I had a man call today and ask if I would honor the "Triple Passion" from 1800. That consists of a red tower, 18 mixed roses, and gourmet candy for $29.99. I told him there is no way. He said he would order online then. I told him that they will have a hard time finding a florist to accept that order in my area.

What price point are you rejecting for a dozen roses?

Hi
I just got back. I stopped by Horan's Flowers in Simsbury Ct and spoke with Tom. They are getting $95 dozen. Sales slightly down, but he is sure he will sale out. It was nice to stop by a real flower shop.

I invited him to join FlowerChat. If he does please welcome him. 3rd generation wonderful man with two large photos of Grandpa and Grandma on the wall of the store.

You do know that that is a box rose delivery...The man was not comparing apples to apples...You could have sold him the uncleaned roses straight out of the sleeve with a 4oz box of chocolates and a glass vase for that amount but you probably wouldn't let it leave you shop looking like that...

You should have told him that the difference was that yours come assembled so the chick doen;t have to do anything but enjoy them for days and days...

A guy came in last week to order roses. When I told him the price, he said, "I thought they were $39.99. That's what they're saying on TV." He admitted that he had seen a ProFlowers ad (or similar...I'm a bit brain-tired this morning). When I explained that the roses would arrive in a box without a vase, and he would be charged all sorts of additional fees, he placed his order with us and thanked us for telling him about the other.

surely know one would do that order for that price...would they??I had numerous calls that said well I will justs order on line then...how could they drop ship 29.99 roses when we paid over a dollar for them wholesale??? does it take a rocket scientist!!!?????

We had some pre made bouquets of colored roses for 19.99. Had one guy come in and tell me that was a ridiculous price...snotball...thankfully he left.

Why do people expect real florist quality at a Walmart price? I decided that I am going to play the game. I am going to wrap 12 roses with no greens or fillers and put on the sign $19.99. I might only make a few bucks but some might find the cooler options better when they walk in. And the more I take away from the WS and OG, the better it is for me and all of us. Anyone aboard?

the shop down the street does that for $14.99 most days....then they come here and ask for greens and baby's breath and better wrapping!
(I refuse when they want a card - that has my imprint on them)

By carrying the premade bouquets that were 50 cm, had 1 stem of bb, nice sleeve and flower food, I was able to keep business in my shop that might go to the grocery store...mine were fresh and there was no labor other than cutting them and placing them in a bucket...we also had red freedoms in the box..60% red 40 % colors...the red we sold at 29.99. We paid 9.49 per bouquet so for me it was a win-win play. We sold all of them.We got in four boxes packed 16 bunches each.
I refuse to let someone else grab my business if I can help it...
Funny part of the three days was that the item we sold the most was dozen, 2 doz and three doz red roses...all at our everyday price..this year not one person made the all famous statement " you must be making bundles". I think customers are finally realizing that that is not the case.
Our phone calls were way up, wire ins down, our average sale was over 65, except the cash and carrys and we sent out more couture designs than we have ever done. ...we worked as hard as we could...
From what I have heard, all the WS's did not do as well as they thought they would ..for me, that brings me a sense of great pleasure...

You cannot be serious that they are that ballsy. What are they thinking...

The Customers, yep, those who buy them....

the shop asks $5.00 for greens and $5.00 for baby's breath. They wrap in gift tissue (can you say quick freeze in the winter)
Oh and they're closed this week for February vacation .....

I had a guy come in to buy BB to put with his roses he bought at Walmart. He's a somewhat regular customer too (I did their wedding). I can't believe he admitted why he needed it. He said he thought he'd save a stop by just getting them there. After I gently chewed him out, I sold him some BB & thanked him dearly for his business. Convenience & price, I guess.

Now that you say that, same here. Not one that I heard - now I'll have to ask the others & see if it was mentioned to anyone else. Every year we get that comment, and I'm always uncomfortable answering it, no matter which way I try to.

I also did not hear it once...

I did get a few asking if business was off because of the economy and if it will hurt business and make it hard between now and Mother's day..Maybe some people do understand how this biz works...I was appreciative of their concern, and more appreciative of not having to squirm answering the other question...

My super PIA customer is a man who shows up on the holidays and always wants only my attention. Takes way too long to pick out what he wants while making comments on how much everything costs. Asks for prices on everything in sight and settles on the cheapest thing. Then he wants it made right away. This year he popped in the door at 7:00am Saturday wanting his typical three $15 arrangements, took one with him and then stopped back for the other two. As I am boxing his two arrangements, he goes to the car and brings in two roses and two stems of euc that he got free at Macy's and says can you put these in the vase too. As I jammed them in the bud vases he bought, he continues with his command performance of how expensive it is to keep all "us women" happy. I did manage to say while your keeping them happy let them know those two roses didn't come from us, when they die first. I wanted to throw my knife at him, but there were witnesses.

I have always appeased him, because he is loud, and it seemed easier to just give him my attention and move him along, but my tolerance for cocky, arrogant customers is fading. Fast.
