Ok so I was in the shop today and had 17 vases to green. It took me about 1 hr & 20 minutes with 4 customers(placing orders, buyng out of th ecooler or my having to arrange something real quick) coming in the doors. So tell me, is that reasonable, too long of time or just right? I'm trying to figure out if I'm improving or not.
Thanks a bunch!

well love, that is a bit vague...

If you were greening budvases... way too long..

So what kind of vases? dozen size, 1/2 dozen size.. And what type of greens were you using? Just leather? No leather? etc..

So you really had less than an hour to do it all. Unless you were doing budvases, and assuming you were doing dozen size vases, with a variety of greens, I think you did just fine. Was your boss giving you grief over it?

Oh no no grief...just my personal pressure that's all!! lol
oh the vases were I think 8" rose vases(not quite sure of the exact name-we use them for all sorts of arrang.) and also I think 11" cylinder not narrow but wide...hmm...say 4-6 in. diameter?? Hope this helps!

I would say you are doing just fine. With the distractions you were dealing with - it takes a moment to rev your speed back up and get in the greening zone. I think you did well.

Thanks Leah! :)

I watched a good designer today (don't remember her name right now - design show, commentary later) do 10 vase arrangements in 10 minutes.

A minute per arrangement is a pretty high bar to set even for an experienced designer, I'd say.

WOW she must have been in a speed race with herself. I don't care to be like that....

ahhh but thy were all pretty, nice, and most of all - selleable

place them....not sure what you mean by tie?? Yes, I'm still a newbie. The only thing I know is when I green I'm supposed to "lock it in" with 3-4 stems of greens....of which I do. Oh by the way Shannon, I was using salal with plumosa I believe... I could be wrong as I always confuse plumosa with another one that is similar.

Over here we hand tie everything, generally we dont use vases like you do or if we do we would hand tie the flowers and then place them in. I wondered if you did the same.

Well, i must say i dont speak on behalf of britain, that is just what i have found. I personally make handtied bouquets and then put them in a box with water and we wrap them with tissue and cellophane.

Oh! Ok...I thought that was what you were referring to but I didn't want to assume anything. Thanks for letting me know!

No problems, do you guys sell vases with flowers placed in them? Is that the main seller or do you have a version of tied arrangements?

We do hand-tied too. When someone comes in to get loose wrapped flowers I like to hand-tie them. And we do call them "European" too interestingly. lol Makes it sound fancier, don'tcha know

But when we make arrgs in a vase we design them in the vase.

Oh Aileen and Robin, can you show me photos pls. I am intrigued at how different we do the every day things.

If I am just greening with two types of greens it takes about 1-2 minutes each especially vases...I have 24 years experience...

I can distinctly remember at 6 months my aunt timeing my ftd 5" basket greening with leather leaf alone, but the old fashioned heavy greening at 5 min per... so I would say if you are somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes you are doing good...

I can usually complete green and construct 6-8 wedding centerpieces and hour production style....These would be the slowest because they often need to be more elaborate and fussy with design... regular vases I can usually make 8-10 50.00 recipe vases an hour...

Basic greening in a huge hurry I have been know to whack out as many as 50 in an hour...you'll get better as long as you up timing yourself...

I understood Bloomz to say the designer made whole arrangements in one minute each, not just greening in. That sounds physically impossible (though I do believe him and would love to see it!)

Paula, showing you a pic wouldn't show you that much, it's just a regular arrangement; they probably look the same whether you hand tie it and plop it in, or design in the vase. Do you mean that you guys never design in the vase?

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of what we do. When someone comes in and purchases loose flowers from the array of flower buckets we usually give them some greens to go with and then wrap it up in tissue, cello & ribbon and they're on their way. If they purchase an already made bouquet from a bucket, then we wrap the ends with tissue (for the wetness) and tie it with a ribbon. Depending on how much loose stems they purchase I will just wrap it in brown kraft paper-more sturdier to me for transport...since they will be arranging it later. In the cooler we have various vase arrangements, ranging from bubble bowls, cubes and vases all in varying sizes. Hope this helps.
