Toy soldiers, Halloween teeth recalled over lead-poisoning fears
Wed Oct 31, 5:56 PM

By Richard Van Abbe, The Canadian Press--

TORONTO - From toy soldiers to monster teeth, tens of thousands of Chinese-made toys were swept from North American store shelves Wednesday because they contain high levels of lead.

In the largest such recall, major toy retailer Toys "R" Us pulled about 16,000 Chinese-made Elite Operations toys from its U.S. stores because their surface paint contains excessive levels of lead.

A Health Canada spokeswoman said only 52 of the military-style toys had been sold in Canada, and were also being recalled.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned consumers early on Wednesday - Halloween Day - that $2 packages of "Ugly Teeth" sold by the tens of thousands since last year contain excessive amounts of lead.

The joke teeth, identified by product numbers 394207 and 390630, were imported from China by Amscan Canada of Dorval, Que. Health Canada said 571 of the items had been sold across the country at a variety of retail outlets.

An Amscan spokesman said the company was in the process of contacting retailers to ask that they be removed from shelves.

Wednesday's Toys "R" Us recall in Canada included three Elite Operations toy sets: the Command Patrol Center (Sku 661317), the Barracuda Helicopter with two figures (Sku 661287) and the Combatant Squad three-pack of 20-centimetre (8-inch) figures (Sku 577286 ).

Joey Rathwell, a Health Canada spokeswoman, said the excessive lead levels had been found in paint used on the toys' logos. She said the products were new stock and most were unsold and had been removed from shelves.

Rathwell noted that the "Ugly Teeth" were particularly dangerous because "they are meant to go in the mouth." Simply handling the product "would not cause major lead poisoning."

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause neurological damage.

Under Canada's Hazardous Products Act, lead content in paints applied to toys must not exceed 600 milligrams per kilogram.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or illness in connection with either recall.

This is the second recall of lead-tainted children's products for Toys "R" Us this month. Earlier in the month, the company recalled Totally Me! Funky Room Decor Sets, also due to high lead levels in surface paints.

China "says"... more proof required please.

China cracks down on toy factories, bars more than 700 from exporting

By The Associated Press

BEIJING - Government officials say more than 700 toy factories in booming southern China have been banned from exporting what they produce as part of a crackdown on shoddy products.

The four-month-long crackdown was triggered by widespread reports of dangerous or faulty Chinese exports, including toys tainted with lead, toothpaste laden with an antifreeze ingredient, and pet food fortified with an industrial chemical.

The Guangdong provincial government said Thursday the export bans followed inspections of nearly 85 per cent of China's toy factories.

Of those, a government statement says 764 had their export licenses revoked or suspended "because of various quality problems."

Another 690 were ordered to renovate their plants and improve product quality.

Problems in China's toy industry came into focus earlier this year when America's Mattel Inc. recalled more than 21 million Chinese-made toys worldwide. Products including Barbie doll accessories and toy cars were pulled off shelves because of concerns about lead paint or tiny detachable magnets that could be swallowed.

Design flaws caused the vast majority of the recalls, but the problem has rebounded on producers in Guangdong, where 5,000 toy-making enterprises accounted for about 80 per cent of China's toy exports last year.

About 1.5 million people are employed by the factories, which produced $16.1 billion worth of toys last year.

The government says it also has sponsored quality control training for more than 1,000 people in the country's toy industry in an effort to ensure export safety.

Aqua Dots!!

DATE RAPE!!!

Aqua Dots are covered with a product that when digested becomes GHB, AKA: Date Rape Drug Fantasy...

Yup, made in China!!

Not to mention baby bottles...water bottles....

Luc

Talk on the street is that you were seen stocking up on Aqua Dots to go along with the lead based sex toys. Any truth to this?

ps, did you finally translate those instructions from Chinese?

I'm actually afraid....

for my grandchildren!!
There is an epidemic of poorly constructed children's toys, that are basically dangerous to their health.
Many people do NOT realize how lead ingestion affects little people differently from big people, and it's NOT a joke!!
North American consumers are idiots, if they think they can buy cheap, and get quality built things.....at the expense, of putting our own out of work!!

I had to purchase some baby gifts recently, for our very pregnant shop helper (she was due Monday - she's on her way in to work today .....) and I was tempted by all the cutsey things at Babies R Us, but limited myself to only a beautiful organic cotton blanket, and gift set of Aveeno natural creams and washes. And organic Hershey's chocolate. Didn't want to take the chance on any of the adorable but suspect toys and trinkets.

I see a depressing trend, if there isn't some kind of resolution to all the doubt this has created.

Today the news says they are recalling something like 175,000 curious George toys.

My little boy wants a Woody (Toy Story - getcher mind out of the gutter!) He already has Buzz Lightyear and CAN'T quit saying "to infinity and beyond".

Can I find him one without the lead contamination?

One question tho....when we grew up didn't everything have lead paint in it or on it?

"There's A Snake in my boot"!

The Woody dolls are made by Hasbro. I did a research of Hasbro recalls and none of the Toy Story toys are on the list.

Toys R Us has the pull string Woody and Jesse for 21.99.(together in the same box). The woody doll has a guitar, it's a cute toy (I have one) but if he just wants a regular woody doll I would recommend : The Deluxe electronic adventure woody for $19.99. I found it on the Hasbro website. They don't make the standard Woody doll anymore, this is as close as you're gonna get.
I have all of the Toy Story toys, my daughter was a huge fan of the movie!! Name it we have it, even the Christmas Train..
They are good toys, I would go ahead and buy it, Hasbro seems to have an ok record as far as recalls go they only had 2 this past year (easy bake ovens) .
I hope this helped!!
Ho Ho Ho

I think any place on the planet who makes this stuff should be sanctioned.

I hate the fact the olympics are in China and we are sending teams. I hate supporting a place like that in any way.

So we're a generation of dain bramageds?

This just in!

The Poker Chips at Ceasars Palace and many other casinos contain 160 times the allowable lead content...

And they sed lead based particles every time they are touched...particles so small they can be absorbed thru the skin.
