I just signed the petition. I simply cannot believe that the voice of the people can be totally ignored and a bunch of loosers can take over our government. What kind of a democracy do we live in?
You read about this kind of thing in other parts of the world and I am always greatful to live in Canada and now the same thing is happening here. I just can't believe it has gone this far.

It's not their coup of tea...

Where is the polarity, the divisiveness, the rancor?

Maybe we are too nice?!

Only in Canada you say pity.

Move this thread???

Why???

That would take someone arguing the other side (Pro-Coup). We haven't even had a discussion, 'cause everyone agrees.

Any takers????

Not even the "alphabet boys" (ABC)???

Bloody 'ell...bunch of wankers...(spoken with my best Victoria/British accent)

"Proroguing Parliament is a lot like rebooting your computer after you've finished working. You're essentially starting with a clean slate uncomplicated by all the programs you may have been into before you hit that restart command.

It's the period between two sessions of a legislative body, although it rarely happens just weeks after an election has been held."

Woo-hoo!!! Better than the other choices (coalition or another election so soon), but I wonder how much this is costing taxpayers? Is it like a paid "leave of absence" when the rest of us continue struggling to make ends meet?

Economy should be #1 priority; Politics #2.

Someone HELP US!!! Canadian taxpayers: GET INVOLVED! NOW is the time to send your thoughts to the government.

Don't blame Doug, I said it. I suspected the post would be moved because the chat section is suppose to be politics free - it was created that way because a few years back there was quite a bit of rancor. I didn't bother signing the petition, the point would be moot. The governor general agreed with Harper and has suspended parliament.

The only losers here are the Canadian people. We're stuck with another six weeks of economic uncertainty, the markets in disarray and no guarantee that the idiots in Ottawa (and I mean all the idiots) are going to get along any better when the House is back in session.

I'm pretty much a stupid American when it comes to Canadian Politics, but, is what's happening in Canada the equivalent to a Hostile Takeover?

I've seen stuff in the news about the current government being "overthrown" and a new party trying to take over.

Can somebody explain in simple (and I mean SIMPLE, hehehe) terms what is going on there. Sounds a bit scary. A simple minded but interested American wants to know. Thanks!!!

:) Well, it's not particularly hostile (we are Canadian after all).

Here's a bit of news info for you. All you really have to do is google Canadian Coalition Government and all kinds of things pop up.

By the way you're not a stupid anything. :)

The Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, is expected to try to suspend parliament today in an attempt to hang on to power, less than two months after he won re-election.

Harper will holds talks with the governor general to try to avoid an opposition no-confidence vote next week that the government would probably lose.

The governor general, Michaëlle Jean - the representative of the Queen as Canada's head of state - holds a mostly ceremonial position, but has the power to accept or reject any request Harper might make to suspend parliament.

In a televised address yesterday, Harper condemned the opposition plan to gain power as undemocratic. He vowed to use "every legal means" to stop the no-confidence vote to unseat his minority Conservative government and replace it with an opposition-led coalition.

If the coalition succeeds, it would be the first time a Canadian government has been thrown out by a no-confidence vote and replaced without an election.

A cabinet minister has suggested that Harper will ask Jean to suspend parliament until next month, giving him time to present a budget that includes a stimulus package.

The opposition liberal leader, Stephane Dion, has accused the government of having no plan to deal with the recession and said that a suspension of parliament would only delay Harper's inevitable defeat.

Canada's political crisis stems from the government's response to the global economic crisis. Three opposition parties have united against the government's handling of the economy, accusing it of failing to act.

Canada's beleaguered car and forestry sectors are backing the coalition, as it has promised to fast-track billions in dollars in spending as the country heads into a recession.

Canadians are split on who to support. According to an Angus Reid poll for Canadian TV, 64% do not support Dion becoming prime minister in a coalition government, but 53% oppose the Conservatives' current economic policy.

57% are concerned about the separatist Bloc Quebecois's role in the coalition. Analysts say Canada's political paralysis is unprecedented.

A Canadian governor general has never refused a request by the prime minister to temporarily suspend parliament, but this has never been requested to delay a no-confidence vote when it was clear the government lacked the confidence of a majority of MPs.

"There is no precedent whatsoever in Canada and probably in the Commonwealth," said Ned Franks, a constitutional scholar and political scientist. "We are in uncharted territory."

No hostile takeover...thank the British Parlimentary process...but we do have a reprieve in which the current gov't will remain in power (but no Parliamentary - equivalent to your Congress - sittings until Jan. 26when the Prime Minister will present the budget, which apparently will address a plan for the current economic situation. At that time, all members of the House will vote and if the majority of the House still lacks confidence in our Conservative gov't and the opposition parties pursue a no-confidence vote then we may face another election.

I sure hope some other worthy Canadian politician shows him/herself before then because the current candidates aren't all that popular with the Canadian public, so we could very well end up in the same situation anyway.

I don't believe a coalition government could ever truly be formed in Canada and/or take over running the country. Just my opinion tho.

If Harper has only been in power 2 months, how can they oust him so quickly?
