In thinking about the venture with the most hated retailer in the country and FTD a light bulb went off......probably I am the last one to think of this but here goes. In all of the Walmarts down here, they have separate jewelry, pharmacy, tires, electronics, optical "kiosks" etc. When the bubble with the Real Florists on filling bursts, currently they are showing prices less than we have on our site or even that of Dotcom......but the florists are getting the dotcom price....anyway when Walmart realizes the money they can make, or when FTD realizes the difficulty that they have getting florists to accept orders from dotcom, do you think that Walmart will add a Floral Kiosk to their stores. That would certainly eliminate the issues that we as a group are "creating" by taking back our industry........also it seems that the "distribution" centers that FTD was supposedly setting up seem to have been stopped....or am I hearing the wrong thing? Maybe the Grand Plan on this really BIG 2 is to eliminate Florists period....certainly a business stategy that Walmart has done with other industrys........could this be a long term plan or am I just being paranoid? Well enough break time....back to the business of making money!

Huh?

Have the Walmart kiosks deliver the flowers and act as fulfillment centres.

No more florists required.

I thought you were "busy"....

Sher, NO TIME for "paranoid"......
As long as WalMart has "kiosks" they might as well become "fulfilment' CENTRES AS WELL...because, FROM my PERSPECTIVE, real florists ARE BEING CHANNELLED, out of the WS and OG loop...
You know what???...that WORKS for me just fine!!

Maybe thats why both FTD and TF say it'll take months to put checks and balances into place...

Funny how the letter from Teleflora was exactly like the one from the other guy, regarding "Quality Assurance".

yeah but

At some point they will become "the florist shop" and no matter what you say....small florists will be put out of business just like every other industry and then what..go work for WALMART? If you have your business based around wireins and the WS;s you better be changing things and working the local traffic or eventually they will be able to get everything at Walmart.....and the more we yak, .the more they know and we have been busy showing our "hand" because they come in here and read everything we say.....so if you want to "block" their business on MD, they will no doubt have a back up plan in place....they will not allow themslves to be holding the bag. Say Hi to FTD/TF everyone!

Keep in mind too, that TFDT still make most of their money and thus profit from the florists... they would be stupid to think they can grow on Walmart alone...

Thing they are doing though, by not fessing up and fixing the problems they helped to create, like removing the deception is that they are driving florists away from them, to technologies like MAS, to other order transmission methods like FSI and IFA, and this will continue.

Sher, I believe the business will continue to consolidate and change but I also think the WS model, foccused on brokering, is in serious trouble.

McDonald's didn't put every other burger stand out of business. Barnes & Noble didn't knock out every indy bookstore. Did Supercuts kill every salon? They all made big impacts, but the folks successful at their trades still have solid places in communities.

Why do you think 1800 stopped expanding their company-owned stores? Why did the Gerald Stevens model fail? Because each community is different and floristry - arranged flowers - is a weird cocktail of biz/art/service/flexibility/independence that makes it tough to hire in-store staffs to run them like we nutty owners do.

Oh, BTW, Hi to FTD and TF (just in case...)

On a humorous note - my brother-in-law (age 57) who was laid off from TRW (engineer) one year before retiring is bored to death and just accepted a job at Walmart :hammer: . He said he hasn't made that little since he was 19 years old. They moved up north (Gaylord, MICH) and live in the boonies. He was here all day today with my sister as they drove down as she is working for us this weekend and Monday and he cleaned flowers, emptied garbages, gophered. Yep, he's bored alright!

I played today

on the Walmart site...

How they are doing it I don;t know... did not want to use any real information once I found out they keep all clicks even if you abandon the site there is an account set up... I hope Bob Roller whoever he is does not have an email of [email protected] with a passowrd of spanish... have ya'll

anyway, I was still able to order ONE DOZEN ROSES for $26.99 delivered TODAY with a sertvice charge of $9.94... WTF????

It is important

for florists to deny fufillment services to these 3rd partys in a big way in a short period of time. If it is a long, dragged out affair. It only gives time for them to adjust.

Building an infrastructure can be done on their part.(if they choose to do it) but it takes time to establish. Especially if quality is going to be a consern on their part.

The sooner their credibality in the market place is ruined, the harder and more cost prohibitive entry becomes to accomidate the work themselfs.

Seeing all the other attempts to enter this field have either failed or have been suspended doesn't mean that we can sit on our hands and hope for the best.

Given the type of print media given the industry this holiday. I'm optomistic that the goal can be obtained. In my view, this was the first Valentines day where the attention given the Florists did not center on the price of roses and how expensive they were. Which was a first.(at least arround my neck of the woods).

Despite our differences of opinions as to the nature and effect of the articles and stories. The bottom line for the vast majority of them was to visit your local Florist. And when was the last time that tune was sung???

Place the order - see who delivers it.

Ryan

Only one shop in town filling for Da Dot these days... I quit the Tuesday before VD, or maye one of the shops that list Midland an as ASB, all at least 10 miles away...no money in that.

Next step is to change the % on Dot.com orders :)

I think you've nailed the real danger. Wally World is using the greed and STUPIDITY of Soenen and FTD to test fly something that they'll take over for themselves just as soon as they learn all the in's and out's of setting up a nationwide system.

With the Wally World/FTD relationship in place, anybody who fills a .com order is running the risk of sending Wally World a message on just how easy and profitable their venture could be. FTD florists had better wake up and start giving those orders some real problems in addition to NOT filling them if they want WM to stay out of their local nest. Cause once they're in, the jig is up . . . and the florist who was happily filling those orders will no longer be in business.

My point about Wal-Mart and FTD was just what you said. And I said it several months ago and some people took offense. You are so correct about all you said. Before you know it we will all be working for Wal-Mart and getting food stamps and medical care from the state.

Winn-Dixie announced

that due to increasing pressure from Walmart in the South-East USA that they will over the next several months close 150 of their 270 stores, and most likely will file for Chapter 11.
