some shops limit the height of the spray to 12 inches.......reason being, so that the spray can ride on top of the casket. However, the funeral homes this little shop services carry the flowers seperately and place NO RESTRICTIONS on height.

The first image ( casket1) shows the spray at about the 1/3 complete, the second image (casket2) at about the 2/3 point, and the third image is complete.

Rick,

I'm confused...was the picture with the tire supposed to be of Dale Sr or Dale Jr? Very unique pieces!
I'm not a huge race fan.....I really don't know....All I know is that the driver used the number 3. You could count on one hand and have fingers left over.....the amount of knowledge I have about racing.

whichever it was supposed to be that's "june bug" in the center!

I guess that's why I asked...if it was supposed to be "driver #3" they pictured the wrong guy. For me, I'd rather have Dale Jr. anyway ;) Still doesn't take away from the fact that it's a really cool piece.

That first one with the tire looks like Dale Jr. who is still alive???

Heather - shows how much I know about racing......

Like my pastor says - I fail to see what is exciting about watch some fellow drive really fast making all left turns for 500 miles.

Whether it is/was Jr. or Sr. - I have no clue - the family brought the stuff in and I added the flowers.

I wasn't trying to take away from the fact that the work was awesome.

My reason for asking wasn't to question your racing knowledge because you, obviously, don't have to be a fan to capture the spirit of racing and the spirit of a racing fan. I asked because I thought that maybe the shop provided you with a picture of the wrong guy...if the family brought in the pic of Jr. then that's what they wanted :)

Doesn't matter, really...

I appreciate the comments on the work by the way.

I don't know how much the family paid for the tire piece without the flowers......but I figure it was not cheap. Likewise the sheet metal cut-out - I don't think it was handmade......not with the precision of the cuts, smooth edging, etc.......I am betting they did not get that peice cheaply either.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I do know this much.....both those specialty peices were some real heavyweights. You should have seen my face when that tire peice mounted on the single easel started bending the easel legs from the weight.......I about had a heart attack.

Beautiful work! But a question----do I see an ironing board as a worktable for the casketpiece? If so, what a great idea for extra workspace!!!

Yes, It is indeed sitting on an ironing board.

Ricky, you never cease to amaze me! These designs are show-stoppers! Way to go!

really lovely work Rick - the tire piece is my favorite.

thanks for sharing!
