Over and over the studies show consumers think florist overpriced, but when I bring up an example (and I'll admit, perhaps this wasn't the best one), everyone plays "**** ** *****" (EDITED: poor choice of words) on my post. Fine..."business-as-usual"...maybe we can break that 10%-decline mark this year!!

you found a pizz poor example to gripe about, 's ok, it's all good, try again.

I suggest some of them nationwides that use all inclusive pricing, they're a good target. Add in the taxes and you do have people paying about 50% more than SRP I would guess.

Um....errr..... *sigh* Were it all so simple as to point to some designs we feel are over-priced and make the nexus that traditional florists are losing gifting market share because of those guys.

Questioning 'business as usual' and highlighting perceived weaknesses in our sector makes us all think. But - is it possible to have these discussions without picking on individual shops? Not the first time and I sure hope it's the last. :(

Price is a component of the decline, so is convenience (web-based ordering), so is channel shifting (studios for weddings, changes from large funerals to simple memorial services, importers shipping direct from Miami to consumers). It's all part of the mix and a lot more.

Your homework, should you choose to accept it, is to go out and find some cool arrangements at great values created by local flower shops. How about sharing examples of the kinds of original products florists are offering that keep consumers buying from our channel. :)

I think your post went a bit awry.

If your premise is that florists are pricing themselves out of the market due to behavioral conditioning from the wire services, I think you are correct.

For years, we would price our WS product below the WS's SRP, because we wanted to provide our customers with value. However, during the Bob Norton rein at FTD, he made it crystal clear that he was going to lop off florists' heads if they did not provide the customer with the exact floral bouquet shown in the selection guides or online. There was a year or two, where he would show florists' failing design and product tests. His mantra was "we don't want the most florists, we want the best florists" (that is a paraphrase). It caught my attention, so from then on, even if I could have filled the product with additional flowers, I didn't.

Well, two things happened. One this tactic made florists say if that is the way FTD wants to conduct themselves, then I, as a florist, will abide by FTD's pricing structure. (Remember, this is before this recent trend towards "value" pricing and before the higher membership fees as well as the ancillary fees) Two, FTD lost alot of members. (Norton thought FTD could survive with 8-9,000 FTD members).

Value, Quality-fresh flowers, and good design does work.

I'll tell you who told me...our customers. We grown from $80k to $135k to about $275k in three years...yes, and many of THEM have TOLD ME PERSONALLY that our value and designs are so heads and shoulders above the our competition that they gush and tell their friends and co-workers to check us out.

Those must have been the same people responsible for my growth rate, but I'm one of those "established guys" who you seem to think have lost 5-6% of the market, yet that's not what my books tell me.
