Okay, so lately my husband and I have been in deep discussion over whether or not I should wear my ring to work anymore.

I am deeply in love with my wedding ring, it was custom made and designed for me by my husband and has a matching ruby eternity band that I designed with the jeweler.

There is truly not another one like it in the whole wide world.

But... being a florist has been very harsh to it. I have only been married four years and have had it repaired once and it is already showing all the wear and tear again.

Soooo... my husband is saying to put it away and get a cheap band to wear (because replacing my ring every five years is not a reality) and I am so sad over the thought of putting my bands in a box.

What do my fellow coupled/married flowerchatters do? Do you cheapie it, go "naked", or just wear it anyway?

I look forward to hearing your input!

Wow, that is a tough question. I think you will find that most of us that make our living with our hands think twice about this.

I have chosen to wear mine, but, I have it checked yearly and have the prongs redone very often. Sometimes, on really rough days, I do leave it at home. I do have it insured but, I would rather have the ring than the insurance money.

I've had mine on for 39 years and it's not going in a box. I've had it repaired many times. On our 35th. anniversary my husband gave me another beautiful ring. I said to him shall I wear it in place of my wedding ring? His response was no it's for your other hand. Haven't had it off in four years either.

I have chosen to wear mine. Even with the cost of having it repaired more frequently.

I have a rose ring (truly designed as a rose, the stem wraps around my finger) with rhodolite (raspberry) and tsavorite (green) garnets and it is one of only a handful ever produced in the world. I lost a stone and it had to go back to the designer in California and be redone with the original masters as the two repair jobs I had here butchered it. I didn't wear it for 2-3 years after I got it back, except on special occasions. In the end I decided I'd much rather bear the cost of repair then to lose the joy of wearing it.

One thing you should always make sure do is to take your rings off if you're working with bleach and never swim in a pool with your jewelry, the chlorine is one of the worst things you can expose your jewelry to.

I have a diamond with an emerald and a Topaz a band that is a channel band of all diamonds, I have been wearing in for over 20 years. I have never taken them off except when in the hospital. I have never had a problem and they show no wear. If i had to keep fixing I would have to rethink that though.

Since I do not have long elegant fingers, my left hand has a wide wedding band only. My right hand has an anniversary band which Tom bought me to celebrate our 15th anniversary. Two roses of channel set-in diamonds. Nice setting, rugged for me. (I helped to pick it).

In spite of our careful choice, I have managed to need to get my ring repaired on several occasions. I will do it gladly as needed, for every day I get the pleasure of looking at my hand and feeling the love given with this ring.

I've been married 22 years! I love my ring too, but, I am just not a jewerly girl.
I don't like things attached to me , wrapped around me, hanging on my lobes or wrists.
This all happened in the last few years.....hmmm... menapause?
I speak of my husband all of the time, so it is no secret that we are secure and happy in our
relationship. BTW, He is a carpenter, and requested not to have a wedding band.
It has never ever bothered me.

I have a simple princess cut diamond on 4 prong and a wedding band on the outside. both white gold, and discolor a bit but an occational cleaning does the job.

wow, I never (had to) thought about repair and damaging. My model is that the rings Never comes off the finger, not even when one of us goes to the grave. But obviously, your reason is more of a practical concern than mine.

If I had to repair it often, as long as we can afford it, I'd work it into the budget and wear it daily still. I would also have a detailed picture of it in case I need to replace it for any reason down the road.

Mine is three bands soldered together, large stone in center band with smaller either side. Then the outside bands have stones all along them.

I absolutely love it, but fear losing diamonds in a vase, or trash. I don't wear it normally, like Marigold don't care for things on my hands, and it is so wide too.

However for kicks, I have been known to wear a toe ring (in the summer), and an ankle bracelet. I like my charm braclet too surprisingly it doesn't bother me when designing.

Hubby doesn't wear his band sometimes, but hey love was not built around a ring.

All the jewelry is already in the will for the granddaughters and daughters in law.

When you get older "things" don't seem as important in the scheme of life.
I'll have all the crowns I can wear one day...

How about slipping it on a chain around your neck?? Then you will still be wearing it and you can put it back on your finger at the end of the day.

No cost but you still feel like you are wearing it.:)

Mine is a cheap white gold ring, so i am not too bothered about it to be honest.

Mine is in my jewelery box broken and needing repair or recast which ever is better ($800) two years ago. My husband wanted to buy me a replacement, but I have never seen anything like me and I really like mine best with my engagement ring. There is not replacing or subbing...My Engagement ring has a prong thats not happy, so I am ringless at the moment.

I would wear my wedding ring out again as I loved it and what it stands for.

My husband is ringless as his doesn't fit anymore.

Hubby and I are both ringless right now due to the fact that they no longer fit us. The intricate design prevents us from having them sized.

Like Palms said, MY girl wears her rings on a special gold chain around her neck....MY ring, on the other hand, has been crushed, hacked, cut off a couple of times, when my finger swelled, and lost once and found by weird coincidence, so it stays put, on my finger, for the "next" adventure

I have an emerald engagement ring, with a matching delicate band. Hubby gave me a channel set emerald band for my 30th bd that slips between them. Emeralds are very delicate, and though I'm careful with them, they have chips that have developed from using my hands so frequently.

I wear them all together, or any one of them alone or sometimes none at all. When on vacation in St Martin, he bought me a white gold band, because I wanted something "summery" - I wear that as well. I'm attached to all of them, they all show wear, but it doesn't bother me to not wear them either ....

I also have a tattoo on my ring finger, matching his. That one never comes off!

My rings reside in the jewelry box. I've had numerous repairs and replaced settings several time due to wear - it was a yearly event. I guess I am really hard on jewelry. Right now, the wedding band need replacing (its worn pretty thin), my anniversary band need to be reattached. The $ is not in the budget at this time.

Hubby's ring wore thin and broke this past summer so his is also in the box keeping mine company. He had a band with ivy etc but the pattern has now worn smooth.

Perhaps in a year or two we will both get new.

I wear my ring and only had to repair it once about a year and a half ago. Its a round diamond with channel set baguetts in a bypass design.. very late 90's. We were engaged in 1998 and didn't get married until 2002, I wanted a long engagement.
And I have been very hard on it. Usually it's covered in lotion.

Hubbys ring is a simple brushed white gold band. When he was working in the oil field he only wore it on days off.

We have both thought about ditching the rings and just getting our fingers tattooed.
I'm totally down with that.

I wear a simple gold band most days - we all know how rough being a florist is on our hands and during my time off - well gardening, painting and such is equally hard on them. My engagement ring is a sapphire, a "softer" stone as is my wedding ring - I love the opportunity to get dressed up and wear my "real" rings on. When light hits the stones, I never fail to smile.

Having lost the center stone twice and the surrounding stones numerous times - I decided to stop wearing them daily before therings didn't feel like they were the ones my husband give me.

Every decision like this is personal - there are no wrong answers.

It is so heartwarming to hear that this is a consideration you have had to ponder also.

I think my heart is beginning to lean toward getting a simple gold band to wear that I can abuse without thinking twice about it.

But I am loving the responses!

just a note: if you do get a setting that has a stone, make sure you get more than a 4 prong setting. If one prong breaks off the stone will stay in place. With 4 prongs if one breaks you most likely will loose your stone.

speaking from experience

my rings are a single solitaire, round cut set in 4 prongs.... The wedding band is a two tone gold band(shiny/matte) with a little itty bitty diamond in the middle. My diamond ring actually saved my finger when I was working in printing. It took the brunt of a very heavy door known to damage fingers....the diamond got hit head on and I didn't get a damaged hand. WHEW!! It got a bit crooked but the stone was not loose at all! I was amazed...my brother saw the shape my ring was in and had it repaired...what a nice brother huh?

I think the idea of wearing the ring on a chain around your neck is a great one. You can put it on the chain when you get in the shop and take it off when you close doors!
