Wire services / To quit or not to quit?/ Something to think about this summer

I know a few flower shops that have had different wire services and have been in business for many years. Some of these shops will only take an incoming wire order if it's "over" a certain amount. If it's a wire order of $45 including delivery, they probably won't take the order.
Can't blame them, but it's their choice, their business.

Wire services (a business to make a profit) have been around for a long time. If one fails, another one will fill it's place.

I only belong to FSN, but I have tried teleflora and ftd. I send postcards every month to the customers that ordered that month the year before (birthdays, anniversaries, holidays)
It works for me and my past customers like the reminder.

My shop has been in FTD for over 30 years and in Teleflora for over 20 years (or so I was told). FTD makes me a bit of money, but the WS model is broken. The customer service at FTD.com is horrible on my end and the consumer's end. The CSRs lie to get a customer to place the order and they lie to get us to fill them. They over sell and under deliver every time. Clients who place orders online are promised rock bottom prices only to get hit with a ridiculous processing fee after investing 20 minutes or more navigating through the order process. This starts a customer off with a negative perception of our industry. When they recieve the $30.00+$9.99 delivery Precious Heart Bouquet that they paid almost $60 or more for who do they blame for it being so small?

I bought this shop 2 years ago not knowing that the old owner had been really screwing people over for the last 10 years. I have been actively turning around that reputation by giving great customer service, quality and value. Notice I said value, not low price. He had spent thousands of dollars on discount sale type banners; the first thing I did was throw them away. Wire orders are working against me because other than the designer's choice selection, odds are I am going to have to sub something from ANY of the 200+ arrangements available 24/7_365lastminuteholidaysandweekends. That is not good customer service.

I really don't understand why any shop gives a @@@@ if the wire services survives, or why they feel like they need to provide same day delivery to anywhere in the world. I will be providing out of town service for my corporate and church accounts, but I am phasing out "wire-out" orders because it is nothing but a scam. With search engines and credit cards there is simply no need for it. In my wife's little shop, we would happily google a list of phone numbers for florists in another town and give them to the customer free of charge. I don't think we lost a single customer by doing that. If they were paying in cash/check we would place the order for them for a $10.00 fee and explain fully that the control of quality was simply out of our hands even though we would do our best to find a good shop. People appreciate honesty in customer service.

My delivery area has enough potential customers for me to make a nice living. I am going to focus on turning them from potential to actual customers and keeping them that way.

Had a customer call after 5, wanting to send flowers to another town. She said she had already called 5 shops and was told by all that they didn't wire out. They didn't even offer to help her by giving her a number to a shop in that town. A little education and help goes a long way.

Those who care are the very ones who gather the orders. If the ws does not exist, those same gatherers have no commission, no rebate, and very little hope of getting a real florist to fill, even with a credit card. In essence, they would have little reason to be in the type of business they are in because the opportunity to screw the consumer would be limited.

Exactly~!~!~!

Hey Art,

I have a big question for you...How much of your business model depends on the wire out portion? How much of your current business do you stand to loose money from if you lose high rebates, and streamlined sending ability? How much do you depend on fillers to generate the revenue for your business?? Also, being the visionary you are, do you have a plan in place in case these wire services fail? What is that plan??

While we are all implementing our plan of solving the problem of too many filled orders not enough sent orders, and not having enough reach or money to effectively gather orders..you are sitting here indirectly brainwashing people into believing that they may be wrong for doing it..I struggled with my decision for one full year before implementing what I knew was killing my business....The more I grew the more TF took from me in terms of money, the more I gave the more they wanted and when I needed they were never there to return the favor...I bet they would be all ears if you spoke up, they need you and your orders, you need the small shops to fill because they think they need the orders...and when they go out, 3 more take their place, howeever with the power of the internet and the young kids knowing how to use computers, many are foregoing the ws model local florist and that must scare you....they are not jumping right in but taking a we will see if we need it approach and many will find that how they do things works and will never know the struggle that we old florists know because they have only seen how a healthy local wire service free business can run...no ws stress, no hundreds of dollars a month leaving you with questions of what exactly do I need to spend this money for feelings, no just flowers, weasley, america's florist or from you flowers shenanigans...this must be a very scary time for you, the early 90's was a world full of promise, here in 2011 your model is basically threatening to become very difficult and the empire could come crashing down if you don't do something...I understand that, that has been happening in the small florists world for years, difference is all we have to lose is a dream, no empire to ry to keep a float.and no worry of lots of employees to let go and property to sell or get rid of...I hope what ever your plans are they just don't take down lots of little florists with you pushing them to keep a part of their business that might be killing them...I do hope you are helping florists and not just being one of the many sucking the blood of desparate peole holding onto a dream and hoping to be a big florist like you and being lead to the desert for a good long drink only to find they are alone in a mirage with nothing but and empty bank account and not even a thank you of helping you along to the real oasis....you too have the ability to take two routes, just like the wires did, we all know what route they took in the name of saving the florists let us see what route you take...

Lori,

Points well made. I do, particularly like the one that, almost as a throw-away, says you pondered the matter for a year - not just a Summer. Some think that WS are ditched as a whim or fancy: a few may do that (just as they perhaps signed up on a fleeting moment of 'Why not?'); but most of us agonized other the matter when, in truth, the cold, financial figures are sitting there in front of us telling us 'Stop, now!'. Yes, I'll "brag" about giving the issue of remaining long, tumultuous, consideration and, you know what, reason and financials won out and I terminated because staying is nothing to "brag" about.

Me too I terminated because the numbers they promised to come in never did even when i was a "prefered florist" in the town in the first 3 months...

I don't miss the incoming orders and I have no problem sending out on our shop credit card. (or FSN for overseas and the states_)
