I miss the old days of head banging and gab (what 10 months and he thinks he's old here?) Now that all the easily offended have left, we need to post more. I find myself resorting to political forums and creative sites in lieu of this. I will admit I have been off my derrière because I've been on the run, but it used to be nice to check in with 20 new posts to read. I think we are missing the social aspect of FlowerChat besides all the golden revelations of Flower Business 101. I think we worry unnecessarily about offending the easily offended but so what, I want to read how creative minds work and solve problems. I wade through ALL THE WS CRAP and wet my panties even though I could care less, but I love the creative stuff more and eat it up.

There are tons of talent here just like there are tons of angles to business that needs to be discussed. I just watched a segment on "Open Book Managing" that I found intriguing, nothing to do with flowers, but everything to do with alternative ways some successful businesses are doing it. It's stuff like this that we can open in this forum.

There are lots of lurkers that rarely add 2 cents to the pot, but give us a pence and let us get to know you, sometimes a single penny can be worth a million bucks to those that might be looking for it.:GP

Since the post about people posting the wrong stuff on the wrong board, I am trying NOT to post. I am not too computer swavy and I know I have posted in the wrong place before but I didn't realize it made a difference really.

Honestly, I just haven't had the time lately. I keep thinking I'm missing some really good, juicy posts because I don't have time to look through them!

It would be interesting to have some kind of a book club. Interested members choose a title on a subject like marketing, read it, and then post specific thoughts on how the ideas could be applied to this business.

Great idea.

We should also create a forum category for discussion of the nuances of the forum, that we can chose to ignore it if we want. These discussions are becoming tiresome.

Sorry TG, this is part of the problem. I don't have time to read everything I want to already, and I don't have time to be very social here, sorry all, but I have my businesses to run. If we all focused on that, we wouldn't be looking for scapegoats as to why our businesses aren't working.

Thanks.

yep - god forbid -- there seems to be allot of rules here -- I agree... The timid members sure will not post... and honestly not all that friendly a place sometimes -- People just want to feel like they are a part of something even if they do not post...

You forum trouncers -- make it easier for these folks!

What can be done to make things more inviting to everybody?

I was too busy to check into flowerchat and follow the threads when the drama went down so I honestly don't know what happened. I haven't posted because:

A. I don't know what went down and who has a problem with who

B. I've been too busy.

c. There haven't been enough new threads that I've been able to relate to/ put in my feedback

I'm waiting though. This is a good start!

Well, the posts may not have been so much in terms of quantity...........but they have been some good thought-provoking posts.......in terms of quality.

Ditto
and I'm really trying to focus on my day to day business to keep a float.
I really don't feel like I have all that much to contribute at this time, but I do read and try to stay in touch every few days.

I'm game for this idea. A few weeks back I posted asking for a recommendation on which Seth Godin book to read. Cathy suggested "Purple Cow." I got half way thru it on the plane to NY two weeks ago. I loved it and would gladly talk about what I gleaned from it in a book club type forum.

Of course I have to go on vacation again to get the other half of the book read...

In answer to your original question Tom, I too don't post much because I don't know what to talk about (WS aren't really my area of expertise.) The book club thing solves that a little. Oh yeah and I am busy. But hopefully we all are.;)

I think everyone like myself are just really busy.

Trying to make sense of business, keeping the doors open, dealing with shortage of employees on busy days, dealing with too many employees on the slow days.

I can honestly say that this year as owners linh and I have worked harder then ever and we are just getting tired.

I'm a little overwhelmed with internet stuff.

Too many hats to wear over here!!

Because of posts complaining about the trivial posts by unimportant people, I have cut back on posting and mostly just lurk now, after all, I'm just a designer, not a store owner. I do have to thank FC for all the invaluable information and insight I have gleaned and passed on to the business I work for. Good luck getting more folks to come out of the wood work, it's not in our nature to begin with I guess.

Eric has the best answer as to why folks aren't posting as much as they used to!

To encapsulate our dilemma in one word, I choose "OVERWELMED"!

Retail Business in this recession has become MIND BOGGLING in our efforts to just try and SURVIVE.

And a majority of LUNATICS on the Senate Health Care reform committee just went through the first round of the BAUCUS DEBACLE allowing it to move on to the next reconciliation round.

So, let MEE SEE HEAR ANDY! What's we got so far in their DEBACLE bill?

1. No TORT/LITIGATION REFORM: The trial lawyers were one of the biggest contributors to the DNC, so payback time is the order of their day.

2. No Interstate Competition: The States' Legislature's were the biggest recipients of their State's Blessed Health Care Insurance providers. (1,700 National Health Care Insurance Providers and in New York State, we can only choose from their 6.)

3. $500 MILLION stolen out from under our current Medicare program.

4. $500 MILLION in New Taxes on the RICH? No, the middle class, those earning less than $250K each year, OH MY!

5. A $40 a month fine by the IRS for people who don't participate. Which means that, it's cheaper to pay the fine than to get the insurance. Then, and when they get sick, they can buy into the insurance they need, because the carriers must take them regardless of a pre-existing condition.

6. No PUBLIC/GOVERNMENT RUN OPTION, but HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS. Given the fact that, their bill is designed to FAIL, thus costing wee taxpayers an INCREASE to our already too high Health Care Insurance premiums of a projected $2,000.00 per year, their eventual PLANNED FAILURE will trigger the GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. (Take a number and get to the end of the line)

7. PUBLIC/GOVERNMENT RUN OPTION: That's where the PAYBACK to the Unions come into play, as it is they who demand this, and it is their money and votes who command this.

8. No ILLEGAL ALIENS: AH, not quite! The Supreme Court will overturn any law the Congress enacts or the Seanate tries to enforce, to exclude ILLEGAL ALIENS from the benefits of their bill, the keyword being "PERSONS". (Plyler v.Doe Texas 1982) http://www.txccri.org/publications/PublicEd.pdf

As to JOHN Q PUBLIC? (aka: MEE and U)

Get ready to put up a fight for your FREEDOMS and LIBERTIES guaranteed under our Constitution, as the SOCIALISTS are trying to steal them out from under all of us by using code words like FREE and HEALTH. Nothing in our Constitution allows them to userp our Freedom of Choice, let alone establish a mandated Government Run Health Care Insurance program.

Think you're working harder and longer now? Just wait until they get through their HEALTH CARE INSURANCE REFORM DEBACLE along with the CAP & TRADE TAX BILL, not to mention the end of the Bush Tax cuts, which they have no intention of renewing.

A friend who owns a Gas Station just told me that, the welfare recipients just got the ability to use SPEED PASS at his Mobil/Exxon Station. We just don't want to embarrass those consumers (They used to be called WELFARE RECIPIENTS and CLIENTS) by having to use their OLD FOOD STAMP BOOKS. That's been replaced with DEBIT CARDS, and OMG, freeken SPEED PASS Transponders?

So, THE POOR by the newer better Liberal definition means that: You have your WIC, Section 8 Rent Subsidy, Food Debit Card, Car paid for, Car insurance paid for, Speed Pass paid for, clothing allowance, child daycare paid for, and FREE HEALTH CARE INSURANCE (Medicaid) paid for, and what's this? Say What, NO DEDUCTIBLE and NO FREEKEN CO-PAY?

OH, and you're an ILLEGAL ALIEN? No Problem, we'll just put you on Social Security Disability, and since you can't work, your ILLEGAL ALIEN WIFE with her 4 anchor babies, and we'll send ya a BONUS check from the Federal Government for $6,000.00 each year, and we'll call that, EARNED (un-earned) INCOME TAX CREDITS. (AKA: Redistribution of our EARNINGS)

After all, these Welfare Families should have a 52" inch flat screen Television in their home, cable, a cell phone, and be able to take their family to DISNEYWORLD each summer, just like the rest of those mean spirited WORKING Middle Class Americans. You know who they are! They are the ones who want to keep all of you down on the plantation.

What's this you say? The average ILLEGAL ALIEN FAMILY cost the taxpayers $1.3 MILLION DOLLARS in lifetime benefits? But hey, that's called CHEAP LABOR doing the jobs AMERICAN CITIZENS refuse to do.

Sign mee up now! I want a piece of this action ASAP! $100 CASH a day for six days (no taxes), you buy lunch, and drive me to and fro? Call me on my FREE CELL PHONE! (1-GOT-YOU-FOOL)

I'm truly sorry you've been made to feel this way. Please remember not to tar the whole community with one brush.

I do hope you'll quit lurking and put forth your thoughts and ideas... that's how we all learn.

This one makes me feel really sad....

Just one womans' opinion:

1) We need (actually have-to-have) different perspectives or else we risk missing important trends in an ever-changing environment. Too much 'group think' where everyone agrees and is h*ll bent on just shoring up the status quo is foolish & dangerous.

2) 'Social' posts (chat, jokes, etc...) are a healthy part of a community - even in the real world. All biz all the time leaves out the human, relationship factor.

3) On the 'trivial' from Saint Teresa:
Our souls may lose their peace and even disturb other people's, if we are always criticizing trivial actions - which often are not real defects at all, but we construe them wrongly through our ignorance of their motives.

In other words, don't let someone else's hastily posted words affect how you perceive your contributions here. They are much appreciated. :)

And besides, if you give up then you let the bullies run the schoolyard. ;)

V

I'm with Tuberose - I now read Flowerchat about once a week to get caught up on topics but I rarely ever post.

Yes, I know 'bullies in the schoolyard'. With my day to day concerns, I got tired of the general nastiness that reared up a few months back. I got tired of being told that if I didn't agree I was either stupid, ill-informed or just misguided. I got tired of posts like this one getting derailed by people to promote or support their own agendas. I just got tired.

Do I think there's valuable information on Flowerchat - you bet. There's a lot of information here that's a huge asset to florists. I do believe, however; that a lot of that information gets lost when the general tone becomes nasty.

hmm, have I answered in this thread??
Busy... Fall design show, Fryeburg Fair, pop up weddings, Public Show.. finally maybe after this weekend (about the 8th in a row I've been busy) I'll be able to do some more laundry, possibly vacuum and wash my kitchen floor?

I read much ~ post often and not always "business". There is a life outside of "design, tech help, marketing, wire services" and lots of us enjoy hearing, reading, seeing what our friends (although many have never met) do outside their places of work.

Oh did I mention, working on the website, trying to learn to blog, keeping the books for MSFGA, keeping the grandchildren out of the new flowers and onto the "throw aways"...........

Live life people, you only go around once. If you don't like what's being said, ignore the thread??
