I was talking to a florist that is a Teleflora Top 50 member, said that their Teleflora Top 50 trip to Mexico is coming up soon. He did mention that about half of the 50 attending are Order Gathers with no brick/mortar shop. The Top 25 florists of that group has asked Teleflora (reportedly) for a seperate Top Teleflora trip for just the florists, but they said no.

Any FlowerChatters invited by Teleflora to Mexico?

Mark, why are you so hard on Teleflora? Their stated goal is to work for the betterment of their "FLORISTS". Now just because their definition of the word "FLORIST" is different then yours, it's not a reason to be hard on them. Read in the paper that the Resnicks are one of Democratic Partys big supporters, so maybe they are just following their political leanings. You remember when Slick Willie said, "that all depends on your definition of the word sex" so they believe that it all depends on your definition of the word florist

Would I love a trip to Mexico...heck ya.

But I have such issues with these guys (OG). Why are they given so many perks (even one perk is too many).

They don't:
carry any codified containers
handle any perishable products
sell what's in season
have any product knowledge
cater to the customer (Just pass the order along)
have our typical overhead
support their community with charitable donations
participate in friendly chat boards where we all benefit from each others knowledge

In general they don't have costs that are detrimental to their bottom line.

They just keep taking the orders, keep charging the service charges, keep reaping all the wire service rewards and keep making black smudges on all our reputations.

I think they deserve a trip to a deserted Island, then we leave them there so they can all eat each other.:porttopor

I like your way of thinking...maybe we could plan our own "Reward Trip", charter a plane that would drop them off in some jungle and we'll never see them again.
Wow, maybe some director would pick up on the idea and do a tv show with the same premise, the OGs could play themselves and it would be a true reality show. The customers could tune in and see what these folks are really about.
OH MY GOD...I'VE GOT TO GET BACK TO WORK!

I just have to bring this up...if *I* dared to say these words, half of flowerchat would be up my ass with the old "wadda say about my WS, <beep>head!????" comments, yet somehow our dear estemed FC leader, Mr. Smith, can utter the very words that I would like to say, and not a peep.

Thanks, Mark, for voicing my opinion for me, so I don't have to pull the arrows from my ever-expanding gut.

Holly,

Those trips are truly top notch. The resorts are beautiful, the food excellent, the recreational events well planned, the hospitality by Teleflora and staff outstanding. It is all pleasure, eating, drinking, partying and playing with no business, all on Teleflora's dime.

But you ask an important question. Why are the top senders given so many perks? It's not because Teleflora makes money on these top senders. They don't. In fact they lose money on every one of them, millions of dollars in total.

It's because most florists are convinced they can make money on incoming wire orders. They can't, but irregardless the typical florist demands orders from the wire services. The wire services know the easiest way to sign up new members is to promise lots of orders. The easiest way to supply these orders is to pay large senders, mostly OG, large amounts of money through huge rebates and give great perks such as trips.

So really the wire services are doing it for you. They are just trying to provide you with what you've been asking for, more orders.

RC

note- when I say "you" I'm not specifically talking about Holly but florists in general

RC, Nice answer! I don't believe it's not exactly true, but you're probably pretty close. The WS side of FTD / Tele is all based on churn. Orders in, orders out, orders rejected--the wire service takes its cut. While it is becoming a less important stream of income, it's still a huge and reliable pile of money every month.

I'm not sure how much money the WS is making off the OG and frankly don't care, they make enough money off of everything else they nickel and dime us for.
But the OGs are making a HUGE profit with the commission and service charges while at the same time not spending a dime on product. They can operate with little to no overhead and still they get the perks.
If I carry the codified product, have their suggested website, use their after hours service, fill their discounted orders, etc then I would like to see some perks come my way.

Lots of industries reward their biggest producers. My sister used to be a Top Tupperware dealer and get all kinds of perks - some even get cars.

I don't really see any reason it shouldn't be that way. I don't consider this hanging out with thieves at all. (happy now 12dux?) I could drop some names that are very very far from thieves. People I want to hang out with and learn from.

Most of the florists at the FTD Top Members trips are large, highly professional B & M florists - I would say well over 90% of them. I'm guessing that the same is probably true for TF trips as well - I think whoever said it was mostly non-florist OG's was wrong.

Holly,

The wire services lose money, big time, on the top senders, in the millions of dollars, but they make up for it, big time, by selling you and 20,000 other florists memberships chalked full of fees.

They're both making all their money off the florists who fill their orders. Unfortunately with the abundance of websites not owned and operated by REAL FLORISTS, there are way more orders being generated by OGs than by B&M shops. The OG gets their commission and service charge, the WS gets their % and the filling shop gets the discounted order to try and turn into a positive marketing campaign to capture future business.
I'm just saying that there should be a better way to evenly distribute the perks to those who really work for them.

Send em to Mexico!
Make them drink the water!!!

An observation from someone in Mexico.

The number of OG here seems to be a little less this year, as I think some chased the ftd rebates that tel refusd to match.

Clay,

At the height, five years or so ago, it took roughly 16,000 outgoing wire orders to make the top 50 Teleflora trip. This was at the time when FTD was losing members like crazy. Today my guess 8,000 - 12,000 outgoing wire orders would put you in the top 50.

My guess is it takes 4,500 - 5,500 outgoing wire orders to make the FTD to 100 trip.

You all hold the magic key to the order gatherers life. Just say no! They don't have those meetings without finding fools to fill the orders. I have heard all the reasons why to fill the orders but not one has made any sense to me. You just keep feeding the hand that's going to slap you in the end. The only reason there is an order gatherer is because the florists allow them to caputure the same day delivery orders.

As long as flower shops stand in line for incoming orders from these guys things will not change and these top member meetings will continue just as they have in the past. This industry is all about control and the average flower shop is no longer in control of anything.

So as long as you keep filling the orders than give it up about the order gatherers being at the top member meetings.
